Background I have been working from home for more than a decade, so I am used to looking for comfortable headphones that have large ear cups, fit for a large head, and with Pads that won't make you sweat during a 60-minute call. The Deva is great, checking all the right boxes, and then looking great to boot. I like the sound it produces with a firm bass, better than what my HD 6xx or even my M1060C can do, and much better than my B&O H6 or Jabra Elite 65h. Amplification Amplification is very critical though, so might want to pair it with a nice Headphone Amp, or use the convenience of the BlueMini Balanced Amp that comes with the Kit on Amazon. Not sure I need to mention this, but because of the "low" impedance, it does not pair well the Darkvoice Tube Amp (for that one, I almost exclusively use the HD 6xx, a match made in Heaven). On the included BlueMini, it is quite a capable little Amp, and it can easily slam hard on the bass. I am not a "bass-head" for sure, but I did have a pair of Beats Studio 2 Wireless (when I didn't know better) and these do not lose on bass to those, while being much crisper and spatial than those. On other Bluetooth alternatives like the FiiO BTR5, without having a 2.5mm TRRS to 3.5mm TRRS cable at hand yet (will have to order one, probably by Hart Audio Cables), when trying it with the included 3.5mm non-balanced cable, it sounds thinner than the sound I get with the included BlueMini, even in High Gain at 55/60 volume. They sound great and powerful when connected to my SMSL M9 DAC/Amp, so I am sure they will sound even better on one of the THX AAA Amps for sure. Conclusions Pros - Absolutely enjoy it every day, for music, movies and video calls for work - They sound amazing and loud with the included Amp (after a week of running them hard), and are great for any kind of music, including but not limited to Classical, Opera, Jazz, Pop and World Music, and they sound very fresh and open. - The included flexibility of no wires helps a lot of other use cases, differently from my usual desk headphones. - The looks are gorgeous (for my taste) - The size is perfect even for my big head and big ears, making it the most comfortable headphone I have ever had - Will sound even better with a good Amp - Can connect the BlueMini as DAC to my Android Phone running 24bit / 192kHz out of Onkyo HF Player, and it's a great experience (using my own USB-C cable). - BlueMini also does LDAC Bluetooth connection to the phone, which is great and clean 16bit/48 kHz without wires Cons - The very long and good USB-C cable included for some reason is not connecting the BlueMini as DAC on my iMac (High Sierra), MacBook Pro (Catalina) or Android Phone (S9). It does charge it, but if I use my own USB-A to USB-C cable I can actually make it connect as a DAC, which should be much better than using the SBC Bluetooth quality that Mac provides (I do have a good collection of High-Res FLAC and DSD music). Again, minor inconvenience rather than a big problem, but it should have worked. - I did have to leave them open and "breathing" in an open area right after they arrived for some 5 days. The plastic smell was overwhelming, and as much as I wanted to use them right away, it was just too much. Not too bad that I would take even half a star, but something to be aware. - They could have included a balanced cable (instead of the long USB one), or at least sell one as an option, and not make us try to find such a specialty cable by ourselves - Very loud sound leak, so maybe it's obvious for an open-back, but this is even louder than my HD 6xx. ... show more

For reference, I own Massdrop HD 6XX's, Audeze LCD-XC's, Shure SE535 & SE846's, Cupid hybrids by obravo and Ausounds Flex-ANC hybrid, Massdrop CTH & SDAC (computer sourced amp/dac), FiiO BTR5 (portable bluetooth dac/amp) and Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt (Usb C amp/dac). I like music... I didn't have super high expectations for these at this price, but the feature set made me very interested (and I've followed Hifiman for awhile now)! I love the idea of not being tied to a desktop amp/dac (hence my love for the FiiO BTR5) and possibly no cables... I ran them non-stop on my tube desktop set up for ~40 hrs before listening, here's what I found with each connection type: -Wired -3.5mm SE cable from Massdrop CTH&SDAC to Deva: The sound is warm and engaging with lots of bass and detail, not overly emphasized but fun, just about right from low bass to mids, treble is not as extended as I'd like but not really lacking either. Probably about half as good as the uber expensive Audeze LCD-XC's. Pretty darn good for $300... -Bluemini - wireless bluetooth amp/dac module: I only listen to bluetooth with the LDAC codec, I find this to be the best sound I can get wireless (I also have a FiiO mmcx bluetooth wireless neck band with LDAC, which I use with my Shure IEM's). I was shocked! Still very engaging and fun! You might lose a very small bit of resolution, but not much if any. Very good bass and mids, treble again is decent. I'm quite impressed, they get a little compressed when pushed hard to higher sound limits, but at decent volumes is very good and plenty loud. My only gripe with this method is you must adjust the sound from your source (no adjustment on the Bluemini module, only pause/call answer/etc). Not really a problem from my phone or ipad, but in windows you have to open the volume adjustment, etc... Not a deal breaker, but inconvenient. Thus my 4 stars on volume control. -Wired - USB A to USB C, Bluemini as dac/amp: Again, I was shocked! I really like this combo and feature. The Bluemini clearly has a decent dac inside! As an amp, it's ok. I would've liked a little more power, but it worked fine. This might have been the best set up for overall sound (as they come from Hifiman), great clarity and resolution, speed and dynamics were great too. Again, fun to listen to. Not fatiguing ever. They run fine off of my phone too, but I prefer a better sound and volume from an amp/DAC. So really no need to buy a DAC or Amp! -Wired - 3.5mm SE cable to Audioquest Dragonfly Cobalt: I had to try this out to compare and wow! Again the little Dragonfly doesn't disappoint! I think this brought the Deva's even more to life with better separation of instruments and spacing. Very open and spacious sounding with great bass. Maybe not the cleanest bass (like HD6xx's or Audeze LCD-XC's), but not too overly enhanced or bloated either, mids are very clear as is treble (which kinda feels like their lacking, but their not). Again I'd call then Fun! :-) My HD 6xx's are more detailed and open sounding, but I find them often lacking in bass (sub bass?), and so are more analytical than "fun" although amazing nonetheless.. The Audeze LCD-XC's are simply in another world, or league to both of these lesser priced cans, but if you want a similar sound to those >$1,000 headphones for a fraction of the price, get these! They are light and comfortable enough to wear for long sessions, and they sound great! I love all the options for using them, each with a slightly different sound signature, fun to play with and utilize differently as needed. I'm hoping Hifiman utilize this connection type for more models moving forward. Very feature rich! At $300 these are a steal! So to sum up: You get a great sounding planar magnetic headphone... A great wireless bluetooth option... A great dac/amp combo unit... And all the cables you'll need for each. I don't know how they did it but bravo Hifiman! ... show more
