  • Good studio speakers
Very good speakers

  • Just… Good
They’re good for prepping for a DJ set. I get some weird static when connected to my pc and controller. It’s drowned out once I fire up the music. Overall good for the price.

  • Perfect for a home dj setup
Not the loudest monitors but they have great sound. Have them hooked to a numark platinum fx. Good for home use.

  • Surprisingly good value, if your expectations are reasonable
My office studio contains professional monitors, but my home setup has seen stuck with a pair of generic "computer speakers" for much too long. So I was eager to give this pair of modestly-sized and -priced monitors a try. I was surpised when I took them out of the box. They're larger and heftier than the photos in the product page makes them look ... and also more attractive. The front panels are plastic -- mostly matte black, with shiny black around the drivers -- but the enclosures appear to be made of real wood, painted flat black. Don't look cheap at all. The right speaker contains all of the active electronics, including the AC power supply. No annoying wall wart, just a simple AC power cable. Yay! Audio inputs are a pair of RCA "phono" jacks; a cable is provided that lets you connect the system directly to a standard 1/8" stereo headphone jack, which is probably what most users will want. The left speaker is connected to the right with push-in speaker terminals on the back. The included six-foot cable, clearly color-coded (with thoughtfully pre-stripped/tinned ends), makes this connection simple and foolproof. An AC power switch is located on the back of the right speaker. Power status is indicated by a blue LED on the front, beside the volume control. I'm glad they didn't integrate the power switch into the volume control -- you can set the level once and forget it -- but it would be nice not to have to fumble around the back to power down. Speaker positioning is important for serious monitoring, and this little system is no exception. As the manual clearly illustrates, you want to create an equilateral triangle, with the speakers aimed directly at your ears. Ideally they should be raised to ear level, or at least angled upward. Placing the speakers on vibration-absorbing supports (not included, but available separately) will help prevent unwanted resonances. Properly positioned, these little monitors are a BIG step up from my old "computer speakers." I auditioned them with a variety of pop and classical recordings, mostly 24-bit 96kHz sources, driven by a Focusrite Scarlet 6i6 Gen2 DAC. Stereo balance and imaging are solid; center-panned instruments and vocals are clearly locked up front. The mid-to-upper midrange and highs are pleasantly balanced, with no harshness or glare. There's a gentle but obvious boost in the lower midrange, probably intended to give the impression of extended bass response. This can sound like "warmth" in some tracks, but can result in muddiness or conjestion in others. No signficant bass output below 100Hz. This is hardly surprising in a system with 3" woofers costing less than $100. If you want serious "thump," or need to assess the low-frequency content of a recording, expect to spend more. The 15-watt amplifiers are potent enough to drive these monitors to earsplitting levels. Sitting three feet away, 33% of maximum volume is more than I would ever need. Distortion becomes apparent at settings above 50%. With no music playing, a very faint hiss is audible if you put your ear right up to one of the tweeters, regardless of volume setting. This is typical of most powered monitors under $500/pair, and is not an issue under normal listening conditions. Bottom line: This system is not suitable (or intended) for critical listening applications. But if you're looking for a pair of super-affordable powered monitors for an entry-level home studio, or for "mid-fi" auditioning in a professional setup, this Hercules system is a respectable choice. ... show more
