Description

Hennessy Hammock Expedition Series The Expedition is the hammock that started the hammock camping revolution and is still the favourite all-purpose Hennessy Hammock—great for backpacking, family camping, expeditions, kayaking, motorcycling, and any other purposes which require comfort and durability. The Classic model has an ingenious entrance through the bottom that snaps closed automatically under the weight of your body and seals with velcro. Mosquitos can’t figure out how you disappeared standing outside your hammock and magically re-appeared lying comfortably inside. The Zip model has a side entrance with a full length heavy duty YKK zipper and two double sliders. The mesh can be held open with an elastic so you can watch the stars on clear, bug free nights. The Jungle Expedition Zip has a double layer bottom with 40d nylon for 100% mosquito protection and to hold the Heat- Reflecting DoubleBubble Pad between the layers and on the correct diagonal. One of the nicest things about the Jungle models is climbing into your hammock with your sleeping bag and not having to think about keeping an insulation pad from moving around under you during the night. The double bottom jungle models are designed for temperatures down to 40F / 4C. when used with the accessory Heat-Reflecting DoubleBubble Pad. A Complete Shelter System The Hennessy Hammock is a legendary piece of camping and survival equipment and has been the choice of epic expeditions exploring the full length of the Nile, Amazon and Congo Rivers, up to the Arctic, down into the deepest caves on Earth, and other extreme environments around the world. Every Hennessy is a complete, engineered shelter system. Built tough for years of service, every hammock is uncompromising in materials and workmanship. All Hennessys include webbing straps, tightly woven fabrics and high quality support ropes, a matching detachable rainfly, a "no see um" mosquito mesh, a gear loft on the ridge line and a stuff sack with set up instructions on the back. Built tough for years of service, all of our support ropes and webbing straps are six times stronger than the weight rating of the hammock. We believe it is essential to include complementary webbing straps with each hammock to prevent damage to the tender bark of small trees. The Hennessy Hammock has almost zero impact and is an excellent example of a “Leave No Trace” shelter. Asymmetrical Design Experience a level of comfort on the trail almost as good as your bed at home and maybe even better. The patented asymmetrically shaped hammock supports your back and knees like a quality contoured mattress off the ground. Amazingly Comfortable Tall or large campers and campers with injuries, sore joints, bone spurs or back pain tell us about finding their first night of comfortable camping in many years with the larger Explorer Deluxe or Safari Deluxe models. You will wake up in the morning feeling great. Some owners of Hennessy Hammocks claim that they come home from their adventure feeling better than when they left. Some report that they tossed out their beds when they got home from a hike and set up their hammock in the house. It's a shelter that takes the pain out of the outdoors and protects the environment. Extend your seasonal use by adding accessory insulation systems. Countless tiny improvements over 40 years of effort and design. Read more Unique Bottom Entry Patented entrance on the bottom automatically snaps closed under the weight of your body and seals with velcro. The "Classic" bottom entry works great when you are being followed by a cloud of mosquitoes. When you duck your head down to open the bottom entrance, the mosquitoes don't know what you're doing, so they get out of the way for a few seconds. Before they know what's happened, the door has snapped shut and you are on the inside and they are on the outside. Side Zipper Entry Zips closed with a full length, heavy duty 10 YKK zipper on one side between the mesh and the bottom fabric. One advantage of the zip model is that it's a little easier to set up your bedding but the mosquitoes also find it easier follow you in and join you for a snack later, so double check for intruders before you zip up for the night. Evolved Hammocks Hennessy Hammock is a small family run company whose only mission is to continually improve the evolution of hammock design. The inventor, Tom Hennessy, has been sleeping in hammocks for over 60 years and experimenting with designs for over 40 years. He made over 50 prototypes and beta-tested his designs for six years before getting patents and going into production. (EU pat.1463426-16, US patents US20090165205A1, US6865757B2) Thoughtful Details Triangular Mesh Gear Pocket, Glove Hooks, Carabiner Loops, and included Webbing Straps. A nifty gear pocket slides on the ridgeline and stores out of sight behind your head. Two glove hooks are also threaded on the ridgeline and can be used for attaching LED lights and even attaching a drink can by the hole in the pull tab. All hammocks ridge lines are installed with a loop on each inside hammock end to which a small carabiner can be hooked to hold daypacks, water bottles, and other small items which are too heavy to hang over the ridge line. • By far the best hammock on the market
Style: Expedition Zip
I don't even know where to begin, I have so many positive things to say about this hammock, it is in my opinion the absolute best Hammock on the market. Ive used this hammock about a dozen times since February (after trying countless others) and I can't get over how comfortable it is, how stable it is, and how easy it is to set up. I'm 6' 230lbs and the Expedition Asym doesn't sag me down to the ground like "parachute" style hammocks do. Hennessys incorporation of the Ridgeline directly in to the design makes getting in and out of this hammock a breeze where others cause you to play a balancing act. The first time I used this Hammock was on a single bag kayak adventure down the Peace River in Southwest Florida, the weather was already starting to warm up and we hit highs in upper 80s and lows in the lower 60s. I was amazed at how well the hammock kept me cool when relaxing in the hot afternoons, the breeze under your bottom side definitely has a cooling effect. Depending on your climate I may recommend using an under quilt in conjunction with a sleeping bag to keep your hind end from freezing. In Florida's tropical climate that was not an issue, my cheap sleeping bag sufficed during the cool nights. My most recent trip was another solo bag trip to an island off of beautiful Boca Grande Florida. This time the Temps reached 95* for a high and didn't get below 80 for a low. I was amazed once again at how well the rain fly would help keep the sun off of me during my afternoon breaks and how cool it kept me at night. Here in Florida we are no stranger to a plethora of insects, from mosquitoes to biting horse flies to the absolute worst "noseeums" they are microscopic biting midges roughly the size of a flea. Most bug nets are no match for them, but this one prevailed where many others have failed. I found trees roughly 14' apart work work best, but I have hung this hammock with hammock straps to distances surpassing 20' but I have also hung it on trees as close to 10' apart. Adding a sleep pad helps promote a flatter lay and adds another layer of warmth and protection from bugs. If I had a few recommendations to give this is what they would be. For anyone over 6'2 look in to getting the Hennessy Hammock Explorer as it is better suited for taller users. If you live in a tropical climate like I do you may want to get the "jungle" version as it adds a second layer of protection on your bottom half from pesky mosquitoes, it also nests an optional pad for warmth and comfort. You can also add a set of Repell Rings to make setup easier and faster although it is not recommended by Hennessy as it puts some "wear" on the lines that support your weight. I personally have not seen any wear. I also recommend getting a slightly larger rainfly (hex asym) if you plan on using this in a wet climate, the standard asym rainfly will keep you dry in some rainfall but just barely, it is more suited for slight drizzles and the morning dew. If you want to stay dry in any type of rain you must stake it down close making it a little muggy when inside and leaving minimal room to get in and out of the hammock. The Hex asym rainfly on the other hand adds the much needed coverage to stay comfortably dry while allowing airflow and ease of access. The three must haves items you should add to your cart before checkout are 1) hammock straps (I prefer Bear Butt straps as they are affordable, durable, stand behind their products and are of high quality. They also come with bonus steel caribeaners) 2) Aluminum Caribeaners (Again I prefer Bear Butt caribeaners as stated for the same reasons I chose Bear Butt straps. The aluminum caribeaners are larger making setup easier and also a third of the weight of the ones that come with the Bear Butt straps) And finally 3) Hennessy Hammock Snake Skins! It is absolutely amazing at how fast setup and takedown is with such a simple yet effective product. My hammock doesn't even touch the ground when I go out camping! These are an absolute must have no questions asked item. ... show more

  • Excellent product with a few minor issues
Overall, an excellent product. Used it for many weekend hikes, and besides a few issues (both product and user) I would highly recommend this product. Pros: Light weight, versatile, good on the back Cons: Definite learning curve to setting up and taking down effectively, bug net can not be removed, no stakes Bought this hammock 4 years ago right before a hike to Black Forest Trail in the hope that I could save space and weight. And this hammock did both quite well and much more! Did quite a bit of reading online and watched a few videos about setting the hammock up since this my first camping hammock. The price was off putting at first and I eventually just decided to go for it! So while the below wall of text may seem contradictory to the rating I gave it, it's more of just sharing my experiences with this hammock so that maybe people who buy it will be aware and prepared for when they take it out. This thing is nice and light weight and since it has no true "hard" pieces I could throw it in a compression sack if I want. Usually I just keep it in its stuff sack close to the top of my pack. Now while this maybe strictly due to operator error, but setup is definitely a learning process. I've had trees too close together and too far apart. The only usable trees covered in poison ivy or get to a pre planned site to find out there are no trees to support me. The first few times I set it up, there was considerable sag in my hammock because I didn't quite get the bite on the knots correct. That along with a rainstorm caused a soggy sleeping bag. I've tried bringing it on a winter hike and had the temperature drop out and been shivering all night long even in a 0 degree bag. Ok, so most of this is just my fault and sounds like a lot of room for error but I think it's quite minor. Once you sleep in it for a night, it will be hard to go back to a tent ever again (which is why I tried to take it winter hiking hahaha). It takes some getting used to sleeping over the entrance on the bottom and it can feel a bit claustrophobic inside when it is dark and you got a bunch of nonsense hanging from the main line. But all those nasty hard spots that your underwhelming pad can't fix or that root or rock you notice in the middle of the night, those nights are gone! I have for the most part awoken quite refreshed! I have gotten fairly efficient setting it up before my hiking buddy finishes his tent or his hammock. The bug net is worth it for the piece of mind of keeping creepy crawly's off and not being eaten alive by mosquitoes. Now while I have been jealous of my buddy on nights where he doesn't use his bug net or just climbs in over the side for his hammock, I think the integrated netting lends to a speedy and easy setup and clean up. The rainfly may seem a bit minimal but for the most part does the job. Unless you have too much sag or the rain is sideways, I've stayed dry in rain and have started to use a small tarp to add rain protection if I'm expecting serious weather. No stakes came with it but I generally just tie off to nearby foliage or pick up some sticks to stake into the ground (now I just bring my tent stakes). Would be nice to have included them but not a deal breaker in my opinion. As far as overall durability and how sturdy it is, I would say that I was underwhelmed when I first got it. I thought it looked flimsy, and being 230lbs, slightly concerned. But I can safely say that this hammock is well made and I've had no problems with rips, tears, or weight tolerance. The first few times you crawl in can be a bit nerve wracking as you finally put your full weight in it. Finally, this hammock system will take some getting used to if you're used to the tent life (I grew up camping out in a coleman tent and then a eureka). Suddenly those vestibules you had to store your boots and messy gear is gone. Want to hide out with your hiking partner in the tent during a rain storm to play some cards? Getting in and out of the hammock can be a bit awkward in the middle of the night to relieve yourself and if it is going to rain, better make sure you have a bag to keep your gear in. And make sure you put everything in the hammock before you get in or you will have to get back out and rummage through your pack etc. These are most of the lessons I've learned with this hammock. Overall I love it and really think it's worth considering when looking at getting a hammock for hiking or just an excellent compliment to your tent. ... show more
