You might call me a weekend fisherman—I often fished in my teens, but it was not until one weekend a few years ago that I once again tested the waters. Back then, I used a spin casting reel. The difference between that reel and this spinning reel by HAUT TON is considerable. In the wrong hands, both are subject to line twisting and tangling, probably less so with the spinning reels in terms of severity. Tangling issues with spin casting reels can be more disruptive since the line is enclosed. My first attempt at spooling this spinning reel was a challenge, and although there are many online tutorials about spooling a spinning reel, that’s just more conflicting information to sort through. The HAUT TON is a model 2000 reel, putting it on the smaller end of the reel size range. It will hold 197 yards of 14-pound line, 175 yards of 20-pound line, or 110 yards of 30 pound line. My brother-in-law, an accomplished weekender, scoffed at the idea of me ever getting so much as a whiff of a 20-lb. bass, so I opted for 10-pound test which is still probably stronger than I’ll ever need. The 2000 size reel is comparatively lightweight. I’ll take the more comfortable balance of a lighter rod, and on this one the comfort of a non-metallic handle knob. Spinning reel casting accuracy is not the highest. But accuracy is more of a factor with experienced fishermen who know what they are looking for and where to find it. As someone who usually fishes from the shore or a dock, rarely from a boat, accuracy is an afterthought. The reel’s 5.2:1 gear ratio is generally better suited for larger fish; I’ll worry about that if I ever snag one. The 3.1 stainless steel bearing design should be fine for freshwater fishing and light saltwater use—which does not include test casts from my patio where I had spread rock salt following the recent 8-inch snowfall. The first casts were eye openers. There were some line twisting problems and other issues that I slowly tidied up. That’s good news, but the better news is that I'm realizing the cause of the problems is me, not the reel which performs beautifully whenever I allow it to. There is still much to learn, but I’m geeked. This reel has the features and build quality to please more experienced anglers while providing room to grow for career novices such as myself.

I needed to wait after I got this for the weather to break. After having some time to use those real a think it is a solid value for the money. If you are looking for a smooth reel for crappie or trout I would give one a shot.

I have to say I’m blown away with this real and it’s billed quality. I love the thicker bail wire and the rubberized ring inside the spool to make your Adhere easily, including braid whenever you’re fooling it up. Size 2000 is good for inshore saltwater or freshwater fishing and as I’ve lightly discovered a small reel does not necessarily mean a small fish, you can handle it right and you have the drag set correctly. Speaking of the drag seems nice and stout, but what I especially like is the clicker is very loud so that if you release the drag and have it sitting, and then it starts fooling out, the clicker is loud enough that you won’t have any doubt that a fish is pulling it in and then you tighten the drag and get down to business. It’s either right or left-handed, easily switchable and real smoothly and it’s gonna be a pleasure to use on top of it just looking really cool with the spool punch outs given a cool modern machine feel and even the bulb handle is kind of cool. If there was anyone downside to it, it might actually be that large bulb handle instead of being flattened. It’s more like a large grape. So while it’s large and easy to grab, it’s almost so large that it could’ve been a little bit smaller, perhaps or even flattened on two sides so that your finger would have somewhere to really easily press into. But it won’t really hamper the use. It’s just like grabbing a medium sized cork and having that on the end of the handle. Very well made very nice metallicized Green finish 3+1 bar bearings and as you’ve seen a Geer ratio of 5.2 to 1 and a 2000 size reel the capacity of 197 yards for 14 pound 175 yards for 20 pound and 110 yards of 30 pound and I assume that’s mono but with braided as you know you would get certainly more than that. very nice. Looking forward to using it. Also has auto reverse switch on the bottom as you see in the pictures like mini reels have Love it. lets go fishing! p. s. I forgot to mention too that it does have a stainless steel bearings and carbon fiber brake pads, which will help with longevity.

I had mixed impressions with this spinning reel. Out of the box, the reel action felt smooth, and the retrieve was consistent during initial use. There was no noticeable backward play when stopping the crank, which can be reassuring for newer or casual anglers. The finish and skeletal styling on the spool are visually interesting and give it a distinctive look. That said, some of the machined edges on the spool felt sharper and less refined than expected, which stood out compared to more polished reels. In use, the anti-reverse behavior was firm, and reversing the spool required changing settings rather than occurring freely. Line capacity on the size I tested appeared more limited in practice than the higher capacity markings on the spool might suggest, depending on line type and diameter. Overall, the reel has some positive traits in smoothness and appearance, but there are also areas where refinement could be improved. For me, it works better as a secondary or backup reel rather than a primary, everyday option. Given the competition in this category, this reel didn’t fully meet what I’d expect for regular use.
