Description

Long esteemed as counterpoint's greatest master, Johann Sebastian Bach created harmonizations of chorales that have served as voice-leading models for generations. This affordable volume features 371 of the composer's harmonized chorales, presented in closed score for easy study as well as play. These traditional liturgical melodies in four-voice arrangements comprise Gregorian chant melodies that survived the Reformation to form part of Protestant worship as well as traditional German melodies that found their way into services. A staple of every music program, Bach’s chorales spell out the rules of music theory that remain the cornerstones of modern composition. These closed score arrangements, ideal for playing at the piano, offer keyboardists an opportunity to practice their sight-reading skills. Students of counterpoint and harmony will find this collection of enormous theoretical importance, and all will appreciate the practical value of its modest price. Read more

  • Beautiful music; mediocre book
Format: Paperback
I appreciate that there are nearly 400 chorales in this volume. The music itself is gorgeous (as one would expect from JSB). However, as another reviewer wrote, the spacing is very cramped...both within the individual pieces, and in trying to fit so many compositions on one page. The binding is terrible. I was only able to make it lay flat after literally stepping on it while open to the piece I was trying to play, face-down on the carpet. I have to do that again with other pieces on other pages. Obviously, this is going to make the book's life much shorter. I may actually take it to the local copier to cut the binding and rebind it with spiral or comb. The back cover says that the closed score arrangements are "ideal for playing at the piano," but I found many sections to be nearly impossible to play, at least with all 4 voices at once. Now, I am not a virtuoso keyboardist by any means - so perhaps my chops are not 'up to snuff' - but my hands are large, yet I find contrary motion in two voices leading from 6ths to a spread of a 12th in the right hand to be hard to pull off. This means the performer is going to have to make practical decisions about which voices to play and which to omit - which may not be a bad thing (that's real life), but it isn't what I expected from the description. Yes, I realise that this is the way Bach wrote them. Overall the music gets 5 stars. The book itself gets 2. I'm half tempted to lay the chorales out myself, either by hand or in Sibelius. :-) ... show more

Format: Paperback
This is one of mankind's greatest treasures. Suitable for learning keyboard, or sight singing, or just wondering at the endless insight that Bach provides. A must for any musical library.

  • Complete Collection
Format: Paperback
A good edition as it is complete. The only quibble I have is the spacing. It would be nice to see an edition with a bit more room between each chorale and some more space on the grand staff. I have used this for analysis with students and it would be better suited for that purpose with more space.
