Description

Composed for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, The Rite of Spring premiered in 1913 at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris. Igor Stravinsky's harmonically adventurous score--along with a scenario of pagan sacrifice and Vaslav Nijinsky's unconventional choreography--excited both opposition and support, and the event’s climax in a near-riot remains among the most notorious premieres in music history. Stravinsky created a version of the orchestral score for piano four hands, and it was in this form that the piece was first published in 1913; the full score was unavailable in print until 1921. World War I's disastrous effects permeated every aspect of European life, and there were few performances of the work in the years following its composition--which made this arrangement the primary introduction to the work. Scaled down for rehearsal purposes, this reduction provides a practical opportunity for two pianists to perform the complete work, or for listeners to delve inside the structure behind Stravinsky's landmark opus. • Great resource, with some curious quirks
Format: Paperback
Studying the full orchestral score is a struggle as one needs to adjust for so many transpositions. By comparison, studying this four-hand piano score is a snap -- finally I'm able to delve more easily into Stravinsky's many secrets. Fascinating and very rewarding. I wonder, though, whether Stravinsky is actually the one who produced this, because many of the spellings are really odd. For example, we often find what amounts to a C major chord spelled for no good reason with an F flat rather than an E. In other cases I've found double flats and double sharps used arbitrarily, with no good reason for not spelling the notes in the usual way. An inexperienced copyist might have come up with such spellings when transposing from the orchestral score, but it's hard to imagine why Stravinsky would have used such odd, counter-intuitive spellings. ... show more

  • It takes 2 to tango.
Format: Paperback
I got this book so that my girlfriend and I could pound on some Stravinsky together and piss off my neighbor. Too bad, every girl I've dated since I've bought this only listens to DJs, so I've had to piss off my neighbor in other ways with them.

  • The Right Rite
Format: Paperback
Perfect for quick chord, rhythm, and structure analysis . Complete enough top to bottom to see what is going on without the complexity and transposition demands of a full score. Amazingly clearly printed on good quality paper and bound securely. The only thing missing is English titles for those of us who don't read Russian or French. ... show more

Usual Dover quality. Comparing Stravinsky's own four-hand reduction to the orchestra score is fascinating!

Format: Paperback
This is the same layout and print as in the IMSLP file. I was hoping for the usual layout of piano four hands publications (Primo on right Secundo on left).
