  • The Sound.. Is defying for the size of these bad boys :) Onyx Studio 5
Color: Blue Style: Earplug
These things have managed to blow me away. I know its not the best speaker out there, but for all the research i have done, these are still the best bang for buck, literally and figuratively. The bass these produce is quite staggering for the size, and with my apartment and the walls the sound resonates and creates a good vibration in the room, like its an actual sub. I have the Sony XB-31, and the XB-41, both with the lights, and i have been overall satisfied for a while with those. Sound great, but with these i have come to the realization that with the Sony, you are paying more for the all around experience of the speaker, and not just the sound quality. This I got on sale for 109, and the other one I ordered because I wanted the blue one. And as soon as I got the first one, it was almost a no brain decision to get another one for travels, and the pairing together to make that "stereo" sound. (Onyx Studio 4-2 tweeters, and 2 "subs") Onyx 5-1 bigger sub, and a single tweeter. None the less still amazing. I have not owned the 4, but videos on you tube should suffice to explain the difference in detail. There are some minor setbacks, but mostly nit picky things such as, no accurate indication for battery level, battery life (Spoiled by the XB-41 amazing battery life in my experience, 7 months) and the slight reduction on power output when not plugged into the wall (Understandable from an engineering, and design standpoint though). But overall, super premium feel, no cop out on materials, and the handle design has grown on me. The Studio 6 is out now, with an IPX certification, not much content out yet, but from what I see, not much different, and sound is not as great. Strictly comparison speaking, because no matter what they still sound amazing, just doing in depth homework. I don't plan to use these as the throw everywhere, water, mountain adventure speakers, so the IPX, you should be fine without. These are worth the price. Heck I would say.., there worth 200 if not more, most speakers in the class were looking at at those price points barely stack up. Still good, but just suited to different listeners/environments. Overall amazing, and I think unless your super picky about it, or over audiophile about everything and expect these to match home theater, and crazy headphone setups you will thoroughly enjoy them. I myself am not a scientist about it, but to average; a very picky chooser on sound quality. These satisfy with ease with little drawback. Not worth enough to mention though because nothing is perfect, and for what you get... Man, just try it yourself. ... show more

  • Great bang for your bucks
Color: Blue Style: Earplug
I have to say the material used for this speaker look and feel amazing, build quality is top notch. I would say it’s because their initial price on Harman Kardon website is $450 so they have to try their best to justify the price. Even at $300 these would still worth it let alone $180. Now to the sound quality, I would say that it’s great for the price, maybe not up to higher fidelity standard but for the average consumer, these would be more pleasing to their ears. The lower frequencies are more pronounced, bass are strong and boomy, it’s almost leaking to the vocals but only hanging by a hair, highs are not the strongest so it won’t satisfy your rock, classical musics but anything would be great. Now what you could do is to change the EQ on your music source to make sure your music is more enjoyable. I find these speaker too bass-heavy out of the box and still trying to play with EQ for each listening session. Battery life is NOT Great, definitely not 8 hours but more like 4.5 to almost 5. I got some trouble with connecting it to my MacBook Pro 2017 but the 11 inch iPad and the iPhone work great and seamlessly. The box also come with 3 different power cords for traveling which is a great deal for my future travel to Asia. Overally I would rank the Onyx Studio 5 over the JBL Charge, UE portable speakers and Bose Revolve Plus. The power of the sound is just better in the class and also much cheaper than the Bose, which look like a toy that cost $300 and sound weak if you’re playing anything with bass ... show more

  • Absolute Class
Color: Gray Style: Earplug
I’ve owned the Studio 2 and I will say there are differences between the products. The Studio 2 had more bass but on the flip side, was harder to transport and when the legs broke off it was an absolute hassle. With the 5 you have less bass (roughly 20% less), however, the sound quality is absolutely superb for its price. At $130 dollars, very few speakers will deliver the crisp tone that this speaker provides. It can easily fill a medium sized room at 75% volume and is ideal for cooking, cleaning, working out, or just music for get together a with friends and family. I’m strongly considering buying a second as they have a joint pairing capability and could EASILY rupture your eardrums if you’re into that kinda thing. I’m extremely happy with my purchase and will say I will always come back to the brand as they’ve focused on the quality of sound, it’s portability, and have kept up with the modern design and color tones. Plus it’s amazon, you can have it returned at the snap of a finger if you’re not as happy as I am. Amazing. ... show more

  • Sound Quality
Color: Blue Style: Earplug
It's amazing that from reading some of the other comments posted on hear that some people are expecting this to be a speaker that is just as loud as a 5.1 or 7.2 home speaker system or a set of high end speakers for your computer. It's portable people. Use the onyx studio 5 speaker in a office setting such as I do and you will be amazed at what comes out of that round oval sphere, but you should be amazed at home as well. Those of you who say there is too much bass, go to your sound adjustments on your device and tone down the bass, increase the treble to your liking. Its that simple. I bought the Onyx Studio 5 speaker to use at home and at the office. Co-workers 4 offices down and some surrounding offices, stop by and ask me what kind of system do you have in here? When I point to the corner of my desk, their jaws drop because they can believe the clarity and deep bass sound coming from the Onyx 5 speaker and it not even turned up to the half way point. Fridays is always a party!!!! I was originally going to get this Onyx 5 speaker from sprint for $199 (regularly $497) which they have had at that price since black Friday of 2018. Trust me, you can find it cheaper here which I did. Sprint told me there were no more blue ones available, anywhere. I had to prove my point to them and they were not happy about it because I didn't by from them. I knew Amazon wouldn't let me down and they didn't. Over all the sound is superb to my liking due to adjustments on my phone. ... show more

  • BEST Bluetooth speaker PERIOD!!!!
Color: Blue Style: Earplug
Best Bluetooth speaker PERIOD!! Sound quality is impeccable, whether it’s on the lowest volume (idk why anyone would ever keep the volume low....) Even at its loudest, there is no distortion at all. It perfectly fills any room you have it in, yet, the music, at loud volumes seems to stay contained to the room it’s in. Best Christmas present I’ve ever bought myself. My poor TVs, neither of them have even been turned on since this bad boy arrived.... Everyone asks me about it!! The new design is not only very sleek and attractive, it makes it easy to move from room to room. Bass is booming but, not totally overpowering!! Warning: you might find yourself liking some lame music because everything sounds soooo good. Also, two devices can connect at the same time. If you have any obnoxious freinds, I’d suggest not mentioning that, or hooking up another device to block them from connecting. Amazing purchase, wish I’d gotten it a long time ago. I could not be more in love with this speaker. I’d probably marry it, if marriage to inatamate objects was legal, or socially acceptable. Lol Incredible speaker!!!! ... show more

  • for the price, you would struggle to find better sound over bluetooth
Color: Blue Style: Earplug
I have had the Onyx 4 for about a year now, and with the massive price dropping on the Onyx 5, I thought I would give it a shot... long story short, I definitely like it and I definitely think there will be some that prefer the Onyx 4. im an audio first kind of guy when it comes to any speaker or headphone, so this review will be entirely based on the sound and the differences between the 4 and 5 to my ears. in the bass department, the 5 clearly has more bass quantity. it slams very very har and in no way is this a neutral speaker... I have heard muddy bass before and I can confirm that there is a very slight bit of bleeding muddiness to the 5. its not enough to ruin the midrange by any means, but I can hear a little bit of interference from the insane amounts of slam. the 4 has a much more even bass performance. it has plenty of slam which is expected from those passive radiators, and it stays nice and controlled... the midrange is a tough one because I think they are both nice. the 5 is the thicker sounding speaker overall, but the 4 is sweet and even on a consistent basis. neither is better than the other so that would be down to preference. Harman Kardon seems to do well in midranges with every product I have heard from them. treble is actually where I hear the biggest difference in class. I haven't seen anyone mention this strangely enough, but I enjoy the treble performance on the 5 much more. it has quite a bit more finesse than the 4. hi-hats, bells etc. hang in the air for much longer than they do on the 4. it is clear that the 5's tweeter has more control than the two tweeters in the 4. there is a warmth in the treble on the 5 that is just so so sweet. switching back and forth between both speakers really exposed the 4 in the treble. to put it simply. the 5 is V shaped for sure and it has a lot of meat on its bones. I wouldn't be surprised if some find the bass annoyingly powerful though but I guess I like ludicrous amounts of slam. the 4 is easy to listen to and much more neutral. its also never too bright and its just an enjoyable listen. however for me, after hearing the 5, the 4 sounds a little thin in comparison and I guess I prefer dat thiccness ... show more

  • FINALLY FOUND WHAT I NEED.
Color: Blue Style: Earplug
Finally I was able to decide which bluetooth speakers to stick with. I had purchased denon250bt after doing long searching and reviewing videos but sound was not worth $200 so I returned it. There was no wow factor. However, when I tried onyx studio 5 there was definitely wow factor for both design and sound. This bluetooth shines when you turn the volume above half mark. The bass and the fullness of sound just dominates the space. I would prefer stereo and little more brightness however for this price you can't get any better. On HK site its listed as $400 bucks.... but on Amazon it's around $150. At first I wanted all in one bluetooth speaker. Waterproof, long lasting battery and big sound. But I could not find that has all three. So i bought Tribit xboom bluetooth speaker to cover waterproof and long battery life only $60 bucks and the sound and battery life is amazing. I am very satisfied with my decision. Big sound onyx 5 at home and back yard. For trips and hiking Xboom. Perfect combo!! and similar price as Denon 250bt after puchasing both speakers. ... show more

  • Best Sounding Bluetooth Speaker for the Money
Color: Gray Style: Earplug
Still breaking in the speaker at the time of this review, but the speaker so far is much better than the onyx 3 it’s replacing. The bass is way fuller and more than adequate for a small-midsize houseparty/kick-back. Due to the design of the woofer, the speaker can also hit impressively low frequencies, especially when compared to other bluetooth speakers. I don’t really care about trebles and midrange frequencies, but they sound pleasant on this speaker (ie aren’t harsh/tinny at high volumes and sound accurate). Haven’t tested the battery life because I keep it plugged in for the most part. Looks great and the new ‘handbag’ design makes this speaker far easier to transport, and you don’t have to worry about the cheap plastic legs on the previous versions breaking. ... show more
