The media could not be loaded. The gas detector weighs 3.0 ounces with the included 2 AAA batteries installed. I unscrewed the top and installed the batteries backwards. To get them out and reinstall them I had to shake them out. The detector has high and low buttons to set the audible tone. The detector has a clip. It is 7.0625 inches long and 1.21875 inches in diameter. The detecting stem is 1.59375 inches long, 0.75 inches in diameter, and just the vented portion is 0.65625 inches long. The display window is 1.0 inches x 0.375 inches. I wanted to test the area around the dryer to make sure there were no leaks. I turned the unit on (I had to be in a different area nowhere near where I thought the gas was leaking to get a baseline for the detector) in a different room and it displayed an installing bar cycle with a red background. It took 43 seconds to calibrate, preheating the sensor, and the display turns bright green with hi or lo and a power button symbol in the bottom corner. I left it on high. I walked over to the dryer and slowly moved the wand around the sides and back of the dryer and pilot light access panel. The detector did not detect any leaks. I took the detector to my moms. She has a gas stove that once in a while you can smell gas when you walk by, but when I get closer it dissipates. I did the same steps above and took it to the stove and there were no leaks. At this point, I wanted to check the detector when I knew gas was present, so I turned a burner on without igniting it. I repeated the same steps again and it sounded a high pitched continuous beep and the display lit up red and indicated all bars. This is one of those tools that you will never know when you need it. I am glad that I have it on hand in my tool station.

This is a portable gas detector intended to be used to find gas leaks. It is battery operated and runs on two AAA batteries (supplied). It has a high and low sensitivity setting and the small LCD screen that provides a relative strength of the gas being measured. This allows you to localize any leak because the graph showing gas strength will increase as you get closer to the source. I tested the detector on six different gases and it worked on all six. These were natural gas, propane, butane, MAP/Pro, gasoline fumes and cigarette lighter fumes. After turning on the detector, you have to wait approximately 30 seconds for the sensor to heat up. During this time the display will show a red background and a rapidly escalating graph that repeats over and over again. (See photos.) Once ready to detect, the background of the LCD display will change to a green color and will show either "Lo" or "Hi", indicating the sensitivity level. You can change this by pressing the Lo or Hi buttons. When gas is sensed, the background of the display will turn red and a graph will appear that gives a relative indication of the strength of the detected gas. The product itself is not labeled with its function at all. I had expected to see "Gas Detector" or similar somewhere on the product. One other minor complaint is the battery cap. Most battery caps are locked in place, either by a cap that screws on, thereby applying pressure to the battery contacts, or by a latch. This device has neither. Its snugly fitting cap simply pushes on, and then is secured by a tiny, single, radial screw. If you lose this screw, only friction will hold the battery cap in place. The detector worked well, but gives the impression of being a prototype. The displayed graph is rather crude, the battery cap seems poorly thought out, and labeling is extremely minimal. However, it works and does what it's intended to.

Low cost effective tool. My elderly parents live in a mobile home and wanted to make sure they were safe. I tried it on both low and high settings and found not too much difference to be honest in the distance. It still goes off right away as I tested it on the stove to be sure. I had to get right up to it each time. Pinpoint detector, not for general 1 foot or more type of range finder but PERFECT for spot checking pipes for leaks. Will be audible and flash red when detected then it resets. Takes about 30 seconds or so in a fresh area to set it after pressing power and display will beep when calibrated, then go and detect after. A good tool for every journeyman, plumber or pipe fixing at home. No leaks at mom and dads, so It's a win and I feel much safer. I feel the price is low enough for everyone and a must have tool. Be prepared with a tiny Philips screw, as you need this to put the included batteries inside. (see photo) It doesn't come with one. It takes, like, thirty to sixty seconds to respond. If it came with instructions, I didn't see them. I put it next to a propane stove and released gas at a high setting for 10 seconds, then triggered "LO" setting. After almost a minute, the screen lit up green, which I gather means "No gas detected." I'd hoped this could be used for checking connections for gas leaks, but I don't clearly see how it could be used that way. Listen, if I"ve gotten this wrong because of misunderstanding the use or the intended use, I'd be happy to be corrected and instructed in its proper use. Feel free to contact me on Amazon if you have better information.
