  • Halo continues to provide good value
We used Halo downlights in our whole house remodel in 2014. They have performed well, with only one 'early' (9-year) failure in the bunch; the rest are going strong. Those were an earlier generation of Halo LED downlights meant to replace incandescent lamps in IC can light fixtures. Today, with this newer breed of downlights, Halo continues to innovate and build in value. IC can fixtures are no longer needed; the LED modules now clip into 6-3/8" drywall holes and can fit below a ceiling joist, so they provide more flexibility to mount them where you want them. The power supply/junction box can be mounted on the side of a joist, just above the hole for the LED module, providing access for service. The junction box is cleverly designed to allow wiring to be done on a table, or the floor, (rather than overhead). The junction box has unique, U-shaped strain reliefs for NM cable that allow wiring to be completed, then the NM cable is pushed into the strain reliefs and the j-box doors closed to complete the wiring. The power supply/junction boxes also have U-shaped holes in their mounting brackets, so mounting screws can be installed in advance and several wired power supply/junction boxes can be lifted into place and their mounting brackets slipped over the mounting screws. Back in 2014, I had to shop to find downlights with the color temperature (3500K) we wanted. Now with these Halo downlights, color temperature is switch-selectable with 5 different settings. I am (again) quite pleased with my choice of Halo for this latest remodel project. One observation, regardless of the manufacturer... as LED and dimming control technology improve as years pass, it can be difficult to replace one light in a room with a newer vintage LED light and achieve the same dimming performance (especially at the low brightness end). I have found that it can be 'cheap insurance' to purchase one or more 'extra lamps' of the same model to protect against infant (or early) failures. In one room, a downlight failed and and I ended up buying a whole new set of lights because the new downlight dimmed quite differently than the originals in that room. (Alternatively, you may be able to 'trade' one lamp from a 'single downlight area' (closet?) and put the new one in there.) ... show more

  • Very bright and easy to install. Adjustable color temperature.
This is a bright can light that is super easy to install. In my location, I replaced an old can with this, which was actually more work than installing this on a fresh ceiling (because I had to remove the existing can). If you have junction boxes nearby to where you are installing these, have someone qualified to mount and wire a small electrical box, and a hole saw for can lights, you could easily install several of these in a day. The best part of this light is the adjustable color temperature. This setting is on the electrical box, so you'll want to set it before leaving the attic to match the rest of your house's lighting. 5 settings let you dial the color temperature in, though probably only 4 are acceptable to most (5k "white" may be great for building a SAW themed bathroom, but generally not a good lighting design choice). These are both brighter and a bit warmer than the other canless lights in my house. If you are installing multiple lights in a room, you'll want to stick to the same brand for all of them. That being said, I disagree with another reviewer's claim that these run hot enough to start a fire. If the temperature these run at could start a fire, then so could the air in the attic of my Florida home. Simply not true. These are a good value, easy to install, and have nice color temp features and brightness. ... show more

  • Love them! I have 7 of these. I will buy more.
My wife is worried I'm going a little overboard with the lights. I put 3 of these in my garage ceiling (2 or 3 more to go). And I plan on replacing our old 1990's "dual hanging down" awful kitchen lights (EDIT: DONE - See pics) in our vaulted ceiling with 4 more of these. Installing is pretty easy once you get over cutting your ceiling drywall. And the very limited needed space is so much better than the old school 6 or 8 inches for those old style canned lights. A huge plus is that you can adjust not only the dim level but also the color of the actual light with the 5 different settings on each unit. (I did also previously pick up one Halo light with Bluetooth so I can dim it while on Zoom/Teams/Video camera). Can't say enough about how great they are! Hope this was helpful and highly recommend! ... show more

  • Canless is they way to go!
My husband wanted to put recessed lighting in our bathrooms. In the first bathroom he got some at a hardware store that had cans. What a pain! Have to cut a giant hole for the can and installation of those was much harder than for this one, which we used in the next bathroom we did. If we ever do it again, I’ll be using this kind. The light is bright and good for putting on makeup. ... show more
