  • Good starter Lighting Kit
These lights are of good quality and provide consistent and dialabe light. The only thing I would like to see is an update to the app that supports the lights. These light are very versatile and a great starter kit. if you are looking for more power you will need to look for a different lighting kit as these lights cover a smaller area but in a good way. The ability to change and dial in the color temp and intensity on the fly is good. ... show more

  • VERY nice upgrade from the older RGB LED lights
I had been a professional photographer since 2008 and retired six years ago to focus on being as good of a father to my children as possible. That did not mean hanging up my cameras. I still use them to photograph my kids as they grew through the years. Towards the end of my photography career, I traded my bulb/umbrella setup for a RGB LED based lighting system instead, primarily for the lighter weight, more compact size, and battery portability. As a bonus, I liked the ability to control the lights via a Bluetooth-connected smartphone app without having to interrupt my shoots with the infant/toddler kids. RGB LED lights allow you to simulate and color-correct certain lighting conditions. From cool daylight (5600 Kelvin) to warm sunsets (3200K) and control over the intensity, hue, and saturation of the lights, the variety of scenes you could use this light kit with is quite open ended. The trick, as always with photography or videography, is to understand how light works and to use that to your advantage. The GVM 1200D is a very nice upgrade over its predecessor with over 3.5x the number of RGB LEDs, providing more consistent, smooth control of the intensity, color, hue/saturation of the produced light. A built-in diffuser helps cast softer shadows and make skin look more flattering on the subjects. Like its older model, the lights can be set as Master and Slaves so all the lights can be controlled together through the Bluetooth-connected "GVM LED" app (available on both iOS and Android). It also has the same amount of "lighting scenes" (8) that are activated through the app, though their use cases are limited to special occasions. The new, red-colored coating of the aluminum frame makes it stand out (compared to the black of its predecessor), and that could potentially cause a small, red color cast on the subject in certain shooting situations. I would have preferred that GVM kept everything black, but this is just a minor concern. 60W AC adapters power the lights, while the LEDs themselves are rated to output 50W (up from 40W of previous models). They can also be battery operated with Sony F750/970 batteries (not included) for on-location shoots anywhere outside for that perfect, low-light shot or video footage. Brightness, according to GVM, is rated at 22,000 lux at 0.5m (1.6') or 7,300 lux at 1m (3.3'). What does that mean? Lux is the intensity of light at a specific location away from the source. The farther away you travel, the lower the Lux rating, whereas the Lumen (light intensity) remains unchanged. In other words, these lights produce an intense amount of luminosity that can produce enough to fill an entire room. The lights' panels direct where the light should go and also help minimize spill onto the surrounding. Impressive still is the lifetime warranty with a 3-year, full refund guarantee. That is just unheard of and shows that the company had been standing behind its products (and why I had been a fan of GVM for years.) The light stands fold relatively compact and are quick to deploy. The light frames can be mounted to the stands in two ways to accommodate different lighting angles. When you finish a shoot, be sure you always turn off the lights. You do not want to leave them on and accidentally cause a fire. Impressive improvements were made with this year's 2021 model, and I will definitely sell my older kit. ... show more

  • Low quality stands, Studs don't fit light socket, no cord management
The media could not be loaded. The lights function ok from an illumination standpoint, however there are a number of issues with the mechanical aspects of them. I don't intend on using the app as I take photos with my phone making it unavailable for controlling the lights. My big disappointment are the mechanical parts fit, function and design. 1. The light socket fits poorly on the stand stud. The screw for tightening the light to the stud has a rolled edge that immediately gouges the stud/post. There is far too much clearance between the post and the light socket. The light socket is not deep enough to receive the stud such that the top of the post is fully engaged into the socket. The top of the post is too much smaller than the socket and doesn't have the angled larger diameter that I have on most of my other light studs. 2. The clamps for adjustment of the stand are plastic and rely on friction based on the tightness of the knobs. It is difficult to tell how tight they need to be and they release suddenly and unexpectedly. I like over center snap action clamps much better. 3. The power supply is in the middle of the cord and hangs obnoxiously from the plug on the light. There is no provision for cord management and no mounting method for the power supply. 4. Mounting the light vertically as indicated in the manual immediately limits the travel of the angular adjustment because the barn doors don't fit through the light U-bracket. Maximum downward angle is roughly 30 degrees. U-bracket on one of the lights is bent into an arc instead of straight. 5. There is no information on the size or how to insert a gel diffuser. Without a diffuser the lights are very harsh. 6. The beads for creating the white light are separate from the RGB beads. There are far fewer colored beads than white ones. The light output intensity for the colored lights is far less than what is advertised for the white light. There are 22 rows of 3K/6K white versus 7 rows of RGB beads. As far as I can tell there is no way to turn on the white beads and the colored beads at the same time, limiting the usefulness of the lights to color only or white only. It would be handy to have the option of adding a little color to the white only beads for warming up skin tones. Things I did like: 1. Carrying case is simple and effective for storage or moving the lights. Not super heavy duty but appears it should do the job well. 2. Lights dims in 100 steps. 1% step is super minimal light output. This is a huge improvement over the other GVM white only lights I have where the minimal brightness level is many times more intensity than I want. 3. The balance between the yellowish white and blue white light beads is much better. ... show more

  • Hands down, the best RGB panels I have used.
I'm an award winning photographer & videographer. I have tried many RGB light brands in the past and there's always an issue. Some would not be bright enough, some would flicker on a video and some would just get too hot to the point your model is getting a tan. This was my first time trying GVM lights and OMG! I have 0 complaints. They produce amazing power for both photo and video. The interface is super friendly and easy to use, I didn't even had to read the operating manual. It has super convenient removable barn door which makes your life so much easier by preventing light leaks where you don't want it. The super flexible Dimmable Saturation / Hue / Brightness and White Balance makes these lights produce the right color and the right amount of power when you need it. If you do your research on lights before you buy like I do, then take my word for it. Stop reading this and do yourself a favor and buy these now. The quality you get for the price is just out of this world. There is nothing better in this price range and trust me, I have tried really expensive ones and I will still choose GVM over anything else. I will be using this light for every shoot! @tommydvalle on IG ... show more
