  • Loving my cork mat!
Material Type: Sprout Yoga Mat
I have been doing yoga for about 15 years and in that time I've used many different types of mats. Most recently I was using a used LuLu Lemon mat and a Manduka (I'm not sure the exact models of either). The LuLu was just plain worn out and the Manduka was just too thin and uncomfortable, and I was almost always losing grip with my hands. So the search began for a new mat...and lasted for about 1 year! If you're reading this, you know what I mean: everything is either seemingly cheap (and how good/long lasting can it be?) or ridiculously expensive (in my humble opinion). Where was the middle ground? I just began Yoga Teacher Training (upping my yoga practice personally AND professionally) so I wanted to INVEST, not just purchase. I also wanted it to be environmentally friendly because that sort of things is important to me. I came across a top ten list of the most eco-friendly yoga mats (and manufacturers) and used that to narrow things down. The problem with those types of lists is that they tend to focus on larger corporations/etc. I also love to support small(er) business, even though many companies (like Manduka and many other established names in the yoga industry) are reputable and I believe have respectable processes and practices. Somewhere in my search with all of this criteria I came across cork yoga mats. I was very intrigued...but it opened up yet another can of worms and spirals of more and more searching! Then I found Gurus. Their item description spoke to me and so I decided to turn away from a fabulous deal on a Manduka EKO mat and give this one a try instead. So far I am VERY satisfied with this purchase. Here are the highlights in my book: No plastic or off-putting smell. While there was a bit of an odor, it wasn't unnatural or invasive and after a handful of uses, is totally gone. Most reviews I read said cork is fantastic for hot yoga as the non-stick aspect is even BETTER with sweat/moisture. Reviewers said if you do NOT sweat you may need to mist the mat with water before using to help "activate" the tackiness. This almost turned me away from cork, as I don't practice hot yoga or sweat (too much anyway). However, my hands almost always warm up and I find myself slipping within minutes of practice. I have NOT misted this mat before use and I also have NOT slipped! My feet feel grounded, my hands feel grounded...but I can also flow from one asana to another without a squeaking, sticking problem like other super-tacky mats. I'm stoked about this! One cork mat reviewer said he feels more connected to the Earth when practicing on his mat. I have to say that I agree! I love having the steadiness underneath me while I practice WITHOUT the plastic-like feeling. When my face is on or near the mat, it is pleasant and almost comforting. Perhaps that sounds a bit odd, but some of you readers will understand. The thickness is perfect! I don't have to double the mat up when I'm on my knees or other asanas. It's also not so thick that it interferes with balance. It rolls out nearly flat every single time. There is often a little bump at the edges, which concerned me at first, but it has not once moved or shifted during practice. It sticks to the ground wonderfully. The reasonable price of this mat was a huge selling point. If I didn't like it or it wasn't up to my expectations, at least it wasn't $100+ down the drain. I figured that for less than $60, it was totally worth a shot. And I'm so glad that I went for it! I LOVE this new mat and having been telling everyone about it! ... show more

  • Best mat ever
Material Type: Cork Yoga Mat
I LOVE this mat. I practice hot yoga, where the room is 105 degrees and humidity 40-and 50%, for 90 minutes. This mat is thick, sturdy, and non-slip. It's very soft and comfortable without being squishy and unsupportive. The best part - wipe it down (very easy to clean) with no scent of sweat embedded into the mat. I've used for 2 months now, just to see...and every time I unroll my mat it has no scent. Can't say enough how amazing this mat is ... show more

  • Great for sweaty yoga
Material Type: Sprout Yoga Mat
I have now had the Sprout cork yoga mat for a month. I wanted to wait long enough that I could see how it was doing. I am using the mat on average 5 days a week, so I think this is long enough for me to make some judgements. I bought this cork mat for 2 reasons. First, I do ashtanga yoga. I sweat a lot. I want something that will prevent slipping. With my regular mats, I am having to use a towel, which I have to spray when I start so that it’s grippy. Even after spraying and using a towel, I slip on the regular mat when I’m doing my back bends. When my teacher got a cork yoga mat, he was telling us how lightweight and grippy it was. Which takes me to the 2nd reason I wanted a cork mat: I was looking for something lightweight that I could use for travel. Regarding the first reason, this cork mat is working very well. The first time I used it, it wasn’t quite non-slip enough. The second time, I sprayed. I stuck so well, I didn’t think my feet were going to move when they needed to. Since then, I have not been spraying it. I might have minor slippage during my first or 2nd vinyasa. However, after that, I’m good. As far as the lightweight aspect, the Sprout is very lightweight. It weighs less than half of my Manduka pro light mat. It’s great for taking to and from class. Im not sure how well it will travel. I would not want to fold it (vs. rolling it) because folding could damage the mat. When it’s rolled, it would take a rather large suitcase to hold it and anything else you needed for travel, although it would not make your suitcase weigh too much. You might be able to take it as a carry-on on an airplane, but it might be too wide. I think it would be dependent on how strict the airline is. However, it will work great for any travel by car. Some additional info: When I first started using the mat, I noticed indentations and I thought the mat was cracking. However, it has not changed from that first week and there is no indication of cracking. It seems to be holding up fine. Before I purchased the mat, I was trying to get information on its expected life. I had tried to get the same information from another cork mat manufacturer, but they didn’t seem to think it was necessary to answer me in anything resembling a reasonable amount of time. I posted the question to Amazon users and got no answer. On the other hand, when I posted the question on this mat, I not only got replies from users, the manufacturer also answered my question. They guarantee for 3 months and their users have responded that the mat is lasting over a year. Seemed much smarter to me to order this mat, which was half the price, than to order the other mat. (Incidentally, the other company did answer after I had already ordered this mat. They said their mat had a 30 day guarantee.) Regarding the claim that the mat dries fast or water slides off it: this mat really does dry well or get rid of moisture well. Even when I wet it, I was surprised to find it dried within 5 minutes, while still keeping its grippiness. It’s great for a sweaty practice. One more thing: I am not sure I would want this cork mat if I were doing a type of yoga where I didn’t sweat. I also do yin yoga. I am still using my Manduka pro for yin yoga. Its thickness is great for the long held poses. So, I would rate this cork mat as great for people doing a vinyasa style yoga that makes you sweat. ... show more

  • Quality mat
Material Type: Sprout Yoga Mat
Overall pleased. I’d still like the curled ends to lay flat. It is not as grippy as I’d like, but that’s probably due to the lack of dangerous plastics. I guess I’m supposed to sweat a lot more to make it grip better.
