  • Nice driveway alarm. My pros and cons (plus my thoughts 5 years later)
Style: 1 Sensor + 1 Receiver set [500 ft]
Update Sep 2022, 5 years later: One of the few things that has worked great through rain, sleet, snow, heat and all things Mother Nature can throw at it. Been very happy with this purchase! The sensor finally started having issues 5 years later and found the sensor screen cracked and condensation was getting in. Just bought another one! Highly recommend this product! Update Sep 2018, 1 year later: It is located out in the weather and everything has worked great through a year of use in our driveway; very cold winter and very hot summer. I changed batteries recently but did so out of precaution, not because the batteries were weak. We drive in and out at least 4-5 times a day, children ride bikes by it many times a week, along with several trips to the mailbox. About the only thing to watch is when replacing batteries the little screws will fall out if not careful so I placed a white towel underneath since our alarm is mounted on a post with pine straw underneath. Excellent product and has been great, highly recommend. You can see my full review below. REVIEW: After researching several products including much cheaper alternatives, I ultimately decided on this particular brand/model. We use this specifically to alert us of cars coming into our driveway. If you are looking to use this for security reasons, be aware the sensor blinks red when motion is detected which can be seen at night. Based on two week’s usage, I highly recommend this unit thus far and here is my pros, cons, & discoveries after a few weeks of usage: Pros/Discoveries: • Easy to setup and install. Read the manual first! • Transmitter easily mounts to anything. We used a 4”x4” treated post mounted about 3’6” above the ground. Post is overkill but does look nice. • Does not seem to have many false alarms but will pick up anything within the range of the sensor which has enough movement to trigger the sensor (as it should). Had one alarm over two weeks that we never saw the reason for the alarm. Perhaps something blew across the sensor. We also have a sprinkler system which sprays water across the sensor and it never alerts, which is good. • Install the sensor at least 3-4’ above the ground which will avoid most dogs/cats/squirrels, etc., and do not place it on metal. I also would not place it near/within range of bushes/tree limbs or similar items which might move with the wind. • Adjust the sensitivity distance on the sensor (you must remove the four screws on the sensor to do this). Our driveway is for one car so I decreased the sensitivity level to 23’ (set 39’ from the factory). Options are 13’, 23’, 26’ and 39’. • You can easily adjust the angle of the sensor once installed. • Has a sensor low battery indicator which flashes inside on the receiver. • Easy to add other sensors if needed up to 16 (4 on each zone). • Uses common batteries. Sensor takes four AA batteries (should last a year); receiver uses four AAA batteries and/or wall outlet power. Receiver can be plugged in with batteries installed acting as a battery backup if power is lost. • Receiver has plenty of sound melodies to select (~30), and can be very loud if volume is adjusted all the way up. • No problem with range as our sensor is only about 150’ from the receiver but does go through a couple walls. • Our sensor is installed in the weather without any other coverings. Based on the instructions it can be mounted anywhere outside and I don’t see the need to put the sensor inside a protective covering. • I like the removable top of the sensor to keep out weather and sunlight on the sensor. • The 12 volt relay is a nice option for linking to alarms, gates, or whatever else you might want to do. • Receiver is easily turned off and on. If leaving home really early on weekends for example, I’ll turn it off to avoid waking my family when I drive out. • Came with a small screwdriver which fits perfectly to remove tiny screws in the sensor for battery installation and sensitivity setting. CONS: • I thought the sensor would have been enclosed in stronger PVC (aka thicker plastic). But it does have a lifetime warranty as long as the company is in business. • Would have liked more color options for the sensor. For example, black, white and camo. • Worried about losing the small screws when adjusting sensitivity and/or replacing the batteries in the sensor once installed. Our sensor is installed over a plant bed with pine straw, so I had to put down a white towel under the unit when opening the enclosure to make final sensitivity adjustments. Would have been nice if the sensor came with the type screws that don’t fall out when unscrewed. • Receiver is not the nicest to look at but we managed to place it where it was centrally located in the house and not so obvious. • There are over 30 melodies available but we were hoping for more chimes/bells similar to doorbell type options. Many are song type melodies which we didn't like. Overall very pleased and highly recommend. I would like to see a wifi enabled version for alerts on a smartphone if desired. Will update this review should something change. ... show more

  • Inexpensive, easy to set up, ,reliable
Style: 4 Sensors + 1 Receiver set [1320 ft]
Pros: - very effective around the house. Good for armadillos, raccoons, deer, hogs, humans, etc. I haven't tested for cars. - very few false detects. - you can switch select 4 levels of sensitivity (distance), nighttime only or day & night, speed of object, etc. - they hold up as well or better than the Dakota MAT sensors (based on the last batch I bought years ago.) - battery life is great (at least 2 years, just two AA batteries) - setup is pretty easy... takes about 5 minutes per sensor (mostly fooling with the screws) - for less than the cost of one Dakota MAT sensor, you can get 4 of these sensors plus a receiver. Cons: - they have worked everywhere I have placed them near the house, but they are NOT long-range sensors like the Dakota MAT - furthermore, you can't attach an external antenna and you can't monitor with an analog (e.g. ham or scanner) radio. You must use their receiver. - instead of synthesized voice alert ("zone 1", "zone 2", etc.) you have to choose from dozens of cutsie tones for each sensor (from a simple "ding dong" to the Indiana Jones theme song). You quickly learn which tone goes with which zone, but I prefer the synth voice approach. - I haven't tried to repair one of these sensors, but I suspect that it's harder to do than a MAT sensor. But at the price, I'm a bit more comfortable just throwing away one of these sensors when they break. - In order to replace the batteries or change a dip switch, you have to remove 4 tiny screws. Not a big deal, but a bit cumbersome. They supply the matching screwdriver. ... show more

  • OK, But Could Easily Be Better
Style: 1 Sensor + 1 Receiver set [500 ft]
Update. I've had this installed for almost six weeks now, so here's a little more information: The swivel/ball joint that attaches the sensor to the base plate is still looser than I would prefer, even at max tension setting plus some minor modification in an attempt to tighten it up more. In about 6 weeks, I have had to re-aim the sensor one time so far. I assume a bird landed on top of it, and that was enough weight to cause the sensor to then point down to the ground. It's simple to readjust, but disappointing that you have to do it. It's been through heavy rain several times, and it's also been in temperatures in the upper 20's so far. In both cases, it worked normally and had no apparent ill affects. I don't believe that I have gotten any "false" alarms, but it does go off 4 or 5 times a week during the day due to small animals (dogs, cats) and large birds (crows) that wander near the sensor. I imagine that problem will vary from customer to customer depending on each individual situation. Overall, I'm generally satisfied with it. Some things could be better, but some could be worse. The information written below was from when I first purchased and received the unit: I bought this simply as a monitor to let me know when someone is driving up my driveway to my house. I mounted it to a brick column next to my driveway. That location puts the sensor about 200 feet away from the receiver in the house. I've had it in place for less than 1 week, so this review is of initial impressions only, not long-term operation or reliability. It has been in the rain for one day, rest of the time the weather has been mild and fair. So here are my first impressions: Pros: Easy operation once setup and installation are complete; set it and forget it. Decent looking; not a huge eyesore. Bottom line is, it works. Does what it is supposed to do. Alert goes off every time someone comes up the driveway; has had no false alarms when someone is NOT there. Cons: The sensor housing is very soft, light-weight plastic. I would like it better if the housing, which is exposed continually to the weather and direct sunshine, were a little heavier. It came with an additional "snap-on" sun shield to help shade the sensor "eye," but I did not install it - it's a little difficult to install, but then doesn't seem very secure once it is installed. The sensor is attached to the mounting plate via a ball joint to allow the sensor to be easily adjusted to point in different directions once the unit is mounted to the post or whatever. There is an adjustment screw to set the tension of that ball mount, to make it harder or easier to adjust. Even at full tension on the adjustment screw, mine was too easy to be moved. I took that ball joint apart and used coarse sandpaper and roughed up both the ball and the socket in order to give it a little more friction so it doesn't turn so easily. That helped some. The mounting screws need to be larger. They work ok hen mounting the unit onto a perfectly smooth and flat surface (like a board or metal plate) but the mounting screws are too small when mounting to a rough surface like a tree or a brick wall. I drilled out the mounting holes and used larger screws to mount mine to a brick wall. The sensor has to be dismantled while mounted in place in order to replace the batteries. It would be much better to have some kind of battery access door, or at least some easy or quick disconnect to be able to easily dismount the sensor unit from the mounting base in order to replace the batteries. The four screws that do hold the sensor together (which have to be removed to replace the batteries) are very small and are in deep recessed holes in the front of the unit (the four black dots in the corners in the photo of the sensor). Those screws are not captive to the cover; they will fall out when they are unscrewed. It would have been simple and easy to make those screws captive so they don't fall out when loosened. My immediate solution is to simply magnetize the end of the supplied small screwdriver so I'm less likely to drop the screws when removing them. The receiver unit in the house is a little wonkie looking, but I guess there's no accounting for taste. The few controls it has are straightforward, and it's simple to operate. The entire bottom cover pops off to replace the three AAA backup batteries. The power cord for the inside receiver unit needs to be longer - it's only about 3 feet long. The operating instructions are quality printed on nice heavy slick paper stock, but the instructions themselves could be a little better. The sensor and receiver units have to be "paired" to each other. I figured it out, but the instructions could be better. I currently only have the one sensor and receiver; additional sensors and receivers can be added and can all work together if desired, but from reading the instructions, I'm not sure that I would know exactly how to do that. Read some of the other reviews. There are some other noteworthy items, but I just wanted to cover my initial observations in my review. For me, overall a good unit, but could be made a lot better with a few simple changes. ... show more
