Rarely do I review products but I feel compelled to this time. Like a lot of others who have given reviews, I am amazed at the professional quality of this guitar at this price point. I also have been playing guitar for 25 years and my most expensive guitar is a PRS Custom SE 24 (retails around $849 at Guitar Center). I love my PRS but I learned on a guitar that was basically this GROTE guitar. However, the brand I had at the time was ‘Jay Turser’, also a semi-hollow body in a slightly deeper wine red (that guitar played/served me well for about 10 years playing out until it broke beyond repair). BACK THEN (1998?) I paid $350 for that guitar and have been through many guitars since. I always wanted to get that Jay Turser back so I found GROTE and I'm so glad I did. I do have some technical knowledge of how guitars work so I was able to set this guitar up, but I also did such LITTLE adjustment that anyone with a little patience could do it. It came packaged perfectly with no damage whatsoever. The neck was straight as an arrow (which is a great place to begin from to create a slight up-bow but honestly, I didn't bother with a truss rod adjustment!) The straight neck also created a lot of buzz which after tuning up, was (mostly) solved by lifting up the saddle (turning both turning wheels left with strings de-tuned). I stretched the stock strings over and over until I had good tuning stability and MAN! This guitar plays like a dream! No issues with electronics or finish or…anything (okay it's a little neck heavy but what more can you ask for for this price?!) Fantastic tone! It's beautiful! In short, there are more adjustments I can do to make her even better but for now, I'm hooked on this guitar plugged or unplugged! Get it. Buy a case! Take good care of it. You won't regret it.

I’m not sure what got me interested in a 335 style guitar. I think it was a video review of the Sire H7 that originally caught my eye, then sent me down the road of comparing all of the more affordable 335’s out there. I watched a bunch of reviews for the Sire, Ibanez, Firefly’s, and the Grote. I was convinced that anyone of them could be a good purchase, but the Grote was the least expensive, with pretty much all positive reviews. Based on those reviews, what I was expecting was a decently made guitar that was poorly packaged, would need new tuners, immediately need new strings, a fret polish, and set up. All things I’m capable of doing myself, and actually enjoying tinkering with so, for $185, I thought this could be a fun project guitar to mod and work on. What I got was a well packaged guitar, with perfect fit and finish. I looked at every inch of this thing looking for flaws in the binding or clear coat. Once I tuned it up I was surprised that the strings were actually pretty good. The frets were nicely polished with rolled edges, feeling like a high end premium instrument. The tuners aren’t bad, and there’s no need to hurry up and replace them, though I had ordered a replacement set with the guitar, expecting them to need immediate replacement. The set up out of the box was perfect. I checked for buzz at every fret, none. I didn’t measure the neck relief or string height, since they were both to my liking. I Checked the intonation, spot on. Checked the nut the way Phil McNight does, and it was perfect. So now that the build and set up passed, it was time to play. Before I ever plugged it in, once I started playing it, I couldn’t stop. The neck, which some have described as chunky, just felt perfect in my hand. I definitely wouldn’t describe it as chunky myself. A little fuller than a Strat neck, but in no way a negative. For me, the feel of the neck is everything. If it doesn’t feel good, nothing else can compensate for that. Plugged in, it’s just as impressive. I’m the opposite of a tone snob, so I don’t have the vocabulary to describe the nuances of the pick ups, and I don’t have an impressive rig to play through. What I can say is, from clean to dirty and in between, it sounds great to my ears. It was easy to get the iconic jazzy tone, and just as easy to get it to rock. I’m in no way a guitar expert as a player or a tech, but in my 30 years of playing, mostly as a hobbyist with a little gigging experience, I can’t say enough about how impressed I am with this guitar. I’ve played mostly Strat style guitars, Squiers, a MM Sterling, PRS SE Silver Sky, PRS SE 24, to name a few. I even had a cool Chibson Scotty Moore for a while, which gave me my first taste of the shorter scale. This guitar is definitely on par with all of these, and at a fraction of the cost of any of them. Hats off to Grote for being able to offer something this good at such an affordable price point.

i ordered this for my daughter as a Christmas gift. she already has violin and plays sax this instrument i feel like she would appreciate. The scale is good for smaller hands 24.75. feels like 10 gage strings. was almost perfectly innoted right out of the box. Stainless steel frets on a instrument at the price point is amazing. The neck is straight and comfortable C shape feels like 12 inch radius which is good for smaller hands. easy to play but upper frets are hard to reach. This is good starter guitar for someone learning. nice string action and no sharp frets thanks to them being SS ball end.nothing on this would discourage someone from picking it up to practise and learn.The description says P 90 pick ups but they are regular covered humbuckers that i dont know if they are microphonic or not which is ok because it can be played without an amp. came with 2 sets of cables and allen key. very nice finish on this and doesn't feel like a cheap guitar.

I received my guitar, opened the box, stretched out the strings and it was perfect. Intonation is spot on, great action and tone. I have 4 other guitars and this Grote is currently my favorite. I was looking for a Epiphone Casio but couldn't find one at a reasonable price. I'm really happy with guitar. Buy one, you won't be disappointed.

Right out of the box this guitar was beautiful no cosmetic problems tuned it up truss rod adjusted right frets awesome and not to bad tuners minor adjustments nut work intonation all doable electronicly sound for 200 bucks buy this product if you're looking for an affordable semi hollow good job Grote!

Wow! $190 delivered to the door! This guy is really finished well, very pretty. What I found when I did the set up: -- There were 2 or 3 high frets. I am not going to worry about them now, and maybe never. Still plays well. -- The relief on the neck was fine. (The bow of the neck that is adjusted by the truss rod) -- Action was a little high for me. Easy adjustment. -- Pickup height was good. -- Intonation was way off. Adjusting it was funky. When I restrung it, I found out why. The bridge fit was very sloppy. -- I put new D-Addario .011 strings on and it it really sings now. (SRV used .013 on his strat). -- When I took the old strings off, I noticed how sloppy the bridge fit was. It had a lot of free movement back and forth and IMO this can cause tuning and intonation issues if the bridge moves about when you are playing it. I even had this problem on my old Epiphone Casino and the same with the Guyker $15 replacement roller bridge it put on it. Anyway, the fix is quick and dirty. Get some plumbers Teflon Thread Tape (<$2) and wrap the threads of the bridge posts with enough tape to where it won't rattle back and forth. Do the same with the top of the posts where the bridge slides on. -- After the set up, I have no problems keep it in tune. While I'm sure that a $90 set of Grover tuners would be better, I'm not going to put them on a $180 guitar. The first key to keeping a guitar in tune is to learn how to properly restring them. First, learn how to properly wrap the string around the tuning post so it won't slip after tightening (watch Youtube). Then after strung and brought up to pitch, stretch the strings by pulling up on them and then retune. Repeat a few times. However, it would be nice if the tuners were a little finer granularity. I think these are 15:1. May a 19:1 or something like that would be an improvement. Anyway, I love the way this plays and sounds. Going to keep it. I do wish they would offer a $20 gig bag option. Finding a inexpensive gig bag that fits was very tough. I found one, but it is too tall for it. It works, but could be better. BTW, I read that the size and shape of these are different enough from the Gibson ES-335 and Epiphone that hard case designed for them will not fit the Grote. Have not verified, but we careful if going that route.

It's not supposed to be this good. I'm amazed at how well the guitar is constructed. The finish is first-rate. The neck is straight, the action is low and there is fret buzz. The volume and tone turn smoothly and the switch is solid. The pickups are ok and deliver a nice sound. I wasn't expecting the guitar to play as well as it does. I've got more expensive guitars that don't play as easily as this one. I did have to set the intonation on a couple of the strings. I also had to set the string height up a little. Amended review: After having the guitar for a week I've had a chance to look it over. I had originally scored the guitar as 5 stars, mostly for the finish, playability, and price. However, I have lowered the score based on the issues below. 1. The tuners could be better. I ended up replacing them with a set of locking tuners from Amazon. It's much easier to tune now. 2. And this is the biggest issue I have found. The nut slot for the low is cut WAY too deep. It plays but there are issues with the buzzing from the deep cut. I'm going to have to have the nut replaced eventually. This is an extra expense that shouldn't have to be spent. The nut should be correctly cut as a matter of construction. 3. The bridge is wobbly with a LOT of play in the threads. This really should be fixed at the factory. I found some fixes for this on Youtube which I will do when I change the strings next time.
