  • Nice guitar-and not just 'for the money'
Color: Vintage Sunburst
I'm a terrible guitar player, but a halfway decent amateur luthier. I've been building electrics from scratch for 15 years now, and do everything from cutting the fretboards to winding my own pickups. I've owned guitars from one-off customs to Squiers, and can generally make any of them play decently and sound acceptable. That said, there are some guitars that just aren't worth the bother. This is NOT one of those. The finish is great, though there are some streaks and marks (in the wood, under the finish) you wouldn't see on a more expensive guitar; I like wood, so I enjoy those. There's no chipping or nicks on any corners, nothing round that should be square or vice versa. It's as nice looking as anything you'll see this side of a Gibson CS or PRS, if you can overlook the poly (and I can; it holds up great!) I'm ready to do a fret level/polish crown on ANY guitar I buy (and have had to to it on $1,500 guitars straight out of the box) and was amazed when I didn't have to do anything to this Grote except polish the frets lightly, oil the fretboard and set the action; no high/low frets, neck in perfect relief from the factory. It set up to low action and plays cleanly across the neck. The electronics all work; the volumes and tones have usable sweeps, no slop and feel sturdy. The switch is a bit of a wobbler, but works fine. The pickups (I'm such a pickup snob....start winding and you'll NEVER be happy with another pickup again) are acceptable. The bridge is a bit thin, the neck a bit boxy, but I've heard worse on $800 guitars (I'm looking at you, Ibanez.) Hardware seems OK, though the tuners are pretty sloppy; they work and hold tune, but will likely get replaced; bridge and TOM are just fine for the purpose. The biggest complaint I have is that they dyed the fingerboard to get it that deep, consistent color it is, and the dye isn't particularly colorfast; brown fingers from playing, though oiling the board and a couple sessions and it's already going away. I think the fact that that's the biggest complaint I have on a $169 dollar guitar is pretty amazing. ... show more

  • really nice looking guitar, well set up from factory, great deal
Color: Natural
The guitar is set up at the factory, and then the strings are detuned for shipping. After delivery let the guitar acclimate to the climate in your house and tune the strings and see how it is before trying to do any other setup. Mine came with fast low action and good intonation. There was just a little buzzing from the first two frets on the low E (to find out which fret is causing the buzz, I slip the corner of a single ply of tissue paper between the string and the fret wire and move it from fret to fret as I pluck the string). The nut was cut a tiny bit too deep at the low E, but polishing down the two fret wires at issue took care of the buzzing. Cosmetically, the guitar looks great overall, and the p/u switch and pots work smoothly without crackling or dropping out. Good weight balance, no weird tipping either way. Tuners are fine, and the strings stay in tune. Only other thing I might recommend is change to nicer feeling and sounding strings. The factory strings feel a little rigid and the sound is a bit lacking in warmth and fullness. ... show more
