  • Good solid unit for the money.
I’ve had my drill press for close to three years now. I’m mainly using it to drill steel plate and angle with an occasional wood project . I’m very satisfied with the performance. Bearings were broke in properly and are warmed up every time before subjecting to hard use. Run out at chuck is minimal. I measured Two and a half thou 3” below chuck using a drill rod as good as I can measure. Plenty of speed options and the motor locks will get the belts tight enough to do some heavy drilling. I’m using this as weekend warrior but I has been a great choice so far. I took of a star because one of the motor cam lock bolts In the headstock came loose and fell down inside not long after I purchased it . I had to almost completely disassemble headstock to retrieve it. I used loctite when reassembling( did both sides) and it’s stayed put since. Headstock did have some sand in it so I got the chance to clean everything up nice. Overall I’m pleased ... show more

  • Just choose another
I will start by saying that I didn't get this item off Amazon, but from Grizzly's site directly, however I'm so upset with the quality of this item that I'm going to leave a review here too as long as Amazon allows it. So I got this press to make deep cuts through hardwood. I'm using a 3 5/8 forstner bit to do it so I was looking for something that's more heavy duty. This press has had nothing but issues. When it arrived the top ring that holds the bar the table goes up and down on cracked when I tightened the set screw. Then whenever the power surged on the press it would trip my breaker. Assumed this was a power issue so I connected it to a generator with a 20 Amp circuit. Now the belts are slipping when I try to use it. I can only assume that the 15 amp circuit (which should be able to handle it really) was just flipping the breaker instead of pushing through with the motor and having the belts slip. I can't understand why my father's drill press from 1950 can cut through 4 inches of hardwood in minutes without even blinking and this "industrial" press is just burning and dulling my bits or the belts. At this point I guess I will buy a new set of belts, because really what else is there to try but if I had the option I would return this piece of garbage. Stay far far away! ... show more

  • Definitely not what I expected
This machine was far below my expectations. When I received the machine and got it set up, there was a noticeable grinding (metal on metal) noise in the headstock area. I called support at Grizzly and they shipped out a couple of quill bearings for me to replace. Upon receiving them, they were not the same as the ones in the quill. Apparently the machine was updated, but not the manual. Even the support guy did not have an updated manual. Also, the interior of the quill area was full of leftover sand from the casting process. Since I could not replace the bearings, Grizzly agreed to swap the headstock. I took it back to Grizzly and they decided not to swap the headstock, but to replace the quill only. Upon getting it set up again, it was as noisy as before. This time I took the whole machine back to Grizzly. While they agreed it was noisy, they felt it was quieter than most of their units. They decided to add another rubber shim to the quill to cut down on some of the noise. They also replaced the motor which was bad, and the chuck which was found to be defective. Upon getting it home and running it again, it was worse than ever. There was no way I could live with the noise of this machine so I returned it. The service people at Grizzly were kind and courteous, but they could not overcome a very bad machine. The runout on this machine appeared to be significant from the naked eye, but I never measured it due to my frustration level with the noise problem. I have other Grizzly products that I am satisfied with, but there appears to be a definite problem with this drill press, especially since they stated that my unit was quieter than most. ... show more
