Depth perception, quality, and color sets the bar for 2019. “Hypersmooth” is indeed a great innovation. I used it without a gimbal on a chest mount while participating in a bike race and got the stability desired from the stabilization technology, without the extra hardware. I showed some people the footage, filmed at 1080p/120FPS, and they made comments along the lines of “It feels like you’re actually there.” This camera is capable of far more. After watching reviews of the Silver and White, I decided to just pull the trigger on the flagship model. I don’t regret it at all. Two words of advice: 1. Be SURE you get an SD card listed as compatible. Google “site:gopro.com sd cards” and check the list on the first result from GoPro’s website. These approved cards are not expensive these days. The same card you used for previous generations with great success will not necessarily keep up with the throughput needs of the amazing framerates and resolutions the Hero 7 Black can produce. If you’re having issues with freezing — either in terms of camera interface or video footage — check your SD card before blaming the company behind your new investment. You NEED one that meets the “U3” (a “3” in a “U” shape printed on the card) spec. I used a “U1” and was able to get a good amount of footage at 1080p/120FPS, but some key moments had only audio captured, with a single frame frozen for the video. No one to blame but myself. 2. Buy additional batteries for any filming activity you expect to take more than 60 minutes. If you’re going to selectively film here and there, you may be able to get away with one battery, but if you’re like me, filming everything then editing back home, you’re going to want additional power. Take advantage of the swappable battery. There are solid options for third-party batteries, so spend a bit more to give yourself the ability to “capture the moment” the next time you break out the camera, letting the sweat come from the activity in question rather than the battery level. Overall, yet another good release from GoPro. There are some good competitors out there that may offer more advantage in terms of cost versus features if you just want a camera capable of catching good video, but when it comes to the current generation of action cameras, GoPro once again sets the bar. ... show more

Firstly the HyperSmooth setting is genuinely impressive. Even going down rough, rocky trails on a mountain the footage is shockingly smooth. I used the chest mount which worked very well. I did have a video sample on this review but it looked awful once uploaded. I guess it was whatever processing Amazon does to videos you upload as I uploaded the video to Youtube and Vimeo with no problems. The stabilization in the TimeWarp (hyper lapse video) mode is not quite as good as in the HyperSmooth mode but works well. When I used TimeWarp while mountain biking it was watchable but a little rough. When I used it while on a road bike with was very smooth. The SuperPhoto HDR setting in photo mode also works shockingly well. I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the images it produces in the linear FOV with SuperPhoto turned on. I haven’t had any of the connection and setup issues that others have noted. I have a Google Pixel 2 and was able to download the GoPro app, turn on the Camera, install updates, and have it up and running with no problems at all. I know it varies by iOS vs Android and what phone you are using, but if you have a Pixel 2, you shouldn’t have any issues. Hopefully. I didn’t anyway. Cross your fingers. My only negative thing to say so far is the battery life is not great. You may as well go ahead and buy at least one more battery and the multi-battery charger. Turning off wireless connections while filming definitely helped with battery life but on the other hand it is also really nice to use your phone to control it with using it. All in all I really like it. I haven’t had a GoPro since they didn’t have touch screens. This is the first one with enough features to entice me back into the GoPro world. This one is easy to use. It produces good footage. It’s waterproof and rugged. I can use it as an action camera and as a small point and shoot travel camera. That is basically what I’ve been hoping a GoPro could be at some point and I feel like this one actually delivers on that. ... show more

having owned many go pro's with my last latest the 5 black the 7 is worth it especially for motorcyclists etc. the stabilization is night and day difference for engine vibration when I want to tank mount etc. Also the higher quality modes do make a very noticeable difference. Downside the stabilization's not supported in all resolutions, and on a motorcycle the stabilization can cause a (over correction look when corning/leaning) so it can look like you are doing more bar adjustment in corner then you actually are and gives a twitch look sometimes. Does it replace a gimbal. sort of. all depends on what you use it for. it give s a slight gimbal like effect. *slight. defiantly smooths the video but it does not replace a gimbal yet. and the million dollar question. night video. it's gotten better, and holds the black color with very little noise, but it performs best with a solid ambient light source around the areas you are shooting for best detail even if the primary object had ilumination. if my primary was recording night video, I would be looking at other options. but it has improved. My view is this. - If you own the 6, yes the 7 has more features but is it worth the upgrade cost. Prob not, and I would wait for the 8 as the 7 adds some gimmicks, but its very similar to the GoPro 6 and quality output to justify. - If you own the 5 or models below, YES, much better camera across the board to justify the price. Whats included, same ol same ol. nothing new or special. and yes you still need to use the stupid GoPro adaptor to run a microphone. Good news batteries are the same as the 5,6, etc so if you have prev models everything will be compatible. Biggest pet peeve. The new cover on the camera, its outer shell not the plastic mount case housing... scratches very easy. its just cosmetic but seems silly for a rugged camera to scuff up so easily. ... show more

I bought the GoPro recently and tested it during a longer trip this pandemic summer! Before I bought it, I was skeptical about two things, the battery life and the overheating issues. After having traveled, I have to say that thing does get quite hot, and that rather easily. I haven't had an issue of where it overheated and shut down but I have also not, given what I've done, taken videos that were longer than 5mins or 20min time lapses. You can definitely tell it's getting hot, especially around the lense. The battery life is also not the best and I'd recommend another battery. What I personally don't like is how slow the thing is from pressing the on button to actually be able to record. That is surely a pain in the ass. You have to press the on button for like 5 seconds and then the screen turns on, the camera is booting, and if you then happen to press record, it won't do it until it displays everything correctly. Only then it is ready to record which I find counterproductive and have missed quite some shots because of that. I just pressed record the moment I could the screen turn on but yes, that's too early. You need to wait until everything is displayed. I'm also not a fan of the wide/superview view. Yes, it is not only amazing but actually shocking how WIDE your field of view can get when you use wide or superwide and I can see how you definitely want something when you're in the right field and do action sports etc. However, when you just want to take a normal video of something, the wide/superview FOV distorts the pictures quite a lot that many things that should have straight lines are far from straight which means that if that is really a pain in the ass for you, you can only shoot in 2.7k because 4k only works with wide or superwide. The quality out of this little box of a camera is shocking. I'm not sure how you can have such an INCREDIBLE quality come out of such a small camera OMG!!! And the hypersmooth stabilization is also shocking. You surely don't need a gimbal because that is just from a different world. When you walk normally and take videos, it is so stabilized, just like in movies. My verdict after having it on my first big trip, meaning I surely haven't tried out everything etc but I'd definitely recommend it. Surely, there is the battery life, the heat, random freezes, and the wide/superwide thing, but the quality and the hypersmooth so make up for it!!! ... show more

I personally have been a fan of GoPro's over the years. I've had close to almost all of them and the few I didn't, I had the chance to see how they performed overall. This is the one GoPro up to this point that I have invested in a few of them now. I've never done that ever. I've never thought to myself that it was so neat I really needed another when I had a few others I could use, but the Hero 7 Black does so much I really find it hard to use any of my older GoPro's durning the filming process. The image stabilization is amazing! This action camera really makes anyone that isn't very good filming look pretty decent. I've been filming RC (remote control) vehicles over many years using these and it takes a super steady hand to get some awesome shoots. This has allowed me to relax a bit more while filming and driving at the same time and still get some better than ever shoots. That's what is amazing. There is more to it than just filming little RC vehicles. The TimeWarp feature is one of the coolest things I've played around with. I've never liked putting together time lapse videos but the fact that this thing can do a pretty neat time lapse is so cool! Yea they have fixed a lot with some of there updates, but it is so worth getting one and doing some neat stuff with it. Vlogging with one is amazing. The built in mic's are better than ever. I'm pretty impressed with the sound quality and then if you add a mic setup it is, Wow! So for what this thing can do out of the box is amazing, but just messing with some of the features can enhance the quality so much. So over all this is well worth getting one. You will be impressed with everything you can do just with the basic's and if you decide to set it up to do some amazing things you will be blown away! ... show more

I've owned every generation of the GoPros and purchased one of these for professional work just to check out if they are really THAT much better. There are two key features that you will want to upgrade to if you have a 6 Black. 1. The new image stabilization can handle all the way up to 4k at the full frame rate. It looks like you have the camera mounted to a gimbal or tripod. It's amazing how good it works, I can go run or ski down a hill and it looks perfect, no more jitter. The old go pros had that bouncing affect , the new 7 Black looks like a professional film crew shot them! 2. The live stream option, the ability to take all your awesome shots and stream them directly to facebook live or instagram is awesome! I sold all my 6 Blacks and moved to 7 Blacks just for the stabilization reason. It should be noted that the 1080p stabilization is pretty much the same, it really only matters at 4k , so if you don't want to shoot in 4k just go with the older version, but why not shoot in a higher format and just down convert it later. You will be future proof when you want to show your grand kids one day the amazing things Grandma or Grandpa used to do in 2019! ... show more

I have to say that, even though I have 2 older GoPros (3+ Silver, 4 Black), I've never been a big GoPro fan. I think mostly because of the fisheye and really short battery life, plus the fact that there really didn't seem much tech improvement between the models to warrant another $300-$400 (in my opinion). However, I have to say that I'm very impressed with the Hero 7 Black. It is very easy to use, the back screen is easy to maneuver, and the video quality is very good. The stabilization is very nice, I'd say as good as the DJI OSMO Pocket (which I also have) I really like the higher frame rates, even if the stabilization isn't supported. The battery life seems far superior to past models, still not super awesome, but I can usually get about an hour. One 'hmm' point is that if you want to add extra power to extend recording, you can't do it with the mounting shell on. I wish that were possible, as I often just start the camera going while mounted (for things like timelapses) All in all, A+. I think this time they have an action camera that can beat it's closest competitors. ... show more

Screen can be finicky at times, battery life is horrible but other than that a very worthy upgrade. Compared to previous generations the Go Pro to App connection is much quicker and less of a hassle. I have owned a Go Pro 5 Session with Evo GP Pro Gimbal and by all means the Hero 7 Black is NOT better or equal in terms of stabilization compared to a Gimbal . With that said..the Hero 7 Black is the closest you will get in terms of smooth stabilization without a Gimbal and if you’re not a professional videographer etc this is a must have action camera! As an avid traveler I want smooth videos without dragging along more weight and components and The Hero 7 fits the bill perfectly! With a Gimbal it’s so smooth at times you get videos with unnatural movements, with the Hero 7 the Hypersmooth stabilization smooths out your video without looking unnatural. Now all I have to take on my travels are my Hero 7 and Shorty stick. ... show more
