Description

IT WILL GIVE YOU NIGHTMARES FOREVER!A rooftop sniper guns down 14 pedestrians on the streets of New York City. A mild-mannered dad takes a shotgun and blows away his wife and children. A cop goes on a sudden shooting spree at the St. Patrick's Day Parade. And each of these unlikely killers makes the same dying confession: "God told me to." Now a repressed Catholic NYPD detective (Tony Lo Bianco of THE HONEYMOON KILLERS and THE FRENCH CONNECTION) must uncover a netherworld of deranged faith, alien insemination and his own unholy connection to a homicidal messiah with a perverse plan for the soul of mankind.Written, produced, and directed by Larry Cohen (IT'S ALIVE), this critically acclaimed cult classic remains one of the most disturbing and thought-provoking horror films of our time. Deborah Raffin (DEATH WISH 3), Sandy Dennis (WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?), Sylvia Sidney (BEETLEJUICE), Mike Kellin (SLEEPAWAY CAMP), Richard Lynch (BAD DREAMS), and Andy Kaufman (TAXI) co-star in GOD TOLD ME TO, now presented in a new 4K restoration from the original uncensored negative, with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, packed with revealing Extras! Review GOD TOLD ME TO is without question one of darkest, sharpest, oddest films on this list, a tale of serial murder, religious mania and alien abduction shot on some of mid-'70s New York's least salubrious streets. Cohen deserves to be mentioned alongside Carpenter and Craven in the horror canon - and this might be his masterpiece! --Time Out New YorkOne Of Larry Cohen's Most Cohesive And Articulate Works! --DVD VerdictHugely Entertaining! --TV Guide

  • No one does 4K better then Blue Underground
You can’t ask for any better picture and audio quality then what Blue Underground gives you. This is another stellar release with a crystal clear picture, colors that pop off of the screen, and an Atmos track that immerses you into the world. The movie itself is ahead of it’s time. It is almost a supernatural proto-slasher, that’s the best way I can describe it. It has a lot of familiar faces throughout. It is a film I had never seen before, but I am glad I now have it in my collection. ... show more

  • Great movie
Keep an open mind when watching this movie. I enjoyed it, but this movie is not for everybody. Interesting story and this movie is a classic horror/sci-fi. The 4K transfer looked really good.

  • You definitely Get Your Titular Line's Worth of Hearing People Say "God Told Me To."
Director Larry Cohen mixes Däniken-esque "ancient aliens" theory with some good old fashioned horror tropes to create a pretty original and wild sci-fi/horror blend. One day a man in Midtown Manhattan climbs his way to the top of a water tower and starts firing rounds at people down below on the streets, all Charles Whitman-style. Lieutenant Peter Nichols (Tony Lo Bianco) is a detective and not a crisis negotiator, but still takes it upon himself to climb the ladder to the tower and have a chat with the gunman. He gets the guy's name, age, and finally his motivation for taking to the skies to rain hot lead down onto the already-scorching NYC streets: "God told me to." This disturbing statement sets in motion a chain of events that will send Lieutenant Nichols all over the Big Apple, from a depressing residential nursing home to a Harlem pool hall and then finally into a fiery inferno where some kind of messianic psycho cult leader is manning the boilers in a basement that might be hell. The quality of the film is uneven, both its production values and its story logic, but some of the performances are compelling (if a bit histrionic and over-the-top) and the movie manages to actually demonstrate a bit of brains and soul in exploring questions of faith, fanaticism, and the nihilism of purely secular living. There's a lot of stuff about Catholocism, some stuff about Judaism, and a WTF cameo by Andy Kaufman as a killer cop with smoldering Sam Berkowitz-esque psycho eyes. In terms of director Larry Coen's oeuvre, I rank this one at about the same level as "The Stuff," and a notch or two below the superlative "Q: The Winged Serpent." Recommended, though brace for some creepy vaginal prostheses (a la "Videodrome") and a bit of the old extraterrestrial in-out, as the Droog Alex might refer to alien probing. ... show more

  • Meh
God Told Me To (4K) Dir. Larry Cohen 2/5 I just can't understand how movies like this get 4K releases. It just seems like a waste. This movie may have been "edgy" in the 1970s but it's not anymore. There is some biting social commentary but the script just basically blames aliens. If this movie had gone less on a sci-fi direction it would have been better. This also wasn't scary at all and just seemingly had lots of random things happen. The 4K transfer was great though. But again I don't know if movies like this deserve to be on the format. I only bought this to try and expand my collection and watch something I haven't seen. I'm probably not gonna watch it again that's for sure. ... show more

  • Bizarre thriller that explains why Larry Cohen was a unique cinematic voice...
"God Told Me To" is a strange film, part quasi-religious film and part mystery-science fiction plot. I think this is probably the most memorable role ever given to Tony Lo Bianco for the movies. It is Cohen's ability to combine elements of the TV scenario police procedural with an emotional story involving misidentified faith that makes this his best film, if not always his most enjoyable. Cohen really is a talented visionary, and the fact that he cast the ingenious Andy Kaufmann here (my favorite comedian by far) is a testament to both his foresight and his audacity. It is always interesting to survey the cast of a Larry Cohen production. "God Told Me To" is awkward enough to not be on everyone's list of 'must-sees', but it simply goes to prove that Cohen intended to produce more unusual fare for the Cineplex, and it is sad that those days are long gone. This is, however, a must see film if you like the Cohen stock. The Blue Underground DVD is the usual immaculate treatment, with plenty of great tidbits offered in the Lustig/Cohen commentary track. Now this guy knows how to record an audio commentary! His movies on DVD are always enjoyable. B+ ... show more

  • Wonderful Transfer With Clear Picture and Stable Audio
This is a Blu-ray review. Wonderful reviewers have detailed the plot and critiqued the acting on this one, both here and on other sites. The Blu-ray of God Told Me To contains a wonderful restoration of a film that has, up to now, only been seen in faded prints with washed out colors and inferior audio. While not perfect, this transfer was carefully conducted with superior video, bright colors in comparison to other versions, encoded at a high bitrate to minimize compression artifacts. The sound, again, is not perfect, but it is the best I have heard for this film and has notable improvements in stability, evenness, and in the viewer's ability to hear quieter dialogue as compared to the previous incarnations. Overall, this is a film that I would label as worthy of an upgrade, given how much better it looks and sounds and in spite of the high cost. Good luck in finding something you will enjoy. ... show more
