  • Great alternative to gas generator!
We bought this generator two years ago from Goal Zero when it first came out, along with the needed accessories and two solar panels. You’ll need that stand! We had an electrician do the necessary wiring to the circuit box. Primary purpose was to run our full size French-door refrigerator. Other three outputs targeted to living room lights and TV, a computer router and, to a limited extent, the microwave. We only had a few opportunities to try it out for an extended period of time until Idalia on August 30. The power went out at 6:40am. After a bit of confusion getting everything switched over and running smoothly all went well. Primary problem was getting the associated app on my iPad to provide the same information as displayed on the Yeti itself so we didn’t have to keep running to the garge to check it. Fortunately it was now day so lights not needed in living room. Instead it kept portable device chargers operating and a fan since the AC was out. (We’re in Florida). Trying to use the TV and computer router turned out to be useless since Comast/Xfinity went offline at the same time the power went out. The way we communicated with family elsewhere was by cell text and cell phone. The refrigerator hummed right along all day. The sun came out around 4:00 so we quickly set up the solar panels outside to catch the last of the sun of the day to keep the Yeti charged after the sun went down. We used the app to determine what adjustments needed to be made to balance charging input versus outgo use overnight. The app and on the Yeti itself gives you readings on time remaining on the charge. We were as prepared as we could be with downloaded movies and books to our iPads and Kindles for the night. Surprised when the electricity came on about 6:30pm. Twelve hours. Cable/internet followed shortly. We were prepared to be without power for a couple of days anyway and were wondering if the Yeti would be up to the challenge but it looked promising. The definite pros are you can actually take this in the house if you have to because it’s battery operated. Gas NOT required! Ours is stored in the garage ready to go. It’s reliable and regular maintenance is not required. Cons are it is not a full blown, whole house, runs everything generator but you aren’t paying that price either. We filled the bathtub with water for toilet flushing since the Yeti is not connected to our well pump. We limited use of other connected devices to conserve battery and we have solar powered lights for after dark. Also, you’ll likely need to try and get the solar panels out as soon as you safely can to keep the Yeti charged. The early picture of the solar panels showed us we needed to reposition the panels to get the maximum benefit of the sun. You may need an extension cable or two to connect the panels outside back to the Yeti inside. ... show more
