  • Compact performance!
The media could not be loaded. I picked up the GMKtec AD-GP1 External GPU Docking Station with its built-in AMD Radeon 7600M XT GPU to give my mini PC a bit more graphics muscle without hauling around a full desktop tower, and it’s been a great fit for my casual gaming needs. Setup was as simple as plugging in the USB4 cable, installing the drivers, and firing up Quake Champions. Over USB4, I’m running Quake Champions at 4K with medium settings and 50% upscale, hitting over 100 fps. I know I’m not tapping into everything this card can do—switching to the OCuLink port (which offers twice the bandwidth of USB4) should push frame rates even higher and smooth out any remaining stutters. I plan to upgrade my mini PC to one with OCuLink support soon and will update this review with before-and-after numbers, but even on USB4 the performance boost is clear compared to the onboard graphics. Physically, the AD-GP1 is impressively compact and fits neatly next to my monitor. It doesn’t dominate my workspace the way my old tower did. The fan stays fairly quiet under load—you’ll hear it spin up during intense sessions, but it never becomes distracting—and the overall heat output feels much lower than that of a full-sized gaming rig. If you want a straightforward, space-saving way to get 4K performance at reasonable settings without building or carrying around a full desktop, the GMKtec AD-GP1 hits the sweet spot. It balances size, noise, heat, and raw gaming ability perfectly for someone who just wants smooth frame rates without chasing ultra-maxed settings. I’m very happy with it so far and look forward to seeing what it can do over OCuLink. Note: The color looks a bit off in my video, but that seems to be an artifact of my phone's camera and screen. The colors look great when viewing in person. ... show more

  • Probably works great, but needs instructions
I am at a loss getting it to work. I’m one of those people that needs to read the instructions and there are none.

  • GMKtec AD-GP1, very easy to use.
The media could not be loaded. The GMKtec AD-GP1 speeds up my computer. It does a great job speeding up my rendering and running the programs smoothly. It also improve my game play performance a great deal. Set is very easy. It’s plug-n-play and only took only a few minutes to hook up. It runs quiet and doesn’t get hot. The GMKtec AD-GP1, is well made and comes with Oculink cable, USB-C cable and 240W power brick. Once everything is connected and powered on, the machine boots up as normal. There are no drivers or anything else to install. I like how small this unit is and how simple it is to use. For the price, this external GPU docking station is awesome. ... show more

  • Great add-on for Mini PC and non-gaming laptop on Linux too
I notice that there are many reviews out there for GMKtec AD-GP1 eGPU on Windows, but I haven’t seen one for Linux yet. This review is Linux-focused to show that it works great on Linux. I bought this because I already have a Mini PC K7 Plus and it doesn’t have the gaming horsepower, so I decided to give this a go to play some of my games. Surprisingly, it works right out of the box with Kubuntu 24.04 and Bazzite OS. I tested it on my mini PC (i7-13620H, 32GB RAM) and Dell Latitude 5320 (i7-1185G7), both via Thunderbolt 4. For Windows users, a quick note: make sure you install AMD drivers before plugging in, or your display won’t show up. In the box: Compact size eGPU, much smaller than typical desktop GPU USB C cable and Oculink cable Bulky 240W power brick even larger than the eGPU Setup? Super Easy! Setup is plug-and-play on Linux, easier than Windows. I tested AD-GP1 with: - Dell 5320 via Thunderbolt 4 with Kubuntu - Mini PC K7 Plus via Thunderbolt 4 with Bazzite OS. Both recognized it instantly—lspci confirmed it in Desktop Mode. Pure plug-and-play Performance I would say this is about laptop 3060 level performance. Or ~2.5x Steam Deck performance. Or ~3x AMD integrated graphics like 780m. - The Witcher 3: 60 FPS constant on High settings at 1080p. - Counter Strike 2: 65-100 FPS at 1080p - Guild Wars 2: ~75 FPS solo, ~30 FPS in group zergs at 1080p. - Street Fighter 6: solid 60 FPS for Low/Medium 1080p. - EmuDeck emulation works great as expected Noise Level The AD-GP1 is silent during idle. During gaming sounding similar to a typical gaming laptop. It’s noticeable but as expected. Overall The AD-GP1 is good add-on to device without GPU. Valve and gaming on Linux via Proton is getting really, really good - works flawlessly out of the box. Shout out to Bazzite OS, it is really good distro. Adding GPU via USB4/Thunderbolt does not make use of all the capability of the chip, which is a shame. I wish I have Oculink device to boost the performance by 10-20%. ... show more

  • Do NOT buy!
Do NOT buy this! There is no power on/off switch. The unit is on all the time. Causes computer to no shutdown or reboot randomly during shutdown. This external eGPU does not work during boot! You cannot see your computer during post or boot. Visible only when Windows is loaded.

... show more

  • Works wonders with my 2024 HP Envy
I'm really into VR gaming, but right now I'm limited to my college laptop. I bought this egpu so I could play the games my integrated gpu couldn't handle. Without the egpu, my laptop couldn't even load google earth vr. But with the egpu, I could play Boneworks on high graphics! I was able to get 60+ fps on No Man's Sky, just with the thunderbolt 4 connection. It is put together well and portable, so I can pop it in my bag without worrying about something breaking, like with a egpu case. It does a good job of cooling itself off, and really isn't too loud. With the thunderbolt 4 cable, it's plug-and-play. The drivers were super easy to find and install on device manager. In short, this thing is fast, it works well, and it is definitely worth the money. ... show more
