I was really looking for a bright read helmet as most of my ski gear is red. Apparently, that's also ski patrol in some cases, so I'm finding it tough to find such a helmet. Or people don't like to stand out against the snow! Then, I found a great ski jacket here that had a slightly darker red 'mantle' so this helmet looks better with my red jacket. The other score is that the interior foam is slightly forgiving. The way it tightens is that it 'clamps' from the side, so I gather it has to be a foam with a little give. This is important as you don't want to replace it if you drop it on the driveway after getting out of the car ... some types of crash helmets "give their life" so you keep yours, but this means after every hard knock you have to replace it. (honestly, for an actual accident PLEASE replace the helmet). I also thought that might be slightly warmer. Which leads to my headline - I measured my head, and I'm near the edge of medium, but figured it would fit as I've cut my hair dramatically. Turns out, it's pretty tight. I do have to 'crank it down' a tad, but if you put on a wool hat, it wouldn't fit at all. I did buy a thin balaclava to go under, so I hope if it's really cold out that'll be enough. You might want to think about a size larger. I needed it for a ski trip I didn't take, had I been smarter I wouldn't have cut the tags off before putting in my ski bag and returned it for the larger size, but really it should be fine. I'm not taking off a star as this has nothing to do with the helmet, it's sizing guide was exactly accurate. Plan ahead!

I tried the Giro Range MIPS after trying out the Smith Vantage, which came highly recommended. I’m sure it’s a great helmet, but I have a narrower head and I found the Smith had pressure points all around my forehead. I tried out the Giro Range on the basis of the fit system. As you can see in the product photos, the plastic shell is divided in the back, which allows it to expand and contract. Instead of tightening a band around your head, the helmet shell reforms really naturally. For me, the result is just a great fitting, comfortable helmet. It really is just incredibly comfortable. It also comes with anything else a top of the line, major brand helmet - the really protective MIPS system, magnetic buckle enclosure. It also has an integrated Go Pro mount which snaps on and off, so you can hook up a camera without having a mount permanently affixed to your helmet.

I've had Giro helmets all my life and absolutely love them. The Giro Range is probably one of the best snowboard/ski helmets on the market. We have been using them for a number of years and have 5 helmets for the whole family in either Range or Stellar. Very high quality and comes with lycra carry bag, stickers and GoPro mount. The only Con I can find with these helmets is with their design. As they have an adaptive moveable hard shell they can feel tight around the ears if you have a set of OT Chips 2.0 in them. Giro have thickened up the earpad neoprene in the latter models from 6mm to 9mm which has helped a lot. Other than that such a fantastic helmet especially when you grab them off season from Amazon at a great price.

Four stars for right now and will update later once I've had it a couple days on the slopes. First impressions are wow, this helmet is well built and very comfortable. They didn't skimp on any of the components when making this helmet. It's easy to use with gloves on and the adjust-ability makes this helmet firm but soft and comfortable on the head. The inner lining is soft and the low profile makes it look great when you're wearing it. It's also nice that it comes with the GoPro mount if you're into that sort of thing. For now, I think this helmet will work out nicely.

There are so many things to like about this helmet. The adjustable ventilation, quick adjust for tensioning and the magnetic chin strap are fantastic. I fully recommend it.

I am shocked how narrow this helmet is. Immediately after putting it on I thought I ordered a size too small. Nope. It's just that narrow. And quite light. I've been using a non-MIPS Bern helmet for several years and as much as I've enjoyed it and stickered it, it's being quickly retired. My only gripe is that the ear flaps aren't forgiving enough. Old man ears mixed with some ear flap headphones and you're pinching your ears some. You have to cram the inserts really down and forward otherwise it could be a little tight and compress on your ears.

I really wanted to like this helmet as it had all the features I wanted such as Mips and expandable width. Unfortunately, my head is round and this helmet is rather long from front to back. This means that while the sides of my head fit well, there was too much of a gap at the front between the helmet and the upper part of my forehead. As a result, the helmet could swivel fairly freely from front to back, which is not something you want for safety. Other than that, it's a great helmet if the shape of your head isn't round but more of an oval. This helmet is very light, for sure.
