I’ve been impressed with this GIRAFFE TOOLS Retractable Air Hose Reel from start to finish. It arrived packaged extremely well, and everything you need for install is thoughtfully placed on top of the unit’s packaging inside the box: the very well-written user’s manual, the hardware needed for install, and even a template (made of stiff card stock) for installing the bracket that holds the hose reel. Moreover, the unit itself is constructed very robustly. It’s made of “professional-grade steel,” brass fittings and is coated with a finish that should ward off rust and corrosion. It seems very durable and, with proper care, should last many years. Installation was quite simple, but just be sure to use the enclosed template, as the user guide describes. The hose reel is also very easy to operate: when pulling the hose out, it will automatically “lock” at any point you wish; then simply give it a little tug and it will automatically begin to retract. Couldn’t be any easier, and works like a charm. And unlike my old hose reel, this one will swivel 180 degrees—which is very useful and will help extend your working range. (My old one didn’t swivel at all.) Most importantly, the action of the hose reel is smooth as silk, both coming out and going in. My only concern with this enclosed unit is, what happens if the hose somehow got tangled up inside or got stuck at some point? I honestly doubt this will happen, but, if it did, I could first try to pull the hose out again to see if it would reset itself properly when retracting. If not, and worse comes to worst, I’m happy to report that—unlike so many other companies nowadays—Giraffe Tools lists both an email and a phone number in their user’s manual. (I’ll at least mention their support email here: [email protected].) Also, take note that this air hose reel comes with a manufacturer’s 2-year warranty (only on new tools with a receipt). This is truly an excellent retractable air hose reel that is the epitome of a heavy duty build. It’s fairly heavy but not too heavy for one person to install. (Although admittedly a helping hand would have been appreciated when installing.) The hose pulls out and retracts with utmost ease, doesn’t get tangled and has a hybrid construction that should ward off wear and tear for years. I’m very pleased with this unit, and HIGHLY recommend it for your garage, shed or carport.

This Giraffe air hose and reel is a good addition to any garage. I've been manually wrapping and unwrapping my air hose for years, and this reel is a time saver and a great improvement. It mounts easily on the wall or ceiling (I recommend wall unless you can mount it to a joist). It comes with a mounting template, plate, and all the required mounting hardware. Depending on your set up, you may need additional hose fittings to complete your installation. The hose is long and flexible. The reel works well. And it looks good as far as such things go. I like it.

I waited about a month to leave this review. First of all the product looks really nice and came packaged really really well. The installation was fairly easy, but I definitely recommend you. Make sure you get this installed onto a start as it is pretty heavy. If you can’t install it on a stud, then I would make sure you get some sort of a backer board to mount it to because this will not hold in the drywall with the provided anchors. When it comes to functionality and build quality, I think it’s pretty solid. Functionality is an easy five out of five and it works really well and I would give the build quality a four out of five. Some of the panels were a little loose and had really large gaps in the mounting bracket is somewhat loose when you secure the actual real to the wall. Not the bolts going to the wall, but the actual real mounting to the metal bracket. I wish there was a bit more of a secure fit, and a proper bearing there instead of just a tube into some folded sheet metal. The fittings aren’t the best and are fairly short. Even with a lot of Teflon tape, I’ve still had some leaks when used with fittings that I know don’t leak with my other hose that doesn’t have a self winding reel after packing more Teflon tape if it seems like I’ve gotten most of the leaks to go away, but it’s still not perfect. Another grip is that it doesn’t come with any of the actual air connections. At this price point I would expected to come with at least a couple of connections. The short hose that attaches to the compressor should be a couple of feet longer. It’s too short as is and makes it really tricky to mount it on the wall. If you have a shorter compressor like I do. I had to get another patch piece in between for it to be able to be mounted high enough. Honestly, the biggest grip and why I gave it three stars instead of four stars is the smell. I’m not sure what the hoses made out of but once I opened the box, the stench was awful. My entire garage smelled like a skunk family was dismembered in it. For once, I wished that my garage was detached as the smell was slowly permeating into the house. I had to take the hose reel off the wall and leave it in my driveway for a couple of days to see if the smell goes away. The wall was mostly gone and after re-mounting it back on the wall, I realized that the smell wasn’t coming from the outside, but it’s the actual material that the hose is made out of. As soon as you start using it and pull the hose out the smell of returns and is awful. I mostly use this when I’m detailing my car and the smell permeates from the hose into the air that’s coming out of the other end as well which makes my car smell like a skunk. Honestly, pretty disappointing from giraffe tools as I have a couple of their other pieces and I’ve never experienced this. Unit functions and works really well, but I’m not sure how this material smell made it past QA.
