This Ginkin water filter is very compact, sturdy, and user-friendly. It will filter up to 793 gallons of water. It also uses a hand pump, as opposed to a straw system; straw-like emergency filters work by drawing water through them using suction from your mouth. Some people are unable to use the straw filters because of health or other issues. I purchased two of the Ginkin water filter pumps recently after seeing that a severe cold snap in Texas also resulted in a large amount of people cut off from clean water for several days. It came well-packaged as you can see in the picture. As far as I can visually tell, each piece appears to be made well. I bought it in preparation for my very first backpacking trip that I'm doing with my friend this spring. There were a lot more pieces than I expected, and as a newbie, I find it a little intimidating to put them all together, but that's just my lack of experience. Similarly I'm nervous about my first backpacking trip. Hopefully this thing will save my life out there. If I come back alive, I'll report back on its field performance. I bought this item a couple years ago to play around with and test out. The first thing I noticed was how difficult it was to pump water. Indeed it was difficult to get any water to come through the filter at all. The watertight gasket on the pump cylinder I think is oversized. I immediately got the feeling I was going to snap something off. I put it away and didn't really give it much thought. Fast forward to last week when I took it on a multi day hike when no surprise I'm still having the same problems. I expected it would be the same and brought along a backup filter in case this one failed. On the morning of the third day of the hike I'm filling my water bottle when three pumps into it the handle snaps off. I put maybe five gallons through this thing and it failed. Buyer beware...if you want a pump to keep in your house to make you feel better without actually having to use it I suppose you could buy this but don't bet your life on it. ... show more

I ordered this outdoor survival water filter straw to add to my emergency kit. Obviously, I am unable to rate it until the time comes that I have to use it. In the event I do and it works to specs, (I see no reason to believe it won't) it will be a lifesaver. I plan on getting a couple more of these straw units for other family members plus a larger pump type treatment kit to add to my disaster supplies. The straw takes up very little space and has a shelf life of 5 years. One of these can treat almost 400 gallons of water. It weighs almost nothing and is a great item for back packers or campers to carry with them. In the event of a natural disaster or event that results in limited or no access to clean drinking water, this straw is a must have. It is a very inexpensive insurance policy. ... show more

First filter in the intake like looks like it could get plugged up quickly. And from what I've seen so far is you can't get any replacement filters. You would have to buy a whole new one in order to continue use of one, But maybe could be possible to find something to put that filter in something to filter first before it gets to the real filter to catch larger debris first like a sock or something that you can change in order to extend its life possibilities.
