  • A Solid Mid-Tier Board
Processor Description: B550 Size: B550M AORUS PRO-P Style: Bundle
Ever since I made the jump to Zen 3 coming from Zen (1), I’ve seen it deliver the performance I need for high refresh rate gaming in 1440p. However, that’s not entirely the point of this motherboard. I’ll cut to the chase: This has most of the features that I need in a motherboard. But it is not without its quirks. The good things about this motherboard are, as most B550 chipset motherboards would have it, the build quality is significantly higher, there is probably better cooling for MOSFETs and chokes, and better memory compatibility. However, there are some people who refute that the fancy “heatsinks” shown on this motherboard barely do much of any cooling, and that is probably very true. However, I am not doing any sort of overclocking, nor am I using PBO2, to even see any real difference, so I have no authority to prove them wrong. Also, it just works. But with this motherboard in mind, I have just enough I/O to use the most basic amenities plus others I need hooked up to the PC, such as my webcam and UPS, with a bit more USB ports to add other extras, such as a HOTAS joystick. On top of that, it has currently *more than enough* SATA ports to accommodate for my SATA drives (including DVD drive). It is capable of supporting a rather toasty Ryzen 7 5800X, and has the required PCIe guard to support larger, heavier graphics cards or other PCIe x16 cards (by maximum). Also, most headers are well-positioned, which is a great thing. Now, what are some of its cons? The issues involve the most recent BIOS update where it ties itself to Windows 10’s Power Plans (the software feature is present since the Windows XP days), so trying to make changes to PBO2, and automatic over/undervolting and overclocking limitations somewhat proved to be just pulling hairs at that point. It is a mere inconvenience, but not “game-breaking”. Another con is they have the rearmost fan header positioned with the 8-pin EPS (CPU) header, which makes connecting your rear exhaust fan very cumbersome. It’s also worth mentioning that they moved the USB 3.0 header towards the bottom of the motherboard, which translates into serious clearance issues if you’re using a graphics card that is at least three slots deep, especially in the intended mATX case you planned on building in. However, if you’re not using a megahunk of graphics power and cooling (e.g. a graphics card that is no more than 2 – 2.25 slots deep), this will end up being a tiny gripe. Another con is just… I know it’s integrated audio, but this is one of the corners Gigabyte really cut on. The integrated audio (codec) isn’t awful, but it’s kind of a letdown considering I did not have enough room for a Sound Blaster card that I had been using (and honestly have been *spoiled* by). The overall audio quality is basically mid. However, I have recently researched that the audio codec/chip it uses is basically entry level for a surround sound setup. The drivers for it are really just basic; it doesn’t have features that are almost just as similar to Sound Blaster’s drivers, which I now dearly miss. However, once I upgrade to a future graphics card that only takes up no more than two slots without it nearly burning to death, that will no longer be an issue. But if you’re not all that picky on audio, then perhaps this paragraph doesn’t apply to you. As of now, however, I use a third-party EQ that somewhat does the trick, but I find some things about it that are kind of loopy that may be amplified (no pun intended) by the chip itself, but that is beyond the scope of this review. On top of that, pricing isn't terrible. But I really recommend getting it at a significantly discounted price: that being, if it's at least 25% - 30% off. Pictured below are some of the general and detail photographs of my current PC using this exact motherboard, with probably some of the largest components money can buy—and yet you can still have just enough room with this motherboard to operate, breathe, and sometimes even work in whenever you’re about to upgrade or change something out. Just know that in general, if you’re using a taller, wider cooler and larger graphics card like the ones pictured in here, you will have to use a flathead screwdriver in order to remove your graphics card, and that you may have to squeeze a little to make it all work. ... show more

  • Realiable support for XPM memory and BIOS updates
Processor Description: B450 Size: B450 AORUS M Style: Bundle
So i bought this motherboard to replace my Asrock b450m Steel Legend, after lots of problems with Asrock and lies about supported XMP memory plus Asrock destroyed four M.2 SSD drives in one year !!!! I got fed up, since ive already got a mini pc from Gigabyte and was quite satisfied with the quality, stablity and support ive decided to swap my motherboard from my gaming rig with Gigabyte B450 AORUS M. Positive: - actually supports XMP that they claim to support and works flawless. - PCIex slots are better placed duo the fact that the M.2 SSD is placed right under the GPU - PCIex x1 not usable when installing graphics card - PCIex x4 usable with graphics card installed - M.2 SSD slot is fitted with heatsink (i decided not to use since my case is well ventilated) - BIOS is less fancy but actually does what it supposed to do. - Plenty USB ports and better placed (2x USB2.0 / 4x USB 3.1 gen 1/ 2x USB 3.1 gen 2) Negative: - lack of fan headers 2 sys fan, 1 cpu fan header (you'll need to use splitters) - no water pump header (if you use an AIO cpu cooler you already lose 3 connectors) - only 1 M.2 slot - finicky M.2 slot, difficult to install and you need to install the spacer under the SSD (took me 2 tries because the first boot the SSD was not found duo bad contact and had to re-seat the drive) So far i had around 1 week to test out this board and i'm already more satisfied then with the Asrock board. I didn't need to reinstall all windows but i did had to re-activate windows, everything just ran and started fine without any problems after swapping the board. I let it run for 2 days non stop, without any hickups or crashes. I ordered some fan header splitters because the lack of connectors on the board. The user manual is significantly smaller but explains very well how to install and configure. The board came with BIOS version F60 and ran my Ryzen 2600x out of the box. Will certainly buy Gigabyte again ! ... show more

  • Very nice upgrade from the A320 motherboard that I had prior
Processor Description: B550 Size: B550 GAMING X V2 Style: Bundle
Pros: ATX Motherboard Had plenty of fan headers including 3 pin and 4 pin ARGB headers Really nice chunky VRM heat sinks Built in I/O shield Overall just a great board Cons: I gave it 4 stars because while it did come in the original box, upon receiving the item, there wasn't any additional packaging which you would think since it's a motherboard being shipped and the possibility of damage during shipping, wasn't a very bright idea. Would have been nice to have a little more extra security like an additional box and bubble wrap in the box covering the motherboard in its original packaging. The Gigabyte software is not too bad, but not the best I've seen either. Overall: Really great motherboard for the price. The description said in acceptable condition which meant there would be cosmetic damage of 1" or more. I have to say, there was no cosmetic damage on this board at all. I paired it with the Ryzen 5 5500, MSI RX 6500 XT, PNY 3200 mhz 16 gb ram, 2 SSD drives, and 2 HDD drives. It works beautifully, and is also nice to have the Smart Fan 5 so that you can get warnings while playing if your CPU goes over a certain degree of your choice. Can't quite get Secure Boot to work, and would really hate to have to wipe my SSD that has Windows on it in order to turn on Secure Boot. With CSM Support enabled, I always have to use the F12 to get into Boot setup in order to get into Windows. Otherwise it will go to a black screen and tell me to insert a bootable drive. But spamming the F12 button doesn't bother me. The upgrade from MATX to ATX is nice, along with the ARGB headers. Very satisfied with this product and would recommend to anybody! ... show more
