I have been professional bass player for about 50 years now. I have used Fender equipment mostly. I recently purchased an Ibanez 300E bass guitar. I replaced the original strings with Fender Flatwound 50's. Within a week the G string unraveled at the tuner. I got a new string from them. I purchased the same set again. The A string started to twang and would not stay tuned. I returned them here. Got a refund. I purchased these strings. I used to use GHS in the past, and don't know why I stopped. The first difference between the two string sets is that the Fender's E is too deep to hear at times and I have to turn the bass control down. This alters the other strings and the whole set is bland. The GHS are not superbrite and twangy. They are the smoothest deepest all around great sound I have played on this new bass. I think the Fender strings are made for the Fender bass line and nothing else. My Ibanez has a preamp built in. I think this didn't work with the Fender metal. I tried everything to make the Fender strings sound good but could not. The A string would not sound when doing riffs, so it sounded terrible on stage. I put these GHS strings on today, and played them tonight on stage and they were very nice. The deep tones rang out across the fretboard in harmony. No longer was the E too bassy and the G string tinny and A not resonant and the D was nowhere to be heard. So, my conclusion is that Fender strings on Fender Guitars and GHS on the rest of them. I play different genres of music. I play rock, but also play smooth jazz, blues and country. I do not slap, pop or crackle. I just play standard bass in a few bands.     • Thuddy & warm flats in the best possible way...
My main bass is a 60's Eko Barracuda Bass, the Italian makers version of a Gibson EB2, and in the mid 90's I had black nylon tape wound strings put on it. They're still on the bass and probably always will, they sound incredible. These GHS Precision flats have that same wooly, warm tone but there's also some upper mids and highs that aren't present in tape wounds. I put them on my first generation 2008 Squier Classic Vibe Jazz Bass and the bass immediately opened up, sounding richer than the it did with the round wounds that were on it before. My only criticism is these are labeled as long scale yet the low E's silk wraps seemed to start too late up the string, causing the full sized core of the string to start wrapping around the tuning post. The tuners are standard vintage Fender split post/Kluson tuners and even with the '2 tuner spaces down' trimming method the E string seemed too long. No big deal, everything worked out, just doesn't look as clean as it should be. Great strings, well worth the price... ... show more

Warm Sound, Not Bright, Best Bass Strings . I have these GHS Flats on all my (8) basses , medium & long scale. I like a warm bass sound. I'm not a slap bassist .I know how, but not my style . These have that 60's Motown,and Beatles sound. If you're looking for something bright, then these are not for you ! Great lows, nice mids, and accentuated, warm highs . If you back off the bass tone & rev up the treble knobs,& EQ your amp, you can slap,and get the highs.but, basically,the strings have a warm, mellow tone . The strings that do it all ,if you have the right gear ? Tension is low to medium, depending on the bass guitar, and scale of your bass .If you likes real highs, put some round wounds on your second bass . If you only have one bass, These, Are The Strings ! If your a playing a Hofner, you need model 3120 in medium scale 35.5 wind . ... show more

    • Great strings.
I am mainly a guitar player, but I enjoy playing bass as well. I purchased an American standard jazz bass about a year ago, but seldom played it because the factory strings were hard on my hands. Since I've installed the GHS flatwounds I play almost every day. Very smooth. Easy on the hands and frets. One thing I noticed about these strings is that the E string is duller sounding than the other strings. That is, the other strings are very bright in comparison. But, my understanding is that over time the A, D, & G strings calm down to match the E string (hopefully not too much). Also, the E string doesn't fit the tuning machine as well as the others. Only 1 1/2 wraps and I was at the fat part of the string. Not enough lead, too much string? Regardless, these strings allow me to play my bass more, ergo, improving my skills. And that's a good thing. ... show more

This is a solid basic flat wound strings. It’s a great value and plays just like a 1960s flat wound Fender string. Give it a try I think you’ll like it but I’m 70 years old what do I know.

    • Love these strings on my P-Bass...for the moment
Really enjoying these strings on my Fender. Took about a week to break them in. The tone is still bright, slides are silky smooth, but sustain is a degree or two shorter than with the roundwounds I had used before. I think I can live with that in exchange for quieter strings. Not expecting a long life from them as I have noticed a bit of wear at the fret wires in just a month of playing, but I change out strings every 60 days or so. ... show more

Put them on my P bass and I think they were doing exactly what they were supposed to, but just isn't my sound. Way too punchy/thumpy and little sustain. Just put some Fender 9050 fltawounds on and I LOVE them. Lots of growl and my bass sounds alive.
