  • Jury is out, but so far, so good...
Size: 1 Pint
I did a lot of research for a product that was easy to apply, gave a shiny finish, was durable, very waterproof, low odor, and importantly, good for butcher block countertops. This product is definitely all of those. I didn't want to use tung oil as it had been originally done in that. Tung oil is really time consuming and smelly, and I didn't think it wore that well. I ended up putting on about 6 coats of this. The sheen is great, looks very shiny, and I am sure that it would be easy to tone down the shine. It was easy to use, simply prepping with a bit of sandpaper and fine steel wool. I used throwaway foam brushes, and a soft tshirt type cloth, as the label said.I did the first three coats no problem. It dries quite quickly, and you could do a coat in the morning, then one in late afternoon if pressed for time. I did run into problems with the fourth coat. I didn't have much left in the can, but I still did it according to directions. Well, the end result this time was a swirly, mess. Using the cloth, IMO, isn't necessary, as long as you don't over apply with a bristle or foam brush. Anyway, I had to do another coat, but I had to order another small tin, so be careful of what size you order. I should have order the large size for a countertop. Can two arrives, and I apply it after lightly sanding the swirly mess, and this coat looked fine, decided I would not use a cloth to apply. I still thought the counter section that had had the most use could do with another coat. I applied it using quite a lot, and as it dried, it took on a dull quality that looked terrible. I was annoyed, as I should have left well enough alone. My fault perhaps by using too much, and not doing a light sanding. Today I applied the 6th and final coat, after doing a thorough light sanding, light steel wool, and not using too much product. It has a very nice shine now and is finally done. It remains to be seen how it wears, but i can say that water definitely is repelled and completely beads on the surface. I think this product is going to ultimately be much better than using tung oil, and I am hopeful that it will look good for several years. ... show more

  • A good finish but use it quick
Size: 1 Quart
This provides a nice gloss finish, easy to use and easy to clean up. There are problems if you want to use it on cutting boards or something where a knife may penetrate the surface. That is why they changed the can and called it "bowl finish" . I have used this product quite a bit for building food contact items but I don't use on heavily used cutting boards. I have also had problems with this when I don't use it within a short time. I have sealed it up in the can and come back to use it only to find a "rind" on the top. Even when you remove the rind on top the rest of it has thickened up to where it is almost unusable. I have tried using paint thinner to get it to come back to where it was originally but it's never the same. With the price of this stuff, you need to be able to use all of the can!! ... show more

  • Easy to use and great results
Size: 1 Quart
This is a great finish. There was a bit of a learning curve for me however. Not that the piece didn't turn out ok but it required more coats than were necessary. I have learned to spend extra time with the first coat. Keep wiping it on when you see it has absorbed into the wood, primarily end grain. I just keep wiping more on until it stays wet evenly, then do a final wipe to even it out. Leave extra time for the first coat to dry, I do both sides the first time. I sand with 400 between coats and alternate sides, every 3 or 4 hours seems to work of me. If I see a spot that still soaks in I just apply more until all is wet then do a final wipe to even out just like with the first coat. Last coat gets 0000 steel wool instead of sanding. The more you put on the glossier it gets. Last coat is just a thin wipe. I am experimenting with using this as a sealer coat before using oil or wax. The second picture shows a comparison of 2 ELM bowls with 5 coats of SBQT on one ant the other with one coat SBQT/sanded with 400/and wax. The sanding removes all finish on the surface. Using Mahoney's wax. Really like this result. I Think this is a great solution for an open grain wood where you do not want a gloss finish but also do not want just Walnut Oil and wax. This is a very versatile and easy to apply finish that gives great results. ... show more

  • Absolutely love this stuff.
Size: 1 Pint
I've been looking for a good finish to use on food products that won't be cut on (plates, bowls, etc.) and this finish is amazing. It's quite liquidy but it applies easily enough. I didn't know this beforehand but this finish is actually a film finish and builds a decent protective layer in only a few coats. These sushi plates I made have 4 coats on them and they look and feel great. The finish is super smooth. I recommend applying the finish with a sponge brush. I used a rag for the first 2 coats but the outcome was sub-optimal. But after applying with a sponge brush, the subsequent coats were very clean, smooth, and flat. I wouldn't recommend using this on anything that will come in contact with metal (dinner plates, cutting boards, etc.) but rather only project that will be used to serve food or come in contact with wooden utensils. Metal would just tear up the finish and ruin it. ... show more

  • General Finish Salad Bowl Fiinsh
Size: 1 Quart
It’s more difficult to use than the regular General Finish. I use it on bowls, as the can label reflects, but it is hard to prevent runs. Normally I have to apply the finish then sand runs ready for another coat. I’m finding that if you put it on a lathe and slowly turn the bowl by hand using the widest foam brush you can the results come out better. Just remember where you start applying so you don’t go back over already covered areas— you get a messy look from re-brushing into covered areas. ... show more

  • Great product!!
Size: 1 Quart
My husband and I have owned our antiques store for 35 years. He refinished furniture....and lots of wooden bowls. This particular finish is a constant for his restoration of items that may hold food. He can't get along without it!! Our own bowls are finished with this product and we eat salad with dressing, etc right out of it. Highly recommend. Just wash (don't soak) with your dish water and it's ready to store until it's used again. ... show more
