I've used many General Finishes products for various furniture items as well as a project that involved refinishing my staircase and have been very impressed with the results, especially given the fact I don't know what I'm doing and learn everything from the GF videos on their website and YouTube channel. Anyway, I used the graphite wood dye for an "off-label" use - restoring the color to my photobleached landscaping boulders in my backyard. I have about 30 large boulders the size of small boulders that receive direct sunlight for most of the day and over the years have almost bleached out to a very light gray tone. I wanted to restore some of the original darker color and add some more depth to the boulders and thought the General Finishes Wood Stain in Graphite might work - and it worked brilliantly! I'm very happy with the result and delighted with this product.

Produces a slate grey but with warm brown gaining and undertones

Every General Finishes product I've used is top quality and this is no exception. It produces a slate grey but with warm brown gaining and undertones. This particular stain is highly pigmented (sort of has to be as it is dark grey) almost like a thin milk paint. I've had good luck putting it oak, hickory and ash without a pre-conditioner. However, on cherry, maple, and poplar It will come out very blotchy without a pre-conditioner (I use 1/3 to 1/2# cut of shellac). Also, like most water based stains, it has a fairly short working time. When staining larger pieces it will need some Extender (General Finishes also makes) added to increase the working time.

Excellent Stain and Absorbsion on Hard Maple and Birch

Easy to apply, great color saturation

I’m a six year woodworker who has basic experience with stains/wood colorant. I’ve used the “big box” water based and oil based stains before, with mediocre results. This General Finishes Wood Stain is far superior when applied with a foam brush applicator. The color saturation is fantastic. It dry really quickly, so you have to pay close attention when working on large pieces. This is an Alder noodle board I sanded to 150 grit. The key is to use the foam brush - I used a rag the first time around and it was much less affective.

Disappointed with G.F.

Bought this graphite water base stain 4/28/25 removed clips and opened can 9/17/25, found a black rubbery mass surrounded in a beige liquid. G.F. apparently no longer has a customer service phone # and passed return time with amazon. Be careful with this one. Also, the walnut stain just black die. hope its GF water-based products that are just failing. I still love the seal a cell, and armour seal. Maybe I'll try the oil-based stains. Water based are TERIBLE.

Another Great Product From General Finishes

Pretty good, but…

I like this stain but there’s 2 things to know before buying it. 1. It is a “heavy stain” meaning it covers much of the wood grain. It almost resembles paint it’s so thick. But, the color is rich and uniform so that’s very nice. And 2. It dries EXTREMELY quick, so you need to work in small sections frequently wiping as you go.
