  • Love this generator
Powerful, does all that I want, easy to start. I wired up a transfer switch and all I have to do is hook up to my house and turn it all on. Have my 3 ton ac unit on it, a fridge/freezer and lights and fans for all my rooms. With everything on including freezer and fridge door open and ac cranked down low, I was only drawing about 4000 watts so less than 50% load which was my target. I do have a hard start kit on my air compressor that helps a ton too. Before I installed that, it would briefly bog the unit down when it kicked on ... show more

  • Buyer Beware
I saw all of the good reviews of this generator and jumped on buying it. I have had it for about a month and today was the first day. I tried to start it, and it would not turn on. The motor won’t even start. We even tried to jump the battery and that started it and it ran for about 10 minutes, but after that, it would not start again. I am going to try charging it overnight and then if that doesn’t work, I will replace the battery. If that still doesn’t work, I am going to try and figure out how to return it. I see that everyone that has left a low remark about this product has had similar issues. so my recommendation is to stay away from this generator. I would lean more towards a Honda. I feel like I may have wasted my time and money. So far it’s a 250 pound paperweight. ... show more

  • Works well after you figure out how to put it together
The generator works fine. The push button start is very easy. My only gripe is the instructions. Very limited for an expensive portable generator from a reputable company. I had to refer to the picture many times to understand what the instructions were telling me to do. I had trouble removing the gas cap since I did not know it can open by twisting either way. Most gas caps twist in one direction only. Bottom line. A good generator that could use better instructions for assembly… ... show more

  • Excellent generator
Product works great. Make sure battery is fully charged for the generator to start properly

  • Works great!
We were a little hesitant to buy this particular generator because it had so few reviews compared to other generators, but we are happy we did. We hooked it up to our house and tested it, and it works great! Plenty of electricity to power our home if the power goes out. The only downside is that the battery it comes with doesn't seem to supply enough power to use the electric start. We even charged the battery for 12 hours and tried it again, but it still wouldn't start using the electric start. However, it has started with the pull-start fairly quickly each time I've tried it. So other than the battery, we are quite happy with this generator. ... show more

  • First time, of use.
I bought this two years ago and this is the first time I had to use it. I put the oil in right after purchasing it two years ago and it sat until now. The battery was charge already so I put gas in it and it started right up. Nice to know I can count on it when needed.

  • Does not work as shipped, Generac is absolutely no help in resolving the issue.
Generator looks sharp, but does not start after assembly. Generac's customer service line is absolutely no help - I have to take it to an independent servicer (getting the 250 lb thing there is my non-trivial problem), wait and then pay for repairs, then hope Generac will deign to cover the repairs under warranty. I'm stuck with this thing, so I'm going to try and make it work, but I'll be telling everyone I know to never buy a Generac product for the rest of my life. ... show more

  • They put a car engine in this thing! Final update, Rating adjusted
I love this generac generator, it puts out a lot of power, it's easy to start, it's fuel injected so it runs smoother and more reliably, but there are some cons to this generator and they go as follows: Pros: Lots of power, easy to start using a key ignition, it's fuel injected so it's definitely more fuel efficient than a traditional carbureted generator, it puts out clean power compared directly to the carbureted model that's similar, it responds to power demand quickly and smoothly. Cons: it's really loud same noise output as a carbureted model, it weighs 260 Lbs dry, 300 Lbs with a full fuel tank so you won't be loading and unloading this generator by yourself. Overall it's what I would expect from a large generator ***Update 3/9/23*** The generator is continuing to operate absolutely flawlessly, I have owned this generator for about a year now, I have not experienced this " parasitic electric draw during storage" or " failure to start" or have other electrical starting issues. Mine came with a perfect battery right out of the gate, and I follow the storage and maintenance instructions, I'm noticing that a lot of the negative reviews about the generator not wanting to start, are because they are not reading the owner's manual which tells you that if you're going to store this generator for longer than a few days without running it then you should keep the electric battery charger plugged into the front of the generator to both maintain the battery and the electrical systems of the generator. It includes a charger for this purpose. Anyway, I have experienced absolutely zero issues with this generator, it's on running hour 935. ***UPDATE7/11/23*** Running hour 1597.6, still no problems, replaced the spark plug for the first time, this wasn't necessary, as the plug was still good, but an ounce of preventative maintenance is worth a pound of longevity. Left the generator off the battery maintainer for over 3 months while it was in storage, and when I pulled it out, and gassed it up, with a couple of primes to get the gas flowing, it started right up. Generac must have made some defective units as I still have yet to experience this parasitic electrical draw that others describe, these must be older units, as the reviews are older, so I think Generac fixed the issue with the current model. Go Generac, Thanks for the workhorse powerhouse! ***UPDATE 12/3/23*** I haven't had to use this generator for my company much, and my bud who's off gridding, just had his generator quit, so I let him barrow this machine, and with making him provide receipts to prove maintenance of my unit like oil changes, filter cleanings, and occasional fuel injector cleaning like Gumm-out added to the tank, he just purchased a much larger generator for his tiny home, and gave this unit back to me. He used this as his main power source for almost 6 months while he saved up to purchase a new unit and batteries and solar panels. It has well over 6000 hours on it now, AND IT STILL STARTS AND OPERATES LIKE NEW. GENERAC PUT A MINI CAR ENGINE IN THIS THING. My bud told me just how reliable this thing was for him and told me he is now forever sold on Generac! Like I said before about maintenance and following the owners manual, and an ounce of preventative maintenance is worth a pound of longevity, but also Generac for making a generator so powerful and also so reliable and so well built, it handled the Arizona summer (in the middle of the desert) like a beast. If you need a generator for your Constuction site, or you use a generator often for your work or recreation, or if your an off-gridder and need that absolute can-not-fail-you generator that puts your mind at ease to own and operate, buy this one. @8KW it's enough to do just about anything. I still can't say this enough. THANK YOU! ***Update: 6/30/24*** The generator started to give me issues and not run correctly, it began to stall under load, and then wouldn't want to start and stay running. Went through a whole myriad of things, took it apart and checked different components, I finally nailed down the issue, it is a fuel injected generator, and the fuel injector like any other car or motorcycle or fuel injected engine in general has a fuel injector with tiny little jets, three out of the four jets have a grain of sand in them and will not spray correctly. This is no fault of Generac. They do provide a fuel screen and a fuel filter, but somehow or another some dirt got through. Like I mentioned, this is not generac's fault at all. It's all in the environment where I live, out in the Phoenix Metro you can expect to get sand in everything. Although this generator is not currently running, it is a simple fix to get it running. I will update this review again when I either unclog the fuel injector or get a new one. ***UPDATE 10/31/24*** Replaced the fuel injector, it worked for about 2 weeks before I ran into the same issue, now it looks like it's the engine computer, it won't start or run with either the electric start or the pull start. Rating reduced to 1 star as generac is not living up to it's warranty, it still has 9 months of its warranty left, the issue I'm having is that no one that takes generac's warranty as payment works on fuel injected engines and those that work on fuel injected engines wont take generac's warranty as payment, and generac is dancing around and not calling me back, it's been 3 months since I started the warranty claim and still I get ignored, no one in the appeals and grievances department is EVER available to talk to. Very disappointed with generac's handling of the situation. I also own a WEN brand generator, and they gave me no issues sending me a new unit when it started malfunctioning; like I called in and told them what's going on, and they said, "oh that's not supposed to happen, what's your amazon order number and serial number so we can warranty you out a new unit". and in less than a week I had the replacement at my door. This is unacceptable generac. Replace my broken unit and I will update my review of this unit to reflect your decision, but as of now I already think I know what your decision is, it would just be nice for you to actually tell me no, not drag it out until my warranty is expired just so you have an excuse to not send me a new unit. Shame on you generac! ***UPDATE 12/30/24*** Generac finally put me through to a supervisor of the appeals and grievances department and he handled the whole situation. we agreed that is was better to replace it with a unit that can be serviced in the local area, and send me the carbureted engine version of this generator, and it is excessively consuming motor oil and even locked up once, and it isn't even at 500 operating hours (4/15/2025) (and here we go again with appeals and grevences, at least this time they are trying to make it right this time with no need for a supervisor. overal the XT8500EFI had about 8000 operating hours on it when it really started to have issues, but once it started to have issues, IT REALLY HAD MAJOR ISSUES. 3.5 out of 5 ... show more
