  • Quality, must have bits for BMW and other European automotive repair and maintenence
Style: Case & Tools
This has every Torx, Allen external hex, and E-Torx bit size one needs for BMW repair and maintenence, plus probably other German and European makes. You probably need to couple this with the GearWrench four-pack E-Torx double closed end ratcheting wrenches (8 sizes in four wrenches) as well due to BMW's often inconvenient use of E-Torx headed fasteners' heads facing into cramped quarters and obstructions. You could use a 12 point standard fixed or preferably ratcheting wrench but risk rounding off the Torx heads in the process, and then you'll be in a world of poo, so I recommend that set with this (I bought one set at a time but wish I had bought both together for immediate use). This socket set includes the smallest sizes needed for automotive and other repair through the necessary big T-60 Torx bit one needs to release the tension of the accessory belt for tensioner, idler pulley, and belt replacement. It also includes the large Allen external hex sockets you need for the oil fill and drain plugs for the differentials, transmission, transfer case, etc. The quality is solid, with clean etchings indicating size (though a small font that requires occasional eye strain alleviated by the matching markings in the blow-molded case), and excellent fastener head engagement. I already recently used an array of these small to large E-Torx, Torx, and mainly large Allen hex bits in my recent BMW extensive maintenence activities. Coupled with GearWrench ratcheting standard hex and E-Torx wrenches, Milwaukee standard hex sockets and ratchets and breaker bar (for the belt tensioner), my buddy and I in my garage did all the fluids, oil filter housing gasket, differentials, transfer case, belts and pulleys, you name it, on two N55-engined E-chassis Bimmers. These sockets coupled with the aforementioned ratcheting E-Torx wrenches were indispensable for these jobs. Recommended especially because it keeps the array of your atypical non-hex sockets all in one place in a neat case beside your existing cases of standard ratchets and hex sockets and extensions/adapters and doesn't require you to run out and purchase an oddball size that isn't included, doesn't match an existing set, and requires storage elsewhere. If you want every quality non-hex socket bit you need for your Bimmer or similar all in one place, this is the way to go! A single GearWrench T60 for the tensioner release is 12 bucks. This is clearly a great value relative to a bunch of rails or individual bits bought separately over time. Worth the investment, and I was happy to donate or cheaply sell all the nonmatching, diversely-stored oddballs once I got this. I may have kept the spares if I had the space, which I don't -- must reduce clutter and maintain organization. ... show more

  • Sometimes, you'll get the same quality with a different label, for less
Style: Tools + Case
I'll start with Danaher. Now, Danaher makes Matco Tools, Armstrong, Silver Eagle, Kobalt, Craftsman, NAPA, Allen, Gear Wrench, and K-D Tools. I’m actually not sure if they are called Danaher anymore, they may be called Apex Group, or split in two forming Danaher and Apex but regardless, they’re all under the same umbrella, which is why you’ll find many similarities between these products if you look closely. Now before we get crazy and say that Kobalt is just as good as Armstrong, we must understand this does not mean they’re all of the exact same quality, or even made in the same place. Some of Matco and Armstrong tools are finer than craftsman or kobalt, by a considerable amount. Just know the battle between Kobalt, craftsman and gearwrench, Sometimes, can be a bit silly. But sometimes..... its not. So let’s break it down like this, Danaher owns the following: Matco Tools = very high end Armstrong = industrial high end Silver eagle = industrial Kobalt/Craftsman/Napa/Allen/Gearwrench/K-D = home, hobby, otherwise light use. Starting with silver eagle, you’ll begin to find more Taiwan/China made products, though they are still tough and respectable as far as usable tools go. Sometimes, you’ll find name brands at the bottom of this list can float into the industrial side of the world in quality, I see this often with Napa. Quality and features in the bottom list seems to always be floating around, keeping the market busy and tool sales up from people who don’t use or need tools every day with an attempt to spark interest. And on occasion, some of the great quality at the top of the list will trickle down to some of the lower end brands because of some bulk materials or other various reasons. So let me get to the actual product being review here. First off the ratchets in this kit. They’ve put out a pretty decent tool at a fair price here. The internals of these ratchets you’ll find to be quite similar to the craftsman low profile ratchet #44995, which is a fantastic ratchet by the way. This gearwrench brand simply has 84 teeth instead of the 60 the craftsman had. The gearwrench is also not a quick release design which makes this ratchet stronger than the #44995. And I feel they have not overdone the tooth count either. I’ve pulled a great deal of torque on this ratchet with confidence and the clicking sounds very positive. These ratchets are far superior to the run of the mill craftsman. If you ask me, I’d say these gearwrench 84 tooth ratchets are a hybrid of the craftsman low-profile and the craftsman premium 84 tooth ratchet. Both great tools. The thumb ratchet in this kit has the exact same head with a shorter handle. The sockets are great, STAMPED with sizes on two sides of each socket which is great for finding the one you need, and wont wear off like this "laser etched" crap. The fit and finish of these are pretty good too. Just this morning I abused the 1/2” deep socket with a breaker bar + 3ft cheater with no issues, which is what sparked me to write the review. But, like any brand, including the high end, they will break if you push them hard enough, I have yet to see adamantium sockets on the market. You’ll find the Napa labeled sockets to be very similar to gearwrenches. Give this kit a go. These tools should last a long time. ... show more
