Top Amazon Reviews

  • Great value and no potato chip crunching sound! Yay!
For all you review readers and over-analyzers scared to pull the trigger on purchasing an insulated self-inflating sleeping pad, listen up! I'M JUST LIKE YOU! But so far this has been a great purchase. Here's what I mean. Reading through the dozens of self-inflating/insulated sleeping pads on the Amazon Marketplace, you'll see that most are outstanding products. Some are a little heavy for backpacking (which is my primary use) and yet others are way outside of my price range as they are ultralight products that would only be valuable to someone who is thru-hiking or obsessed with eliminating every single ounce of added weight from their back. I, on the other hand, wanted something that was lighter than my current pad that has the built-in baffle for you to stomp on and inflate the pad. I haven't taken this one on the trail yet, but as you'll see in the pictures I followed a few recommendations from other people that purchased this Gear Doctor pad. First, you'll see that the product packs very small. My Hydro Flask is 32 oz. and in a side-by-side comparison of the height, the pad is only inches taller than my water bottle. I will say that the diameter of the sleeping pad is a bit more than my Hydro Flask, but that's to be expected. In the second picture, you'll see the pad unpacked and laying on my carpet. I've opened the valve (conveniently located on the side of the pad, not on the top) and let it naturally aspirate air. Even after leaving it like this for five hours, it still had these folds in it. I closed the valve and gave it a try. It was uncomfortable and when I rolled on my side (I'm a side-sleeper) not only did it sound like a bag of potato chips being squished, I could feel my floor on my hips, shoulders, and knees. Not good! After watching a few videos with tips and tricks to making this pad more comfortable, the simplest tip was to put two full breaths of air into it, close the valve, and viola, a firm and very quiet sleeping pad! So, when I take it on the trail this October, I'll be sure to update my review with in-the-field test results. One last tip I'll share with you; do not store this pad rolled up in the gear bag. The internal insulation and baffles work best when you store it unrolled with the valve wide open. I'm storing it under my king size bed right next to my Kelty 20 degree down sleeping bag, which also has to be stored flat. This was a great value and on sale for under $35 with tax compared to the Thermo-rest models that can be upwards of $250! Save your money on your pad and invest in a well-fitting backpack. Update after my 27 mile 3 day hike: As expected, this pad worked better than expected. I wasn't cold and I couldn't feel the ground under my tent. I was very pleased with the performance but I'll give you a little tip on inflating it. If you're a side sleeper like me, don't over-inflate it too much. I blew a lot of air into it to make it super firm. Doing so was uncomfortable when I slept on my side. I strongly suggest that you only add two full breaths of air into it, then lock it in. That will provide you plenty of cushion for your hips. ... show more

  • Great mat - happy with the purchase
Great sleeping pad - so far only used it twice, but it was inflating fast, only needed few extra breaths to make it fully inflated. I slept well on it, and it was holding air for the whole night.

  • Wow. Is it really this good to be true? 🤔 Yep
UPDATE: So after a couple nights sleeping on this, it started to slowly deflate. To my amazement, I put in for a replacement mid day Saturday; a new one arrived by 5pm Sunday! Yee haa. Didn’t expect that. So. Back at it again, see what happens. I really want to like this pad. Also, owner did respond very quickly to my email (as mentioned in review). I will wait until my next update to talk about the responses. I will say this though: he did confirm they will be seeking ASTM lab test toward the end of the year, beginning of new year! So that’s good news! Original Review: OK, so this review is a tad premature, but initial impressions are high. 4 stars for now. I will need to revise down the road after putting it through a lengthy trial period. Technically, the instructions say to inflate and let it sit for 24 hours. Quite honestly, this particular unit seemed good to go right out of the sack. I followed the instructions to inflate it, and added several breaths, which was necessary to fully inflate. I did let it sit for a few hours. It seemed ready to me. The form looked good and even all around, and the insulation/cushion factor seemed evenly distributed. So I decided to try it out. I placed this on top of my Klymit Static V and slept on it last night. I swear, this particular set up was just like sleeping in my bed. I got the best sleep last night, it was unreal. I’m 5‘8“, running a little overweight at about 185 lbs; that extra above BMI (what should be 145ish) is in the gut 😞🙄. One of these days… I also gave it a short trial by itself, and one trial combined with a Walmart version of a closed cell foam pad underneath. The latter was just a tad more comfortable. I believe, in a pinch, I could get by with either scenario if I needed to. And that’s mainly do to my hips. It’s tough staying young. Pushing 60. Instructions say to allow it to fill for three minutes and then to top off with a few breaths as necessary. This thing blows up easy; it deflates easy. Follow the instructions and it works. Granted, it’s a little bulky, and considered a bit heavy, but for wild camping, it will fit the bill. In fact, this morning I broke both pads down, and simply rolled them together in one long roll and closed the caps. I put the straps around both. Quite honestly this would sit right on top or bottom of a rucksack nicely, and make for a quick break down in the need to vacate camp in a hurry. My reservations are: True R-value, and complaints about huge, weird bubble pockets forming out of the blue. However it does carry a lifetime warranty, sooo… I sent an email to the company Inquiring about their R-value as it is not an ASTM rating. Although I’ve read many reviews which confirm warm sleeping, I also watched one particular YouTuber who did an over nighter on snow at 18F and said it was amazing. If the R-value is true, combined with a Static V which is at R-1.3, I’m good down to 0°F. If I add the Walmart closed cell foam which is rated R2, I’m done. This set up will go down to -25°F. And it will do it at a fraction of the cost of more expensive routes, howbeit at a touch more bulk in the process. But, if budget is the goal, this system is looking promising. I have access to incredible comfort down to R-7.6 for roughly $120 (total) investment. I have a feeling the R-value is probably accurate or fairly close based on other reviews; my only hope is that I don’t end up with the weird bubble situation. Time will tell. I will definitely update down the road after extended use. Oh, one more thing: Instructions say to unroll and fill with air and leave the cap open, and to store underneath a bed, behind the couch, etc. for extended periods of storage. Well, that was another question I inserted into my email, because I don’t have the luxury of that kind of space for long-term storage. So I’m waiting to hear back on how critical this is. It does have a memory for long term shape, so this is the reason. I’m thinking leave it stored in a roll, and break it out once a month or every couple of months and let it sit for a day (?). So far, very impressed for the bang for buck, with a supposed “no hassle” life time warranty. I recently spent over $800 to a garage for a fuel pump replacement in an older car. The pump alone was over $500! It only had a 90 day warranty… 😐. Value is subject to all perimeters! ... show more

  • Great Camping Mat!
Worked great for our young Son who is 4 feet tall and 70 pounds. He slept on the ground in a tent on this and did great. It's firm enough to keep you comfortable. I found this mat easy to put together and pack up. Travels well. It is also fairly easy to inflate as well. Didn't leak at all. Would use this for more than camping! ... show more

  • Great budget self inflate foam pad.
A great self inflated foam pad. The nice thing about this is the compactness being foam. I'm a die hard side sleeper and this thing was not too bad if you are needing a budget hiking pad. For car camping I wanted a little more padding. I would recommend for hiking/backpacking camping. The low profile is nice for a smaller tent setup. Self inflate was quick but definitely let it inflate a bit before you go out for Max comfort. Setup and tear down was a breeze. ... show more
