  • It is time to cut the cable.
Style: Standard
I live in a suburb quite far from the city and many of the broadcast station antennas. I purchased the GE 29884 antenna a couple of weeks ago from Amazon. Along with the antenna, I purchased a PCT 4 Port Cable TV/HDTV/Internet amplifier (model PCT-MA2-4P) just in case I need it. I have been trying to "cut the cable" and stop paying expensive cable TV fees for even local basic television stations. In addition to the fees, my cable company switched to a system requiring cable TV boxes that you rent from them for $6/month per box. I have tried other powered indoor antennas and have had miserable experiences with them. Few channels could be scanned and the picture quality was dismal, or heavily pixelated, especially in the daytime hours. The few stations that I could pick up were often unwatchable. So back to cable I went. I decided to try the GE 29884 antenna based on the reviews I read on Amazon. The antenna comes in a fairly small box labelled as Pro Outdoor/Attic Mount Antenna. The installation booklet is small with tiny "mice" type. So you might need to scan in the booklet in order to be able to zoom in on the text and illustrations. All the parts are nicely packaged and are easily identified in the instruction manual. A count of each part type is also given, Prior to installation it helps to layout all the parts including the nuts and screws, the reflector rods, dipole antenna parts, main mast, mounting parts, etc. The installation can be a bit tricky, if you follow the manual. However is you do a search on "GE 29884 antenna assembly", YouTube videos can be found that simplify the assembly process a great deal. It took me about a half an hour to assemble the antenna. One nice thing is that rubber end caps were provided to cap off the dipole rods. The antenna definitely seems to be a quality product. I mounted the antenna in the attic, as high as possible using the provided J-mount mounting hardware and supplied M5 bolts and nuts. I disconnected the coaxial cable from the cable TV provider, and connected it to the antenna's connector located on the main mast. Using a bedroom TV, I then selected "antenna" as the input, and performed a channel scan. A total of 106 channels scanned. Most were crystal clear. Perhaps 3 or 4 were pixelated. Sure many of the channels are trash or of no interest to me (shopping channels, religious, languages I don't speak, etc) but many great channels came in beautifully including all the local channels and sub-channels, movie channels, retro, public, etc. A few audio-only channels were picked up. And I didn't have the amplifier connected. I did wire up the amplifier simply because a signal splitter attenuates the signal from the antenna as you feed the signal to multiple TVs. The 4-port amplifier boosts the signal going to each TV. So far, I've had the antenna for a week and I have not been disappointed. All I can say is "bye bye cable TV company". It is time to cut the cable. The antenna and amplifier will pay for itself in a month or two. Update: 6 weeks later: This antenna works like a charm. I have cut the cord, get no more monthly cable bills, and could not be happier. ... show more

  • Price fair, yes it's plastic but works, it is a directional type
Style: Standard
I bought this antenna as a see if I can. My area has ota channel before the switch over and we lost everything one. As years have go by we paid the cable company for our local channels. It's is mounted outside. My RF are both Low and Hi , VHF ,UHF I live in area of air mileage of 45 miles to the local tv towers but I'm near a state line and the other state is about the same but different direction. I was able to receive my major local station and a couple from the other state and from an area far south in which is the direction I have it pointed to. Signal has been holding well and clear pictures I bought a $$$ one of Clearstream to compare with this one exceeded that one at $160. Oh and this all still works as it did take a tumble from 2 story home. ... show more

  • Solid performance from attic mount under a concrete tile roof at 35 mile distance to transmitters
Style: Yagi
We have four transmission towers spread across two degrees of bearing at 35 miles. We got tired of paying for cable, but my wife prohibited external roof aerials. Concrete tile roof with maximum of five vertical feet in the attic. And it's Florida, with all the thunderstorms throughout the year. We needed a simple, proven design that was easy to dial in. We got everything we wanted, better than expected. Assembly instructions aren't the greatest, leaving me feeling a bit like the "1960's dad" fitting the pieces together, but in truth it's a very easy assembly. This is good, because I needed to fit the last few pieces together in the attic, awkardly contorting around roof trusses as I did so. Cursed a lot, but it worked out fine. We used a high quality three-way coax signal splitter (helpfully abandoned in place by the cable company) with an advertised 5.5dB signal loss per channel. At each TV, I preemptively added an inexpensive Winegard 100 LNA (5v USB power), also purchased on Amazon. Minimum success required receiving the major air channels with no discernable reduction in quality, including during storms. Actual achieved results were far better than that. We're not seeing any pixelation effects, which my wife commented was much better than the signal we had on the same channels beforehand using cable. This statement includes the dozens of lower-powered channels that share the same transmission towers. We're very pleased with the performance. One more note - I used a King SL1000 Surelock Digital TV Signal Finder to dial in the antenna bearing. It takes a light hand and a good bit of tedious practice to get useful results. So be patient and expect a lot of trial and error. Also keep in mind that magnetic flux gate bearings (like on your basic phone compass) are not going to be the same as true bearings, so be conscious of your measurement source compared to your target bearing. Unless you're an experienced sailor or airman, which I am neither, you almost need to write this caution on the back of your hand before you start dialing in the direction from up in the attic. Be patient and keep with it til you get what you want. ... show more
