  • Works great and easy to install
We don't live that far from the DTV towers - even a paper clip will pick up some DTV, but we use Roku and wanted something that did not require switching the TV into OTA mode when we wanted to watch the local news. So we purchased an AirTV box that works in (free) Sling, mounted the antenna in the attic, fished RG-6 between the walls to the basement closet where the AirTV box is plugged into one of the Nighthawk routers (distributed network using FreshTomato) and, voilà, local news at dinner time. The antenna quality is very good and it was easily mounted to the rafters and aimed at the towers. Attic placement is great since no weathering. And we picked up all the area channels, which is good since sometimes the local news is broadcast on a secondary channel when the primary is playing sports. ... show more

This Attic Antenna is deceptively small and not comprised of very sturdy assembly parts, you wouldn't want it out of doors, but wow, what a difference it has made for me. I live in Waterbury CT on the side of a hill that faces Hartford but there are hills in between that are higher than mine. I'm also 30 some odd miles away. I was using a cheap platic square sheet antenna which, only in the Winter, would work (trees on properly) and would on rare occasions get in all the stations that this one gets, but would be choppy, in and out and many times not come in at all. On top of that, my TV tuning software doesn't store channels, every time you move the antenna, you have to totally rescan and the previous scan's channels are loost, it's a TLC TV. A bit of a hassle. I used my cell phone and an antenna app for aiming and assembled this antenna, and hooked it with my existing el cheapo amp and wow. The Hartford stations come in when aimed at this, with 4 or 5 stars on my TV signal power, and the New Haven and other closer stations come in when aimed for Hartford also, I get CBS, NBC, FOX, ABC, PBS and two others. I haven't played with aiming it at NYC yet though I doubt it will work, but my oh my what an improvement over the cheap plastic square Window Antenna. Only wish it was a sturdier design, it comes in a very small box and you assemble everything, there are more parts than you might expect from the photos. I'm very pleased, even if, so far, I don't get in far away Boston. It's been a few days now and the signal is still strong and stations not in the patch do come in enough for me to be quite usable. The plastic side arms that hold the reflector bars and VHF loop are in 4 pieces, 2 pieces for each side and that is what I think is the most flimsy part, how they snap together, and why I would not put this outside. But it's perfectly adequate for an attic and the mounting L-Bar will rotate 90 degrees for side long mounting and comes with wood screws. The TINY TINY screws that mount the UHF Loops and the nuts and washers for the VHF loop are another flimsy aspect, 4 of them don't use nuts but self thread in the plastic nose of the assembly. I will say that, regardless of the flimsy nature of this, comparing this to one of those plastic sheet antennas is night and day difference and even in a living room you might be able to hide this well enough to use it, even though it isn't big it's quite effective. AS I say, I live where hills are in the way and I get in good signals. If no signal is there, of course, nothing will work, but don't give up if you are using rabbit ears or a little pastic square antenna and things are too edgy, now, of course, this won't do what a better outdoor antenna would do, but the price is so affordable and the performance is so good this is probably something I recommend even more than things I have given great ratings before. I am very pleased. I will check in once I get a way to try other directions to see what else I can pull in, but right now I get enough to be darned happy, but don't have expectations of Boston or NYC, if I DO ever pull those in then I'll be sure to tell you! ... show more

  • Seems pretty cheap....
Very disappointed in this product. When it arrived it was in a plastic bag; all small bolts (hardware) were loose in the large bag. Two of the antenna arms were bent, one of the support (plastic arcs that hold the straight antenna pieces) was broken. Could not download the instruction icon in the direction package and the directions themselves where absolutely ridiculous. Do to the need I am going to use it, more info to follow once hooked up. Who knows, perhaps it will work! After installation and use, I have to admit that it does work quite well. I was having difficulties receiving channel 5 with old antenna, this one gets reception quite well. I am changing my numerical review from a 1 to a 4; All parts were in package even though it had been opened, and reception is quite good. ... show more

  • Perfect attic-mount and performance. Perfect attic-mount and performance.
This product is fantastic. Like others indicated it assembles in about 15 minutes and installs about the same. Full disclosure it has been installed for less than 24 hours. I've not not a single drop in coverage other than from the NBC affiliate, which is 180-degrees from the pointed location. Everything has been rock solid and since we are in a cold snap I only expect improved performance in our normal warmer climate. I am in an area surrounded by dense foilage so RF performance is somewhat expected to be limited and I am pulling an average signal of 72 for all stations on a TiVo Bolt Tuner. I connected direct to my Panasonic Plasma, this has a slightly better tuner than TiVo Bolt, and my signal was in the low 80's for all the same networks. All told I received 52 digital channels. I will update the review once I get though all the weather out here I am interested to see if it holds up on rain fade under severe spring storms. Installation was quick and I was able to mount near the peak of my attic for approximately 18' - 21' above ground. The higher the better for an antenna. This design (multi dipoles) has been around since the 50's at least, RF hasn't changed other than what it carries, so the old school tech is probably still the best. I am no newbie to antennas, RF or HDTV. I received my first HD OTA signals in Loveland, CO from Denver, CO in 1999, that was about 56 miles away. I have since relocated to East Texas and I have grown yet again weary of the value from cable television. I needed a new antenna and first tried the generic RCA UHF loop indoor, since my transmitters are 12-21 miles away. I got 2 of the 4 majors and a bunch of shopping channels. It was about the same with the leaf-type antenna. Then I moved to a fan favorite with the model HD-8008, more channels, all majors yet horridly reliable reception with the included amplifier and without. My TiVo Bolt recordings were subject to much interference (pixilation) and drops in programming coverage. EDIT 1/6/18: This has been installed for a week now and I still have no signal fade issues! In checking signal levels at multiple times of day I remain at the same levels. I've watched recordings made to TiVo and still have no drops or blips in picture or audio. The images from OTA amaze me to this day, so are so crisp! EDIT 1/21/18: We had a cold snap and some precipitation which made some programs unwatchable. Blips and drops. I ordered the CM-7777 amp/filter, tuned and scanned. I picked up another dozen channels mostly shopping ones but, my signal is locked at 72 pretty much across the board. I though my picture was clean before, wow, the CM-7777 really cleaned it up, it’s like the actors and actresses are in the room with you visually. I made some tweaks to mounting in the previous couple of weeks without much effect. The pair of products is amazing, and they each can stand one their own. ... show more

  • The best of several indoor antennas I have tested... by far. Highly recommended
After renewed interest in receiving off-air TV to my two big screen TVs, and after acquiring some small portable internal battery powered TVs, I decided to buy and test a number of indoor antennas in the $25 to $50 price range. My location is in the SF Bay area, with a slightly (but not much) obstructed line of sight to the TV transmitting towers across the SF Bay in San Francisco on Sutro Tower and Mt. San Bruno, which are about 15 miles away. I'm at elevation 280 ft., which further works to my advantage. With most of the inexpensive indoor antennas I bought, I could not get VHF channels 4 and/or 7 reliably. With this antenna (which has an element for receiving hi band VHF) mounted in my attic, I could receive ALL VHF channels solidly. This even with an un-amplified splitter dividing the signal in the attic to two cables going to my living room and bedroom. And EVEN in the living room when th signal was again split with an unamplified splitter between my TV's antenna input and a DVR antenna input. The assembly instructions were a little tricky at one point, but with assistance from the pictures of the assembled antenna here on Amazon, I was able to quickly and properly assemble and mount it in my attic. The "snap in metal tube into plastic supports" does look a little flimsy and cheap, but it IS in my experience with it more than adequate for an antenna mounted totally protected indoors in an attic. Note this antenna is not intended for outdoor use, nor would it survive very long if mounted outdoors! I'm extremely pleased with the performance of this directional antenna. Note that all directional TV antennas do pretty well with UHF band (14 - 69) channels, but many don't support VHF channels well, especially the low band channels 2 - 7. This one, in my experience, uniquely among inexpensive indoor directional antennas I've tested here, does. I HIGHLY recommend this antenna as a bargain item that gives excellent perfomance. But of course, your experience will vary... everyone's experience with a given antenna will be different...depending on your location and the location of the TV transmitting towers you are trying to get a signal from! Still, in this price range, for an indoor directional antenna... I highly recommend you try this one first. ... show more

  • Great at UHF, awful for VHF channels
Assembly wasn't bad, but a little cumbersome and aluminum/plastic pieces seem a bit wimpy. If not careful in assembly, the bars could definitely bend. Since it is intended for attic mounting, probably would hold up fine. Mounting screws were very cheap and the screwheads stripped, which caused us to have to use a hacksaw to remove it when we replaced it with the far superior RCA Yagi we bought next. Reception on UHF channels was fantastic which is the reason I'm giving it 3 stars - in fact if I could rate this on separate points, the UHF reception is a solid 4.5 stars. Range is a little shorter than the ClearStream4, but for the price on this one (under 25 dollars for me) it is great value over the ClearStream. Received 45+ stations from all directions, everything we were getting on the ClearStream4 except 1 channel that is 60mi away, right at the edge of this GE antenna's range. The problem is with the VHF reception and I'd give it only 1 star, maybe 0. We live about 20mi from a tower that broadcasts our local ABC affiliate WMUR on VHF frequency 186MHz. This antenna claims to have a 60mi range. We pointed it directly at the tower, we tried with & without pre-amp, we moved it up/down/left/right turned around upside down & did a jig, we even tried putting foil on the reflectors and foil directly touching the VHF loop antenna. It was unable to receive even a flicker of the station. By contrast, the RCA Yagi style vhf/uhf antenna we bought instead of this one picked up the target station easily without a pre-amp. And, amazingly, this antenna could not get our local PBS affiliate on channel 11, which is also a VHF station, but we have been getting that channel on our ClearStream4 which is supposedly a UHF only antenna!. So, this GE VHF/UHF antenna received fewer stations than a UHF only ClearStream4 - weird huh? Definitely made me consider if it was just completely defective, thus we returned it. So, if you don't need a VHF station, this is a great value antenna to put in your attic. It isn't a pretty looking thing to put right in your living room. But at least in our area it was failure at VHF compared to the RCA Yagi combo we now have in place. ... show more

I've lived in the same house for the past 20 years and had a huge antenna in my attic. But there's like one place in the attic where it will barely fit and it is hard to adjust. However it worked great for about 18 years, just the past two or three years it's been struggling to get signal and I thought the antenna was getting old or my cabling was messed up or something. I have adjusted it and tweaked it and tuned it. Been in my attic 5 times now trying to improve the signal. I was ready to give up but I couldn't stomach the cost of $129 a month to pay for some basic channels, so I thought I'd try this antenna as a last resort. It worked out amazing. Um, here's the thing. The old antenna the best signal strength I could get was 78%. If there was a storm it would drop out completely. This new antenna, I put it up and immediately got 83% and thought that'd be good, but I wanted to see if I could improve the signal so I started moving it around. I was able to get 100% signal strength on every channel when I moved it right next to an outside wall. I was amazed. I couldn't believe it. I'm so happy with this antenna. I'm going to buy another one for my sons house. Ultimately I think the old antenna was fine, but over the years there has been a lot of new construction in my area and I think that has affected the signal strength. The new antenna is smaller and I was able to locate it in a better location in my attic which is the key to getting a good signal. Install tips: Put this together on your kitchen table where you won't lose the tiny screws. I didn't read the instructions, and at first I didn't realize the small wings were different lengths, so I had to take it apart and put it back together. Start with the smaller wings and work your way up to the bigger ones. I also took some small 3/4" wood screws with me into the attic to attach the antenna to the rafters because the larger screws that came with it seemed like they were way bigger than they needed to be. But really, this is a five star product that comes with a great mounting kit that is very flexible. ... show more

  • A good antenna for transmitters within about 40 miles.
In our area, there are three transmitter sites. Two are within 15 miles of me, but about 10 degrees apart from each other. These two transmitters come in fine on either this antenna, or my older one. There is a third transmitter site which is about 40 miles away, and about 110 degrees separated from the two nearer transmitters. Before installing this antenna, I did a channel scan, and was only getting 18 out of the 23 channels these three transmitter sites were sending out. On the old antenna, I could not pick up the distant site, other than a weak carrier signal, and occasional broken up signal. After installing this antenna, I was fully detecting 23 of 23 channels. When pointed toward the distant transmitter, I now get 3 of 5 bars on the 5 channels coming from the distant transmitter. When pointed back toward the nearer transmitters, I am getting 5 of 5 bars as before. Since the transmitters are so far apart, I either need a rotor, or two antennas. For the time being, I'm using this antenna to pull in the distant transmitter's content, and one of my older HD antennas to pull in the content from the closer stations using a cheap common coax cable splitter. Since one of the two near transmitters is a few miles further out than the other, it's signal still needs a bit of help when using the older antenna, so I'm considering adding another of this model to beef the signals up a bit, and then all should be fine. At the moment, even the distant transmitter is coming with no breakup, even on 3 bars, while the nearer transmitters are as good as they've always been. By the way, I am using a small powered amp inline, but that device only seems to help the distant transmitters a little. Putting this antenna together was fairly straight forward, and I was able to do most of the assembly by guess work. I only needed the instructions to verify the positions of the three sets of "director" pairs, and getting the positions of the plastic bow shaped reflector holders in positions correctly. My only gripe is that there was no cable provided, but I had plenty here, anyway. I did not use the mast, and wall mount that came with this antenna since I have a lot of filmmaking lighting stands all over the studio. I used one of these as the mast for this, and one of my older antennas since the lighting stand is long enough to provide the needed 3 feet of separation between the two antennas, as recommended by the FCC's antenna installation guides to avoid multipath related interference which can cause breakup, and degradation of signal. Using a lighting stand allows me to reposition the antennas quickly. It also helps to have flooring in the attic. This antenna is only for indoor, and attic use ONLY. It's not strong enough to withstand the riggers of fowl weather. UPDATE: I just got the second of this model, and put it up on the same mast the first one is on. I also replaced the cheap splitter with a proper antenna coupler. Yeh, it makes a big difference. I used the Winegard CC7870 antenna coupler. Now the signals are more solidly locked, and with far less multipath breakup. We just had a majorly heavy sustained rain event last night, and the only time there was breakup was when lighting was in the area. Other than that, even with the heaviest rains, the signals remained stable. I'm still getting about three bars on the distant transmitter, but no longer intermittent. It's stable. The near transmitter is solid 5 bars. No more intermittent locking. I've still got to try, and grab a signal from yet one more transmitter located to our due west, and is about 40 miles out. I may attempt putting the cheaper antenna back in place for the near transmitter, and point one of the new antennas (this model) toward the western transmitter. At least I'm now getting much more stable performance than what I was getting. I've also learned it helps to shorten the cable run as much as possible, and to avoid coiling the cable. Hard to imagine, but coiling a coax causes signal degradation, too. ... show more
