The electronics are great but the mounting structure is the down side. The base seems sturdy enough but the assembly that the electronics snap into (the gears/teeth) releases every time I try to remove the electronics from its holster to prevent theft. Annoying mostly.

I wasn't even considering and shopping for a fish finder, but spied this model at a local sports retailer and it caught my interest. Looking on Amazon, I found it highly rated and much cheaper that the local retailer - so I pulled the trigger. Once I received the unit, I went to upload my favorite waypoints to the unit and ran into a wall - the unit can transfer waypoints between other Garmin fish finders but I cannot move my waypoints into the unit. I called Garmin and Jayden was very helpful! I am an electronics guy and also write software so I considered making up an interface to talk to the unit, but the engineers at Garmin didn't want to share the proprietary protocol for which they share data between units. I am returning this unit and buying the Echomap Plus 43cv or 44cv which have a memory card slot, which can be used to transfer waypoints. Unfortunately, these units retail at Amazon for 2x, 3x the price of the Striker 4. They do however additionally come with maps - which is desirable - for I am putting this on a kayak - I just didn't want to spend so much money for a kayak fish finder - but the geek in me likes to play with waypoints / tracks and maps. ... show more
