  • A Runner's Best Friend
This is my second Garmin watch, and replaces the ForeRunner 230. While I was hesitant to get rid of my 230, I am glad that I did so, as the 230 had seen more than its fair share of races and workouts. Despite all that it has been through, it still continues to work like a champ. One of the main reasons I loved my 230 was the long battery life, which apparently is now considered a luxury in modern smartwatches. This reminds of how cellphones have evolved (remember the Nokia 3300 series?). Thankfully, the Garmin 645 remains strong in this area, and after having this watch for a few months, I can say that it easily has the same or longer battery life as that of its predecessors. I don't have my Bluetooth on constantly, but the GPS is used almost every day for about an hour or two. For this use case, I still get about 7 days of use for a full battery charge. Effectively, this is a smartwatch that can actually come in handy for sleep monitoring - something that Apple watches can only dream of! Moving onto the features, it looks like the 645 comes equipped with a bevy of useful metrics, many of which are handy for seasoned athletes. Metrics like VO2 Max, and Aerobic workout etc. are things that I seldom look at, but definitely nice to know that I have them in case I do decide to up my routine. I use my 645 regularly to track my outdoor runs as well as those in the gym, and in both cases, the 645 performs flawlessly. The music feature on this watch is useful for those that prefer to run without their phone and like to download their music on their devices, or rather, listen to eBooks or podcasts offline. As I like to have my phone on me during runs, I don't see myself using this feature anytime soon. The same goes for the wallet feature, which I probably won't use as I usually have my phone on me all the time, which already has the wallet feature set up and ready to go. Overall, I would recommend this watch to any runners/athletes out there that like to track their workouts. Strava and other 3rd party app integration works pretty well (despite the recent Garmin outage that is still ongoing as of July 30, 2020). I am not a fan of the Connect app, which is a little clunky and looks somewhat dated. However, the watch in itself is awesome and should satisfy most of the needs that a typical active user would have. ... show more

  • Stopped working after 50 uses
Beware: low quality product. After 12 months of usage the GPS started malfunctioning and 6 months later it has failed altogether. I have used it maybe 50 times. exclusively while running. What a joke. EDIT: even though the device is well past the warranty, Garmin has offered to replace it with a refurbished one. Great customer support! ... show more

  • Checks all the boxes at a great price point.
Product serves my running needs and more while getting it under $250. Having eyed several running watches for several months, I resigned myself to not getting one that has my preferences: 1. general smartwatch features, 2. GPS, 3. onboard music + 3rd party integrations (i.e. Strava), and 4. battery life 1. Coming from a Fitbit Charge HR 2, I was a bit overwhelmed by the amount of running metrics this device has in addition to the typical steps/stairs/heart rate. Having VO2 max and zone tracking has been helpful to have more color around my performance and when I'm maintaining vs. improving. 2. I've had a Garmin GPS before I knew they made watches so no real complaints here. There's regular GPS, GPS + GLONASS, GPS + Galileo, and Ultratrac modes. Check out the folks who've done in-depth GPS comparisons for this watch among others. 3. I hate carrying my phone on runs so the music is a big plus. The implementation isn't perfect (have to download a separate Connect IQ app, and then Spotify on that app before updating playlists/podcasts) but it's simple enough. 4. I've been pretty obsessive over the battery life, which coincidentally is probably one reason I'm hurting it given how often I fiddle with it. Advertised 7 days regular smartwatch, 14 hours GPS, 8 hours music, 5 hours GPS + music. Over the past week, I do burn around 14-15% daily which matches the 7 day estimate. A 32 min run with GPS + music drained about 10% which is also in-line with the 5 hour estimate. Overall, I think it matches the advertised specifications - there are also ways to improve that thru turning off the heart rate monitor/disabling bluetooth/etc. but I figured I get enough value from them to justify the juice. In any case, it charges to 100% within the hour so not a huge deal there. ... show more
