I have absolutely no idea what all the bad reviews are about?????? I have never owned a GPS Navigator before. I ordered the Garmin DriveSmart 76 and followed the instructions on how to set it up. Downloaded and installed all the updates (Device plus Maps) using Garmin Express that I downloaded and installed before hand. I'm 72 years old for GODS SAKE!!! It has worked perfectly for me!! I LOVE IT!! I never run it off just the battery. I always have it plugged into the cigarette lighter connection, and the usb cord plugged into the blue colored output on the end of the plug that plugs into the cigarette lighter connection. There is a bit of a learning curve to this product. A few utube videos helped. I used to own a smaller, older version of this, so that helped. I do not use voice commands. I set my destination before leaving, and let it go. My truck does all my phone connects, so I do not use this feature. This larger screen shows me street names better than my smaller Garmin. I looked forward to receiving the Garmin 86. I wanted to have a larger screen and I was interested in using the portrait mode. Unfortunately, I never got to use it. Basically, the unit was dead on arrival. Usually, one defective unit I would not hold against a company, but in this case, it seems to be an ongoing problem for Garmin. After trying my unit multiple times, after less than 5 minutes each time, the unit would shut down. I suggest before buying, you go to your favorite search engine and search for "why does my garmin gps keep turning off"? No doubt you'll get multiple hits. One of the very first hits is a page on the Garmin site that specifically addresses this issue. So for them to do this, it must come up a lot. And the advice they give? Clean out your car's auxiliary socket. Really? Why does my cell phone charge just fine when plugged into the same socket? Or how about the suggestion to only use the Garmin provide an adapter. Really? What's going on, is not the Garmin standard USB? (Assuming my adapter is high enough wattage, it should just work.) Anyway, I only used the Garmin adapter, and as I stated, I still have the shut-off problem Additionally, while I did get a chance to try the device while it was on for a few minutes, I didn't think much of the user interface. This is subjective, but I thought that my 8-year old Magellan GPS unit had a clearer design and easier-to-read map details. Sending it back. I just don't trust Garmin. ... show more

I bought this to replace my much older 6" Garmin that stopped working. I like that it's thinner and smaller while still being a 6" screen. It seemed to be touchier though when using the touch screen as many times it didn't register the touch and took several times for it to recognize the command. I don't like the newer way that it works and is set up. Why change something that worked so well? I also felt that it was overpriced for what it is but what can you do? ... show more

I needed to upgrade to a GPS with a larger screen, and this works perfectly. There are many less expensive GPS's out there but they have so many bad reviews, I thought it would be best to stick with a brand name product. This model is a little pricey, but overall I was pleased.

I have had Garmin products for years. This is far the best GPS I have ever had. It is easy to use and will do just about anything that you need it to do. I am very pleased with this. I bought the 8 in model because as I get older it's a little bit easier for me to see.

Great GPS for a road trip. You can find rest stops on your route, which we love. The 7" screen is very easy to read and gives very good visual tools for upcoming exits, etc. Voice control needs a bit of getting used to to work well, but practice makes almost perfect. Gives very good traffic information. On our first trip with it the traffic was backed up ahead and it gave fairly good estimate of delay time, etc. You need to be careful with some of the suggestions for gas stations. We found that it listed a gas station near where we live that closed years ago. It also said there was gas at some chain convenience stores that did not have gas pumps. (listed one right by our house) A suggestion is while on a highway, look for popular exits which have a handful of gas stations and use them as your stops for gas refill, especially ones that show name brand gas stations. I bought the new Gamin for an upcoming trip to a city we had never visited before. What I love most is the ease of updating this Garmin. Hook up to WIFI, check for updates, bim bam boom, before you know it ,you're ready for the drive. I heartily recommend The DriveSmart 86 to anyone looking to purchase a GPS for travel. Very accurate, and if you connect via Garmin Drive you get live updates on road conditions,and you can speak to your Garmiin to get direcctions,and points of interest.
