  • Such a great golf tool
I'm a big time stats nerd, and this golf watch is awesome! I love how it helps track the distance of your drives, and makes score keeping super easy. I have already convinced my 2 golf buddies to buy one as well. Looking forward to buying the sensors also so I can track the distances of each individual club. It's already lowered my handicap by 2 strokes at least... If you're an avid golfer, it is a MUST HAVE! Also, I really like how text messages come through to the watch. I bought a Tic Watch E hoping to use if for messages and calls at a glance, but it did not work as well as this Garmin. Also, the battery life on this watch is GREAT! an 18 hole round drains about 30%, but if you're not playing golf, the charge holds for at least a week! Buy it!!! ... show more

  • Me and My S40 are in it for the Fun of Golfing
I find my S40 to deliver as advertised. The accuracy of distance to green measurements is good as is the advertised battery life for 2 rounds of golf. I also like the other activities capabilities of the watch. I track my biking and walking distances as well as steps, and the GPS is quite accurate. I am still learning all the intricacies of the golfing app. I may be a little slow, but i find it somewhat confusing when I’m walking the course and trying to check stats and input data. However, the easy to get owners manual is helping me sort it all out. This is a vast improvement in capability for me over my original Garmin S1 which I still own and is still working. ... show more

  • I used it for golf for the first time and her is what I think.
EDIT, EDIT, EDIT Played my first round with the Garmin Approach S40 and here is what I think. 1. I like the distance readings for front, middle, and back of green. 2. The greens feature where you can move the flag around on the green to its approximate position and get a distance to the flag is pretty useless, unless the green is half the size of Delaware, then it might be usefull. 3. Distance to hazards is a nice feature if you are playing a course that you are unfamiliar with, otherwise it's not something I used at all. I think most players play the same courses and know where the hazards are and how to avoid them. 4. Layup distances. A nice feature that I used twice, and nice to have on doglegs. 5. Score keeping is a nice feature but is cluttered with too many extras. I want to keep score. I really don't record the number of putts, the number of penalty strokes, or whether my drive is center, left, or right. 6. Length of drive. After a tee shot the S40 will tell you, once you reach your ball, how far you hit your drive. For me, and the fact that at my age and knowing I don't hit the ball anywhere near as I used to, this is a depressing feature. Anyway, once you hit enough drives you know how far you hit your drives. I don't care about this feature. 7. After the round you can review your score. The S40 has about three or four ways it tells you exactly the same information. 8. I counts steps, just like you fitbit. 9. Weather? Mine has worked occasionally but it's such a pain that I just turned it off. Anyway, it I am playing golf I know what the weather is. 10. Messages, email, and events. Just turn it off. I don't want my wrist buzzing overtime someone sends me an email or text message and I should be able to remember what is happening tomorrow. 11. PLUS, PLUS, PLUS-- When you approach the first tee and turn the device on it finds the course, puts you one the first tee, and then tracks you all around the course. I think this is a GREAT feature and the main reason I bought the S40. 12. The silicone band pretty much sucks. It isn't uncomfortable at all, in fact, I don't even realize I am wearing the unit during the round, but if you sweat much, plastic might not be something you want wrapped around you wrist. And the keepers, there are two, don't stay in place and the strap will slip out of them. It is advertised as a quick release band but it is not quicker than any other watch band I have owned. SUMMARY: I really like the distance feature for front, middle, and back of green. That is what I will use most often. Anywhere you are on the course it give you those three most important distances. I will use the hazard and layup distance feature one courses that I am not familiar with, so that is a plus. I will keep score with it but will likely pass on the other score keeping features. I WISH that Garmin would put out a GPS watch with fewer features. It is clear that they jammed as many cute little tricks into this watch just because they could. Just give me a watch with basic distance features and I will be fine. I don't really need all of the other things. I don't know if I would buy this again, not at $270. It is better than my old range finder that I had to put up to my eyed and read the flag. Basically, I like it, but it does far more than I want in a GPS golf watch. Thanks for reading. I hope this helps someone. On the surface this seems like a great little device, and I purchased it primarily for the golf course GPS feature. But it would be nice if the other features worked as well. I haven't had it on a golf course yet so I can't comment on that feature but will update after I do. The watch I like. The weather widget seems a bit confused. Yesterday it was sunny and about 80, but the S40 told me it was 86 with a 40% chance of rain. I bounced from that to something closer to reality then back again. This morning it has read the same temperature for three hours now. The sunrise/sunset feature is cute but I don't know how accurate it is. If I have to look it up on the computer or listen to the news to verify it then it is pretty useless. It is supposed to sync with my iPhone and show my calendar events but it doesn't work. I chatted online with someone at the Garmin website about it and he wasn't any help. He simply asked if I had Garmin Express on my computer and maybe that would help. I did and it didn't. Counting steps is cool but it won't interface with the Garmin Connect app. It knows the device is there because in syncs in the Garmin Golf app. When I go to Garmin Connect it says it cannot find the device even though I am holding the phone in the same hand as the watch. Like I said, it would be good if all of these features worked. The manual is less than helpful. Not enough info on Youtube. Like I said, I bought it for the golf features and if they work as advertised then I will be happy. There is a feature on the golf portion called Truswing. The info I found on it shows it to be a great feature. A device attaches to our golf shaft and provides and analysis of your swing on your phone. Looked like a great feature. Unfortunately, Garmin has stopped making the device. Probably worked as well as the events app. Anyway, I will edit this after a round of two of golf. This is why I bought it and I certainly hope it lives up to all of the hype. ... show more

  • Great watch and golf tracker
The watch is very comfortable and looks nice. The features work well, but would be nice if it had a couple of the other major fitness tracking features, like heart monitor. Used it twice on the golf course so far and it was easy to use and accurate. Outside of the normal watch function, I also enjoy the weather app and fitness/step tracker. For the price I don't think you can do better than this Golf GPS watch. ... show more

  • Meet the expectations as a watch and golf gps
I had a s20 before this one. The round shape of S40 is more like a watch. Battery is enough to run 2-3 rounds. Easy distance to hazard when playing golf and easy to enter score and settings. Color display is better than S20. Connecting to my iPhone and alert me with phone calls while playing a round. Bought this at Prime day, so far so good. ... show more

  • Very accurate!
I debated whether to buy this or a rangefinder. If you play a course where you can always see the flagstick then I would probably get a rangefinder. My home course has a lot of trees and hills and a lot of times I cannot see the flagstick from where I am. This will give you the very accurate measurement to front center and back of green. Very happy with everything about this including price. Also looks somewhat stylish compared to other products on the market. I purchased largely based on the Garmin name ... show more

  • quality built watch
i upgraded from the S20 i had for years. PROS~ the S40 looks great and works well. battery life is great. the screen is very readable and clear getting distance to hazards are also great. CONS~ its a bit heavier and took a little bit to get used to it. i dont like how there isnt a round summary like on the s20...i know i can pair it with the app on my phone but my phone usually stays in the cart. the button on the side seems to be pressed fairly easily. and more often than not it gets pressed on its own. i did notice some variations on distances from my old watch to the new using them side by side. all in all its a good golf watch. i only use it for golf, none of the bluetooth extras ... show more
