  • Very Impressed with device
Item arrived quickly and in perfect condition. Setting up the account necessary to operate the device was very straight forward and easy as was activating the device with Garmin. Just follow the instructions in the manual and you shouldn't have any problems. The device itself is awesome. It has a myriad of features that work well and is very user friendly to operate. The buttons used to operate the device are well thought out, conveniently placed and make it extremely easy to navigate through and select any/all of the features the device offers. I usually get intimidated trying to operate a device that has a bunch of buttons on it, but this device is a breeze to operate. The maps, the tracking features and especially the communication features (text & email) are fantastic and the best part is all those features are available without having to rely on having a cell signal. Also, the ability to permit your friends/family to track your location on an online map in "real time" is great. Lastly, the SOS button could literally save your life if you ever get injured out in the wilderness where there's no cell service. Just hit the button and then communicate with rescuers as they respond to assist you. My feeling is that the device is worth it just for the SOS feature alone, but the communication abilities and other features just make it even that much better. Using the available "EarthMate" app you can easily pair the device via bluetooth with your smart phone or tablet which enables you to use your phone to access and use the device features. This makes it especially easy to send text messages since you can now use the keyboard on your phone rather than having to manually find and click on individual letters on the device to send a text. I did have to spend some time watching product support videos and reading available product tutorials to fully understand all the features and how to use them, but I actually enjoyed that process and within a short time I was extremely comfortable with the device and how to get maximum use out of it's features. If you spend time out in the wilderness where there's no cell service then you should really consider purchasing this device.... you and your family and friends will be glad you did. ... show more

  • Could be a life saver
I purchase the unit mainly for its inReach feature. But before we get to that and why lets talk about features and support. When first setting up my unit I had some issues with connectivity. A call to support they let me know that a server was down causing the issue but walked be thru an other avenue to set the unity up-they were pleasant and helpful!! In addition Garmin provides great how to videos and webinars on using the unit-spend time there learning. The unit to iPhone and laptop interface is a snap to use and very intuitive. Loading and using maps is also easy to follow-have an issue go to the videos on the Garmin wensite. Now why I wanted the inReach feature. NOTE: The inReach feature requires a annual subscription and there are several levels to choose based upon how you plan to use your inReach. You can move up or down in plans as needed. The MapShare feature lets friends and family know where you are and allows them to reach out to you while on your via text during your adventures thru the satellite connection. That same connection can let them know where you and if are running late starting the hike or delaying somewhere. Emergencies can happen in an instance and where I hike there is little to no cell service. With the inReach you are able to send a text message which attaches your location to phone or e-mail addresses. The SOS feature on the unit puts you in touch with a person that works with you coordinates search and rescue or help you may need and stays with you till help arrives or your situation is resolved. No I do not work for Garmin but I do see the value of this product and the piece of mind it gives me on the trail in addition to the GPS features which are great!! ... show more

  • Even better than previous generation InReach Explorer+ and Battery Stays Charged when turned off for over a month
[WARNING: THIS IS NOT A NORMAL GPS - YOU NEED A SUBSCRIPTION FOR THE IRIDIUM NETWORK. BUT IT'S 100% WORTH IT AND COULD SAVE YOUR LIFE] ***UPDATE*** I have had this unit for a year now and it has never let me down. What is super impressive is the battery life. I have had it turned off in a drawer for a little over a month and the battery is still at 100% when i turned it back on. That... is exceptional. No other electronic device I own has that kind of battery life. **************** It breaks my heart to hear about people going hiking in the desert or high mountains and getting lost, only to be found days or weeks later, if at all. This does not have to happen with today's technology. The new InReach is Everything you loved about the previous generation InReach Explorer+ with some extra benefits. Now the whole unit is ruggedized and water resistant with better designed buttons. And the fact you have detailed topo maps built in is a killer feature now. No longer do I have to refer back to my paired iOs device to see map detail. It's one less unit I have to carry. One less battery i have to worry about. I was truly worried this would go downhill once Garmin acquired them, but so far, Garmin has added value to InReach. If you ever go anywhere where you MAY be out of cell coverage... or if you want some added insurance for a loved one (so you can reach them or they will be to be able to reach you)... Buy this unit... subscribe to the $12 a month plan. Rest easy. This could save your life. Also... don;t skimp. Get this unit. Not the cheaper version. If you plan to skimp... do your own meal prep instead of buying pre-made freeze-dried meals for your next backpack trip. ... show more
