  • Great size for jewelry work--and excellent "Made in the USA" quality!
This size is great for jewelry making work, such as hammering rings out on an anvil. It has just enough heft to even out metal--but the rawhide won't leave any tool marks. I like the feel of this mallet--it feels good and strong and should last me many years. Note: I would recommend that you condition the mallet before use. I soaked the head of mine in hot water for 30 minutes until the rawhide is soft, then hammered away on a clean, smooth rock--it will start out very soft and then get firmer as it dries. The working surface achieved with conditioning breaks in the mallet quickly and will get you better results in your work. ... show more

  • Before you order, make sure its the size you want.
Ok, first I am going to talk about the other reviews giving less that 5 stars due to the size being smaller than they thought. In the item description it gives the measurement across the head, and the depth of the head. They are not selling this as a 5lb sledge, they are selling it as what it is described as, and if you can't order what you are looking for, that's your bad, not the sellers, or fault of the product. Now that I got that out of my system. What a well built rawhide mallet. Yes, it is small, but if you don't want to damage something very fine, its perfect. I plan on buying larger sizes later. I have used it to drive wiper seals in hydraulic cylinders, and wheel seals on trailer hubs. I have also used it to remove stubborn pistons and glands on hydraulic cylinders without fear of damaging the ram-rod, and that is where a heavier one will come in handy. ... show more

  • Light weight, but works well.
leaves no marks on my work and allows me to form wire on my mandrel and flatten metal on my steel block. A must have for metal smithing. Definitely not a heavy mallet, but just the size and weight that I like for small work.

  • Great Product!!
The size 1 was perfect for me. The handle is 8" long. I use it to work on band instruments. It is extremely high quality. Made in the U.S.!! I am very impressed with it!

  • It was smaller than I expected, but it did the trick.
I had some mouthpiece jammed into a tuba bit. I read that a "sideways glance" with a raw mallet would fix it. It ended up being a couple dozen whacks. But it worked without damaging anything.

  • Good little wooden mallet
I was expecting this wooden mallet to be a little bigger but that’s my fault for not checking dimensions of product. Overall was good just didn’t feel like it was sturdy enough I used it for leather working but overall pretty pleased with this product

  • Rawhide mallets are hard to find
I had a rawhide mallet years ago and used it for various crafts; woodworking, stained glass, and jewelry making. I have been looking for a new one but couldn't find them at any hardware or craft stores. It seems online is the only place to find them anymore. I am very pleased with my new mallet. It is good quality and I'm sure it will probably last the rest of my life. The size 1 is small, great for wire jewellery work. This vendor was also excellent. Quick efficient service. ... show more

  • Works well on stuck brass instrument slides
I got this tool to get a stuck slide from a trumpet that I was trying to get unstuck for two months. After two weeks of light taps from this hammer a gave the slide a tug and was able to get it unstuck.
