Frequently asked questions

To use the soil pH test kit, start by collecting a small sample of soil from the area you wish to test. Remove any debris, such as sticks or stones, then wet the soil with distilled water to create a slurry. Dip a pH test strip into the slurry, ensuring it's fully immersed, then wait for the amount of time specified in the kit's instructions. After waiting, compare the color of the strip to the color chart provided with the kit to determine the pH level of your soil.

The ideal soil pH range for most garden plants is between 6.0 and 7.0, which is slightly acidic to neutral. However, some plants thrive in more acidic or alkaline soils. It's important to know the specific needs of the plants you're growing, as the correct pH is crucial for nutrient availability.

Yes, the soil pH test kit is suitable for testing the acidity and alkalinity of soil for both indoor and outdoor plants, including garden lawn grass, flowers, vegetables, compost, and more. It's a versatile tool for gardeners and plant enthusiasts to ensure the health and growth of their plants by maintaining the optimal soil pH.

Testing soil pH before planting is important because it helps you understand the soil's acidity or alkalinity, which significantly affects plants' ability to absorb nutrients. If the soil pH is too high or too low for your plants, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies, poor growth, and a lack of vitality. By knowing the soil pH, you can take corrective actions, such as applying lime to raise pH or sulfur to lower pH, to create the ideal growing environment for your plants.

  • Finally I have a test for accurate pH in my soil!!
Size: 1.9L x 1.9W x 4.3H
I tried several meters to test soil pH and they weren't accurate. So I decided to try these pH test strips from Garden Tutor. I finally got an accurate reading. It was hard to determine some of the shades of color against the bottle so I put the test strip into the guide and sent it in to Garden Tutor. Within a few minutes my test strip had gone though their computers, read my strip and sent me back an email with the exact pH. Finally I have a test for pH that I can count on to be accurate. I give Garden Tutor 5 stars for great work and results within minutes!! Thank you. Betty Chase ... show more

  • Arrived very late. Order early!!
Size: 1.9L x 1.9W x 4.3H
The test kit worked well and was accurate compared to a UW Garden extension. As far as delivery to my home, it was days late when promised right away. These few days matter when planting a garden.

  • Seems accurate if used correctly
Size: 1.9L x 1.9W x 4.3H
Found the strips easy to use. As directed, 1/2 c of distilled and 1/2 c of soil...mix...wait 30 minutes. Swish just inside the mixture and shake off. I have 2 different gardens and I got a 6.5 on one and a 6.4 on the other. I will use periodically throughout the growing season, too.

  • Hard to read at the acidic end
Size: 1.9L x 1.9W x 4.3H
I got these strips to test my peat moss I got from the garden store, to make sure it was actually acidic, for planting blueberries in. Unfortunately, these strips are very hard to distinguish at the acidic end (ph 3.5-5.5). Even the middle rang (6-7) isn't great. The alkaline end is pretty easy to read, as the four rows each vary quite a bit in color in that range. But if you're trying to read acid, you're basically only going to be able to go off of the top blue-green row - the other three appeared to me to be virtually identical from 3.5 to 5.5 ph. And this despite the "acid" end covering a full 2 ph range, while each of the other two ranges only covers 1 and 1.5 ph change. So the scale with the most range has the least color variety. The pictures in the listing are actually a bit misleading, because they never show you the entire low end of the scale, which is the poorly differentiated end. I did also test a strip against our tap water, which is known to be alkaline, and the strip read about 7.5 to 8. So I do think the strips are probably accurate, chemically. But the color differentiation on the acid end makes that end very hard to read with the naked eye. I would definitely NOT recommend at all if your focus is on maintaining a certain acidic ph. If you just want to maintain below 6, well, these will probably suffice. But if you specifically want to be in the say, 4.0-5.0 range, these won't be overly useful. ... show more
