I tried several meters to test soil pH and they weren't accurate. So I decided to try these pH test strips from Garden Tutor. I finally got an accurate reading. It was hard to determine some of the shades of color against the bottle so I put the test strip into the guide and sent it in to Garden Tutor. Within a few minutes my test strip had gone though their computers, read my strip and sent me back an email with the exact pH. Finally I have a test for pH that I can count on to be accurate. Pretty easy to use; accceptable accuracy; cost effective

While using this kit involves a lot more work than the 'push it in and read' type of pH testers, the results are way more accurate than what I got with inexpensive probe-style readers. The cost per test is very reasonable and the instructions provided with the kit are clear and detailed. My biggest hurdle using it was distinguishing the colors on the test strips to compare them with the color key. A larger key and larger strips would have made that easier. While nothing beats the accuracy of a true lab test, for my home garden this kit has been far more helpful and useful than the inexpensive probe readers. Worked for me when following directions

My results matched the professional soil analysis of 7.5-8.0. I used distilled water and left my sample soaking over night. My soil is clayey, so after one minute, I had to dip the test strip in distilled water and also wipe it with a paper towel to see the results. (Coffee filter was not very useful.) I had an easy time reading the results since the colors are differentiated on the base/alkaline side. Mildly acidic results look harder to differentiate. Seems accurate if used correctly

Found the strips easy to use. As directed, 1/2 c of distilled and 1/2 c of soil...mix...wait 30 minutes. Swish just inside the mixture and shake off. I have 2 different gardens and I got a 6.5 on one and a 6.4 on the other. I will use periodically throughout the growing season, too.

Inaccurate Findings?

I followed the instructions to a T, and the results were very strange. The tests reported that all of my garden beds were depleted or highly deficient of nutrients, which was a weird given the face that I've only had the garden beds for one year. A bit odd, but not entirely out of the question. However, the test that made me raise an eyebrow the most was the nitrogen sample. According to it, all of my beds were completely depleted...I even tested straight fertilizer that was high in nitrogen...and it said that it was depleted. It wasn't until I let the test sit for another 10 minutes (longer than what the instructions recommended), did I see that it started to change slightly in favor of the nitrogen. All this to say, it may not be completely inaccurate, but it feels fussy to use, and I'm not entirely sure if I can trust all the results. ... show more

Be sure to use distilled water for the test

I first purchased one of the meters that you just stick into the ground. Like a lot of reviews, mine read 7 all the time. However, I did notice it would move slightly so I figured it was probably working. With such a small scale to compare to, it was hard to tell if the reading was really 6.5 or 7.5 or just 7.0. I still suspected that the potting mix I was using was not an ideal pH so I bought this kit. I believe this is a lot more accurate, however, the instructions could be better -- especially those listed on here. Since the soil you're testing is mixed with water it stands to reason that the pH of the water could affect the readings. No where on the listing page does it say anything about using distilled water. However, I know my water has a lot of mineral content so I used distilled water on my own. Reading thru the entire pamphlet that comes with the strips, at one point it does mention that using distilled water is preferred. Why not just put that in the instructions to begin with. And as others have pointed out it's kind of difficult to line up the strip with a perfect match on any of the markings on the bottle. I was able to get close and it confirmed that the potting mix is indeed on the alkaline side. I suspected as much since I lost some cucumbers and squash after their leaves started turning yellow. At least this confirmed my beliefs so I'll now try to add some sulphur to lower the pH. Another thing the instructions on this page talks about waiting 30 minutes for the soil and water to mix. That is the minimum time ... the full instructions say for best results wait 8 hours. So, again, I believe the instructions on the product listing here are almost misleading. I do believe this has some value and unless you need to know the pH within a tenth of a point, this will probably suffice. Just use distilled water. ... show more

For the beginner, expert, and pro Gardner, these strips will help you determiner the ph level of your soil. They are easy to use and come with a chart to match up the ph level. When you store this item, make sure your chart is sealed in a zip bag to protect from water and sun exposure. You must have the chart for future use.
