  • Solid home media server replacement.
I ordered the unit, along with 4 4-TB Western Digital 3 1/2" drives. The NAS and the drives all arrived on the same day, so I was able to dive right in. Physical installation of the drives was easy with no tools required. There were screws provided for smaller drives if needed. With drives installed, I connected the unit to a network switch with the two network cables that were provided and powered up. The unit runs quietly, really only with the sound of the working hard drives being audible from about 4 feet away. Connection to the configuration utility was easy, and within 10 minutes, I had selected the networking options, raid options, user creation steps, and system update process. Shortly after, I was creating the network shares I needed and started to copy data from my old Windows server to the NAS. One important feature is music streaming, as I have a large CD collection that I have digitized. This is where there was some trouble with the Media Server apps. I tried UPnP Media Server V2, which installed fine. I couldn't see any content though from my music clients. I then manually specified the music and media directories. After running a scan for media, content was found, however, my music clients were seeing picture files, not music. So...I tried MiniDNLA. That worked great, and my streaming clients are able to play content from there. That has been the only problem thus far, and the only reason for 4 stars instead of 5. The availability of other apps is impressive, and I look forward to trying more. ... show more

  • Frustrating, needs better software for both mac and pc
Intent: I want to start by saying that I will keep this product, as I've invested over a week of time after work into it. Ultimately, I wanted a RAID 10 4-bay Linux box with an external backup and HDMI out to use as a go-between on a MAC and PC I have. I really never wanted to have it on my network, as my router is on the other side of a wall, but so be it. This was close, so I thought I could set it up with a router or to go direct and lock the network down around it. At least, that's what I thought and it's really not it's intended purpose. Pros: It's a good quality device, Asus and another company built it together and it's a great value. It's simple enough to use but has a little bit of a learning curve. It's RAM is upgradable, and extendable from a software app perspective. Easy to upgrade, easy to install and likely awesome if you want to connect everything to your network and then run software from a PC that puts access to your drive on the internet. In a lot of ways, I'm really pleased with many aspects of it from interface to physical size, design, and features. Mehs: Software support for this is cumbersome and good luck talking to a human. Responses will come back, but expect to wait a while in their forum. As far as googling solutions, well, good luck, it's buried out there somewhere but not easily found. Apps are somewhat limited, especially for fringe uses like mine, some work great but many of them depend on open firewalls and internet connections. This device does not have a Wireless Connection built in, so you can use 1 of 3 USB ports for that as a backup, and I put a wireless keyboard and mouse in USBx2 and a backup drive in USBx3. I did just that and gave static IPs to all my hard wired connections to all three devices, and connected them to each other (ensuring that my OSes were setup to handle that - deciding to allow it to connect to the internet, but keeping those two PCs connections to it hardwired for speed). Most of this is acceptable and does as intended until you add in EZ Connect or EZ Sync, that's when things get glitchy. All of the software is for PC or MAC, primarily for PC. The two common software items between MAC and PC are Download Assistant and Control Center. Download Assistant which allows you to pull torrents onto your NAS into a download area. Control Center, the app you need to have really any easy access to the device outside of just connecting through the browser or mapping drives. If you're like me, the functionality you want is in the other apps... Time machine backup was cool, but not sure why it stopped working. Cons: All of the software for it. You have a lot of options on a PC, the mac only has the two aforementioned. * Win: ASUSTOR Backup Plan, a very cool backup tool which allows you to sync or backup to the main "ADM" section from which you can use the app inside the NAS to backup externally. Here's the way to sync between a PC and Mac, but only by using the network drive. * EZ Sync (that requires you to run the service on the box. It then creates a special sync folder which you can only access from Windows and cannot backup using the backup app - WTF?), you can do that sync function but it's partitioned from the rest of ADM. *EZ Connector, make a folder or drive a part of your internal cloud. This was cool until I broke the settings somehow, I can't get it to work now and that fine. How this could be better: * One software tool with all the functionality should be made, all the same functionality should exist between both operating systems. The setup of this on my mac was a nightmare. * I want to love this device... but the software needs improvements. Just because the internet goes of from a storm, or some other firewall issues, shouldn't result in such great loss of functionality of a local NAS. After two months of ownership: Ownership of this project has been a test in patience. It's generally a waste of time to contact Asustor support. They'll ask for your username and password, demand access to your system and then never login. I've had an ongoing issue for 6 weeks without resolution with them. I would recommend going with another product maybe the WD MyCloud instead. As easy as I found it to setup the device, every problem takes forever to resolve and you are left to your own devices. Mac support is weak. This product has so much potential but the company needs to learn how to support their product. ... show more

  • Simply amazing!
I had a basic 2-disk NAS prior to this one so upgrading to 4 disks was great for additional storage, but it's not just that. Being able to run Docker has allowed me to move my Unifi Controller off the home gaming PC. Same with my download process. Emby media server on the NAS combined with the Roku app eclipses the experience we had with simple file sharing of the old NAS and Kodi/Roku TVs. I also migrated Subsonic off the gaming PC, but with Emby that will likely be shut down. I've also been able to add Pi-Hole for whole-house ad blocking and added security by blocking malicious domains. Beyond that, the Asustor backup utility is far better than the legacy Windows 7 tool half-assed in Windows 10. I went from backing up 1.2TB from my primary workstation's 500TB drive (due to needless duplicate files) to 280GB. That eliminates wasted space and simplifies my restore process if needed. It has been a major relief to get everything setup on this NAS and just let it run without messing with it constantly. I can even VPN into my network through the NAS as needed now (or to block ads on my phone). The Asustor university pages have been a big help figuring out more advanced options as well. Even with all the apps I have running the CPU idles and there's RAM to spare so I haven't seen a need to upgrade to 8GB RAM yet. Update 8/31/2021: I ended up upgrading to 8GB of ram after infrequent 80%+ usage alerts came through. I think as more people in the house use Emby it started creeping up. Also setup weekly reboot tasks to flush the memory. I also wound up replacing Pi-Hole with AdGuard Home. AGH has been a MUCH simpler install and maintain process with more features and easier logging. NAS itself is still running great and essentially headache free outside those changes. ... show more
