This 12-piece oil paint brush set comes with a very good variety of brush head shapes and sizes along with a pretty good palette knife. The brushes are odorless. The canvas case has an easy to open and close zipper and it is really nice feature that the brush holder sections can be folded upright similar to a cell phone case, so that while painting I have easy access to all the brushes. These brushes are pretty strictly for oil painting and less than ideal for acrylics. The ferrules are good quality, and the handles are easy to hold. The natural hog bristles had a few stray strands that I did trim before use but no big deal.     • Doesn't work well for acrylic paint
Size: 13 pcs oil brush set
These hog bristle brushes work. I started with the one-inch flat brush. I used an 18 X 24-inch canvas with heavy student-body acrylic paint. While the brush worked well laying down a base coat on my primed gesso-covered canvas, I did run into a problem with bristles shedding in my paint. The shedding was minimal, perhaps four or five bristles, but this problem was annoying. I found cleaning the acrylic paint from the flat brush incredibly difficult. I use a paint well and brush preserver as I do not want to put paint into my septic system. It took many coats of preserver and brush cleaner to get the paint out of the flat brush, and I did not load it with a lot of paint. Once my base coat was dry, I began to explore the other brushes in this set. There was no shedding of bristles. The paint went on smoothly, and I could create the strokes and effects I wanted. Again, cleanup was difficult. While these brushes are nice to use with acrylic paint, I found the cleanup process a pain. I do not use oil paints. Perhaps since these brushes are designed for oil painting. The product description stated that these brushes could be used with acrylic paint, so I tried them. I enjoyed painting with them, but the cleanup was too burdensome—an average rating of three stars for acrylic painting only. ... show more

    • Good beginner brushes.
If you are a beginner or is for your kids, they are good brushes, as they are inexpensive and ruining them while you leanr isnt a big deal. You have enough types to cover a variety of different tasks and techniques. A quick trick, since they are on the cheaper side, run a comb a couple of times thru them before first use to dislodge the hairs that arent glued in correctly to the stem so you they dont come loose and stick on your canvas. ... show more

    • Will not be my favorite
I am just getting back into testing oil painting after using acrylic and watercolor for a while, so I am still getting to know the paint accessories again. These brushes are okay, but I did have trouble with cleaning them. You get a nice variety, although I could have used a few smaller types, and you get the knife along with the case for them. I have no trouble spreading paint, and they seem to do well covering a canvas. I did notice when I went to wash them off the first time that they seemed to be holding onto more paint that I expected to see because nothing was going off of them onto my canvas, and I would have to keep getting more paint on them. They seemed to be storing it in the middle of the bristles somehow, which I have not seen before with other brushes. I also had trouble using my normal wash for oil paint to get the paint off. I had to scrub so hard on them I am afraid they will wear out fast. I am going to test some more brands before I use these again. It may just be myself not being as used to oil painting that is the issue, so I would compare reviews. ... show more

My niece and I have had so much fun working with these pieces !! These hog bristle brushes seem so expensive! They work nicely and I feel that they make the strokes with the brushes go much smoother and evenly ! They are also easy to hold as you make your strokes !! It said for beginners but I feel these could be for all ages and level of artists ! ... show more

I've been doing oil painting for some time, but wanted to add some more variety in my brushes. I like that these come with a case for storage/transportation. No issues or hairs falling out at this point. Happy I got these!

This is a great set for $20 — the selection of brush sizes and shapes is quite good, especially with the addition of a nice, sturdy palette knife. I would consider these more student-grade brushes, and good for a textured, brushier style of painting — these hogs bristle brushes seem a bit roughly cut but appropriately stiff, and the set includes a couple round nylon brushes for smoother, more blended work. They are all holding together pretty well so far, so as long as they don't start shedding a ton as they see more use, I'd say they're a good value. ... show more
