Based on the low price, I wasn't confident that this would be sturdy enough but took a chance based on positive reviews. Easy to assemble and more than sturdy enough. Perfect size for my needs and looks nice, too.

    • Light Duty free-standing shelf isn't as sturdy as one may want

This unit uses particle-board shelves covered in good-looking vinyl (black wood grain, in my case). It was easy to assemble. But then I noticed the "50 lb" weight limit sticker stuck on one of the shelves. This limit is real. The unit CAN support 50 lbs of weight sitting immobile on the unit. But any attempt to slide the unit (i.e. you need to adjust the position a little) will reveal the very weak corner post configuration. The middle joint in each corner post is the flaw. There is NO lateral strength against twisting. So DON"T move it even a little if it's got more weight on it than you can lift. Empty it, reposition it and then re-fill it. I strongly recommend limiting it to supporting only 40 pounds. Also, I have a lot of experience with "edge-supported" particle board used as shelf material. ONE: Don't water plants on this thing. That will kill particle board quickly. TWO: These are "big" shelves. If you have any weight in the center of one of them, it will begin to sag in the middle. It may take ten years...so maybe that isn't a real downside. I'm keeping it because it's inexpensive and I don't want the hassle of returning it. I'll just replace when and if I have to. But plywood is a much better shelf material. ... show more
