  • Ultimately seems worth it, even for us bigger folk
Size: Twin XL
This review covers this mattress and the companion XL Twin tatami. As such, this review will be posted in the tatami link as well. /futon combo 2/3 week review. Week one: Fell asleep easily, woke up often. Tatami is 3-panel folder. I notice the top/middle seam sometimes depending on how I hit it, and it can wake me up. Some hip soreness from where my weight settles on my hips on the setup. Week two: Hip soreness intensifies. Tried various ideas to help avoid that problem, but problem persists. Joel more stubborn so. . . Week three: very slight hip pain now. Hardly waking up. Infrequent Princess and the Pea moments. If I'd do anything different, it'd be to get a single panel tatami. I am averaging 230, 5'10" (maybe still 11" idk), 42.7 years of age. Perhaps I am blessed to be able to get up and down into that position. But I am adjusting quite well. And I believe this combo can work for anyone. Back pain no longer exists. I wake up, I get out of the tatami, I stand up, I don't feel as groggy. I want to get out of bed, not suffer in it. Tatami kicks my ass out of bed. Not because I am uncomfortable, but because my body somehow seems to realize now that bed is a part of my life, not my actual life. There's a lot more going on there that I cannot explain because I am just a mere, often self-absorbed mortal. But I kid you not. I'd rather have minor tenderness on my hip bones than to feel like my back is collapsing in on itself, as I had on several super firm mattress configurations. My setups over the last five years: 1) up till recently, some form of cheap memory foam mattress (or sometimes more expensive) on a frame. 2) #1 on the floor 3) thin mats on the floor 4) cot/mat combo, horrible horrible 5) tatami/futon #5 wins for me. Never truly appreciated the floor experience until I did what the Japanese and others have done forever and ever it seems. I could pack up my rig and travel with it if I want. The entire setup weighs about 15 pounds and collapses in on itself in a 3x3 square (or thereabouts). ... show more

  • Comfortable, Buy a Cover.
Size: Queen
I had back surgery about a year ago. Afterwards, I began to notice through the healing process which was rather short and not very complicated, that sometimes when I would sleep on my $7,000 Tempur-Pedic mattress, that it would start hurting my back. Now I will say that in spite of the fact that I had I would say a mid-range Tempur-Pedic mattress and I had had it for about 5 years, it seemed that after the surgery I just wasn't comfortable. I also wasn't looking to spend another $5,000 to $7,000 on a mattress set and such. So I spent about $250 dollars on this. And then I spent about $60 on a cover. And didn't get the grass mat to put them on. And I put it on my floor and I laid down on it the first night. And I do not sleep easily, And 10 minutes later I was asleep. I have used it for about 3 months now, I don't fold it up. I just leave it out on the floor because I don't have a need to fold it up. There are some things that I appreciate about it more than anything in the world. Number one you don't have to make it. All you have to do is fold up your blankets and put them at the bottom of your futon. Number two. You have two pillowcases and a cover for your futon. That's what you have to wash. It isn't super easy to take the cover on and off, much easier with another person. But you only have to do it reasonably maybe once a week. If you think that a three or four inch pad on a hardwood floor wouldn't be comfortable or that if you slept sideways, your arm would end up asleep or there would be pinch points or things like that, surprisingly, that is not the case whatsoever. It also changes the dynamic the first week or so that you sleep on it, when you wake up even in the room with standard 8 ft ceilings, You feel like the room is much larger when you're laying on the floor, when you stopped to consider that on most beds you're probably a good two and a half feet off the ground, it is different. The other thing is that I didn't need anything more than a coffee table I got from my sister-in-law, which props up my TV enough that I don't have to mount it on the wall or buy a tall dresser to put it on. Not only that, but if you have ever had to take a bed frame apart and put it back together, if you have ever had to move a bed frame in a strange sort of physical puzzle of getting it in and out of a room that was built back when people were a little bit thinner and a little bit smaller. If you have ever felt like you, just wanted to lay down and didn't want to waste your time putting an entire bed together and putting off your day by 3 or 4 hours that first day you move in. I assure you that I took that shikibuton, I gently folded it up, walked up my stairs, went to my master bedroom, unfolded it, and then threw blankets and pillows on top of it. And it was done. ... show more

  • Fantastic Mattress
Size: Queen
I first ordered the twin version of this to put on our convertible couch because you could always feel the structural bar smack down the middle of the couch - very uncomfortable. I had been padding it with layered comforters when we'd fall asleep on it or had guests. This mattress is amazing. Allow it the time it needs to air out and dry on both sides. The first time I slept on it - on our old uncomfortable couch - it was a new story. I slept so very comfortably - couldn't feel the bar - and was out like a light in minutes. Woke up not feeling sore or tired. I loved it so much that I actually bought the queen sized one to put on top of our memory foam mattress that just doesn't give me the support I need. With this mattress on top - I'm sleeping comfortably, and soundly. It's a game-changer. Totally worth the time I took to find the right Japanese-made product. ... show more

  • Best sleep of your life
Size: Twin XL
I haven't really compared mattresses all that much, but this is a winner. I had an airtop mattress and felt like it had a sink hole in the middle. I needed something more firm, so I started sleeping on the floor. I enjoyed it but my previous floor mattresses would have the cotton pool to one side of it. I decided that it's time to invest in my new lifestyle choice of sleeping on the floor. This mattress is the perfect thickness and is very comfortable. Got the twin xl but I kinda wish I got the queen size. ... show more

  • Comfortable and convenient
Size: Twin
I bought this instead of a sofa bed (always feels like a compromise) or an inflatable mattress. Itโ€™s exactly what I needed. Itโ€™s comfortable and I can food and stow it away when itโ€™s not in use. The package comes with a personal note and piece of origami from the sender, which is a nice little touch

  • Perfect
Size: Twin
I love this futon! It is just the right amount of firmness. I have it on 24" x 24"gym interlocking pads. I intend to buy a cover for it.
