  • Fantastic thumb grip
Since this appears to be a fairly new item listed on Amazon, I felt like it earned a review deserving of what I received. The thumb grip feels well built and solid. No instructions in the box that I noticed but it's relatively easy to understand when installing. Mine came with the cold shoe already attached to the grip, so if you notice it takes a little extra force to install in the hot shoe, just loosen the cold shoe attachment a little and it'll slide right in. Overall, I feel like this is a really solid value for Leica Q3 and Q3 43 owners considering some of the alternatives out there are a bit pricier. ... show more

  • The Perfect Fit: The Freewell Thumb Grip is a Must-Consider for Leica Q3 Users
The Perfect Fit: Freewell Thumb Grip is a Must-Consider for Leica Q3 Users The Leica Q3 is a beautiful piece of engineering. Still, its compact form can sometimes feel a bit slick, making it brutal to hold securely, especially with one hand. A thumb grip was a good solution. I opted to wait for the Leica version despite its high price. After two months, it still had not been released. Prioritizing utility over the brand, I ordered the MotoQueen grip (a suggestion from a Leica forum member). I ordered it from Amazon (https://a.co/d/32ViIhI). It’s been on my Q3 ever since and has proven to be a must-have accessory. The only (minor) issue - and it’s the same with the majority (perhaps all) other thumb grips is that you need to take your thumb off the camera slightly to get to the right-most dial. Recently, I spotted the Freewell version and was curious to see how it compared. The thumb grip arrived protected by a nondescript Amazon bubble-wrap envelope. Inside was a small, simple paper box about the size of a cigarette pack. A tight-fitting, transparent cellophane cover covered it. Opening the package was difficult, possibly due to my neuropathy, requiring a knife to remove the cellophane. The inner case was also a very tight fit, resulting in a small tear in the outer box. These were minor inconveniences for an otherwise good product. Inside the box are: The black Freewall Thumb Grip (cold shoe attached) A chrome Hex tool. (Allen Key) 2 x small black screws (extra screws to fasten the cold shoe) A small card with a QR code reminding you to “Unlock Your Warranty” There were no instructions, but none were needed as the installation is straightforward—the grip slides into the camera’s hot shoe (after you remove the cold shoe). Build Quality and Materials: The grip is manufactured from “CNC Aluminum”, which utilizes Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining. It feels solid and premium, perfectly matching the build quality of the Leica Q3 itself. The dark finish is smooth and flawless. They engraved FREEWELL on the outside. A great feature is the scratch-proof padding between the grip and the camera. It creates a snug fit and protects the camera’s finish from any metal-on-metal contact. Performance: The fit is absolutely perfect. The grip slides into the camera’s hot shoe with the right amount of friction. It’s secure enough to feel permanent, but easy enough to remove if needed. Once in place, it transforms the handling of the Q3. (I had to remove the grip’s cold shoe before attaching the grip to the camera). Once the grip is in place, my thumb rests naturally on the knurled thumb rest. It provides a solid anchor point, making one-handed operation much easier. Key Features: Ergonomics: The ergonomic improvement to the camera is significant. The grip provides a natural resting place for my thumb. It makes it easier to hold the camera steady, especially when shooting at slower shutter speeds or one-handed. Scratch-Proof Design: The silicone padding works as advertised. There is no sign of scuffing or scratching on my camera’s hot shoe or body (but field testing has been limited so far). Cold Shoe Mount: The integrated cold shoe mount is a brilliant addition. It holds light accessories securely without any wobble. There is no cold shoe with the grip I’ve been using. Pros and Cons: Pros: Exceptional build quality and premium materials. Excellent value compared to OEM and many other third-party versions. Perfect, snug fit for the Leica Q3. (In my case, the 28mm) Easy access to the two rear-positioned function buttons. Silicone padding effectively prevents scratches. Dramatically improves one-handed grip and stability. The integrated cold shoe mount is highly functional and secure. Cons: Haven’t found any yet. Final Verdict and Recommendation The Freewell Thumb Grip for the Leica Q3 is an outstanding accessory. It addresses the common handling concerns of the camera with a solution that is both effective and beautifully made. The build quality, precise fit, and thoughtful design make it an absolute must-consider for any Leica Q3 owner looking to enhance their shooting experience. It’s a premium product for a premium camera, and it’s well worth the investment. I highly recommend it. Disclaimer I made these observations and comments based on a single unit with less than 10 days of use. Your experience may vary. Short Version: The Freewell Thumb Grip is a must-have accessory for any Leica Q3 owner. Its CNC aluminum build feels premium and provides a perfect, snug fit in the camera’s hot shoe. The grip dramatically improves one-handed handling. It offers a secure and natural resting place for your thumb. Thoughtful features like the scratch-proof silicone padding and the integrated cold shoe mount make it a highly functional and well-designed addition to your camera. ... show more

  • Well made and much cheaper than the OEM version
I actually bought the Leica version of this for my Q3 43. I take extreme care of all of my belongings, especially when they cost what the Leica costs. So I was shocked when I took the OEM thumb grip off my camera to clean it when I noticed a silver spot of metal right where the thumb grip could touch the camera without the rubber strip blocking it. It shouldn't be possible, but it definitely happened. And it happened with very light use. I have been scared to use the OEM thumb grip because of that, so I ordered this as soon as I saw it. I haven't been using it long, but the spot of silver is not any bigger than it was. That's not saying a lot, but at least it is not bigger. I love that this version has a cold show mount on it too, just in case you need to use any accessories on top of your camera. Unless you really care about having the Leica branded one for $245, I would get this at almost 1/5 of price. They look similar and both allow you to use the function buttons on the camera. And who knows, maybe this one won't scratch the camera like my OEM version did. ... show more

  • Perfect fit for Leica Q3 43
This is a review of the Freewell Thumb Grip for Leica Q3 43/Q3. There's very little to say about this item - it just does its job well. The fit is perfect and there's no worry that it'll detach by accident. It's actually pretty difficult to remove it on purpose. The grip is better and firmer, especially while carrying it. I don't have to squeeze the camera as hard and be afraid I accidentally drop it. One drawback of using it is that you basically lose the hot-shoe functionality. If you don't use a flash, then that's not a big deal at all. Nice thing about it is that it does actually have a cold shoe mount on top, so you can use other accessories with it. The build quality is good, and the buttons are functional. You have to decide yourself about the ergonomics of using the thumb wheel, because it might get in your way. ... show more

  • A very nice addition to your Leica Q2 or Q3
The box says this is a "Thumb Grip With Hot Shoe", and it is not. It fits into the hot shoe space on my Leica, but the camera will not fire the flash. In fact it's not really for a flash, as much as for a LED or video light. And, it is also a thumb grip that fits a Q2 or a Q3, and that makes it worth its $50 price tag. Understand this grip is smaller than the OEM, but it does fit well. It is kept secure with a set screw that tightens the cold shoe to the grip itself, and it absolutely will not fall out - and it comes with extra screws. Also, it is a bit shorter on the left side than the OEM, and therefore does not cover up the viewfinder adjustment I am used to the OEM, and so I found the grip thin, but this grip does the same job, it is well made, it will hold your video light, and it is very reasonably priced. That seems to check all the boxes. I recommend it. ... show more
