  • Cuts steel as advertised
I purchased this blade to cut salvaged roofing metal. The task was hardly a challenge for this blade. Most of the time I rigged a guide to assure a straight cut. The saw blade sliced right through the 28 gauge metal. I did make a couple of freehand cuts that were successful. The only caution I would emphasize is WEAR EYE PROTECTION! I was wearing glasses that protected my eyes but I could feel my face being peppered by flying steel particles. I mounted this blade in my Milwaukee 7-1/4 inch circular saw without problems. I did need to manually rotate the blade guard to get started but once started, there was no further need to mess with the blade guard. I am very satisfied with this blade. Since it is still new, I cannot comment on longevity at this time. ... show more

  • Works on nonferrous metals as well
I ordered this blade for the rare occasions that I need to cut metal. Today I used it for the first time to cut out a piece of diamond plate that I will bend and use as a switch panel housing on my drift boat. I was really surprised at just how smoothly it cut. I’ve used standard carbide tipped woodworking blades on a skillsaw to cut aluminum and it’s always been pretty rough going. This blade cuts like butter, no jumping, no kickback, just a nice smooth easy cut. It allows you to make some pretty accurate cuts, avoiding a lot of time consuming cleanup. I’m talking about the cut, the metal shavings that are now all over the shop are going to be a different story. I probably should have used it outside. It’s a great blade to have for those of us who only occasionally need to cut metal and it seems like it would be a good blade for pros who need to make these cuts every day. I’ll never use it often enough to really understand it’s longevity but I can say it certainly didn’t lose any of it’s smooth cutting action after the 10 or 11 cuts I made. ... show more

  • Performs well. Some definite advantages over using an abrasive wheel.
Frankly, as mostly an amateur handyman (after also having done some hardware design and fabrication as part of a research and development career), I was not even aware that toothed circular-saw blades are readily available to cut ferrous metals. I was happy to find this one — which I can use in my radial-arm saw in place of an abrasive wheel to make relatively-precise cuts. I tried out this ferrous-metal-cutting blade today on a piece of half-inch-thick (mild?) steel, using multiple shallow passes of the blade at different depths — so as to avoid stalling the blade rotation by making too deep a cut at one time. I generated plenty of sparks, not too dissimilar from the sparks I see when cutting with an abrasive wheel. However, I think that the maker correctly claims that cutting with this blade generates less heat than cutting with an abrasive wheel — which creates more friction; the steel piece didn’t get very hot. I held the piece with a gloved hand, but I almost certainly would not have been burnt if I hadn't used the glove. The two attached photographs show, respectively: a) the steel bar mostly cut through and b) the smooth texture of the final cut (except for a slightly irregular spot on the cut due to my positioning error). I think this blade did a very nice, clean job. I also used the reviewed blade to through-cut a 1/16 inch-thick X 2 ½ inch-wide piece of 304 stainless steel. After aligning the tips of this blade to protrude just below the bottom surface of the metal when cut (optimal setting for a circular saw), I cut this piece relatively quickly in a single pass — with very few sparks, as might be expected when cutting an oxidation-resistant piece of metal. Very pleased with the results. I detected no significant discoloration of the stainless steel edge (except at a spot where the kerf bordered a a large hole in the stainless steel, which created a very thin cross-section of metal just next to the kerf). This observation contrasts with the edge discoloration I’ve seen after cutting stainless steel with an abrasive wheel, again suggesting that cutting ferrous metals with this blade creates less friction than cutting them with an abrasive wheel. After making both of these cuts, the teeth of the blade still look quite sharp. Very glad to have this blade in my collection of tools. ... show more

  • steel cutting blade for handheld circuilar saw
The FOXBC 7-1/4 inch circular saw blade for metal and stainless steel cutting fit perfectly in my circular handheld saw and enable it to reliably cut metals. The blade has been durable so far but I have only been cutting sheet metal so far. It leaves a clean cut without heat discoloration.

  • Fine in corded saws. I would not use in low end cordless saws.
I made a few cuts using a professional grade corded saw (5200 RPM). It did great. This saw's blade shields, top and bottom, are made of metal. No plastic, which is aptly to melt under a steady rain of sparks and bits of hot steel. Inexpensive battery powered saws, in my experience, tend to have a lower shield made of plastic. They may not even have sufficient power to make more than a few cuts. I have no experience with high end battery powered saws, so I'll say no more about this. I find it odd to read of steel studs made of 1/16" steel. Any that I have used are much lighter than that. There is a trick for cutting these studs with a saw blade like this: You may not want to trim just a few inches without using an insert to stiffen up the stud. Cutting with the wide side of the stud facing down on a supporting surface is better. A chop saw is better than a hand guided skill type saw if there are going to be more than a few cuts. These principals for cutting ordinary steel studs can be extended to cutting sheets thinner than 1/16, for those who know what they are doing. Probably better not go any further down that path here. A close examination of the teeth revealed that there are the standard right and left alternating points along with teeth that look like inverted u's. I thought at first that there were a lot of broken tips, but not so. A nice feature that is not directly mentioned. As always, ear and eye protection are essential. I'll probably be installing this blade on my table saw and thus, guide the workpiece rather than the cutting edge when this is possible. My experience with cutting sheet metal points toward using a jigsaw with the correct blade as often the best (slow) way to proceed. So maybe sticking with 1/16" or greater thickness with this saw blade is quite likely not a bad idea. Bottom line, I find no obvious reason not to recommend this saw blade. ... show more
