  • Nice axe for the price.
Style: Forest Axe
I live in northern New Mexico, we get some chilly nights here in the winter. I bought this axe to collect firewood for our fireplace. I don't have a use for a chainsaw since this isn't crucial for heating, more for novelty. I also much prefer the quiet solitude of the mountains without the noise from a chainsaw. This is nice for a quiet time in the woods and a good little workout. This is a nice axe for the price. No issues felling 12" ponderosa pine with it. I did sand the lacquer off the head and handle, applied some linseed oil, and applied a leather overstrike guard. With a little refinement this is a good axe for felling, chopping, and splitting (at least up to 12" diameter in my case). I would prefer a hickory handle due to my American nature, but I understand this is made in Germany and the Europeans use Ash as that is what they have available. For reference, the first photo is the felling axe next to a 1.5lb headed 27" pack axe. Update: I took cross-sectional measurements of the stump of the aforementioned tree I fell in six different locations with a 30° spread and discovered that this tree was not in fact 12" in diameter. The measurements are as follows: 1. 11.186" 2. 11.548" 3.11.329" 4. 11.086" 5. 10.921" 6. 11.103" Average = 11.1955" Diameter. Area of a 12" tree = 113.1 sq.in. Area of a 11.1955" tree = 98.44 sq.in. (only 87.03% that of a 12" diameter tree) I would have taken twelve measurements with a 15° spread but I was short on time. I apologize if I might have misled some of you thinking that I was able to cut down a 12" diameter tree when it was in fact 11.1955" diameter requiring only 87% of the effort that would be required to cut down a 12" diameter tree. ... show more

  • Less then
Style: Forest Axe
It’s an axe , and it may be a good one, But out of the box it’s questionable. The blade cover is garbage out the box ( the seam is split on the top inch and a half of the cover and there are three or four large chunks missing out of the front of it as well) . Back to the axe, it looks OK even though the handle is scuffed beyond belief and has multiple dents in it , as well as a rough and raised area in the grain, which may split . For the price of this act, I expected much more. ... show more

  • A great quality axe for a decent price
Style: Forest Axe
The head of this axe is large enough to get the job done. The metal head is of good quality material. The blade itself will be sharp and holds an edge. I like the painted surface which is sufficient to keep rust and corrosion at bay. The heavy weight of the head is good enough to bang wedges. The metal protective collar on the handle is a nice feature, although I prefer a leather or paracord wrap. The length of the head from the blade to the hammer face is too large for my belt holder, which is not that big of a deal. I bought this axe for doing "tree work", so it is not what I would consider a "maul". There is a difference. It will split kindling, but I would get a maul for splitting [BiG] logs into quarters or eighths. Even though the axe does not have a hickory handle, I am giving five stars. The home improvement stores sell axes and mauls that are frankly, inferior to this product. The shipping was fast and worth waiting a few days for. The Axe is labeled "Garret Wade". Don't let that throw you off. I have several Garret Wade tools and each is very good. This axe will take care of you if you take care of it. Keep it sharp and put it away when done! The Axe looks good enough to buy a hanger for, and hang it in the cabin or on the shop wall. The blade sheath is the weak link here. Go to a leather shop and get a cover made for the blade. ... show more

  • Chops, Splits, and Fells Like a Pro
Style: Forest Axe
If you're looking for a serious axe that can do it all this is the axe for you. The quality is outstanding. The European Ash handle feels solid and absorbs shock well, and the red steel collar is a thoughtful touch that protects the neck from accidental overstrikes. Whether I’m splitting firewood, clearing limbs, or dropping a mid-sized tree, this thing makes quick work of big jobs. If you need an axe that can take on serious work and still feel great to use, this is it. Highly recommended! Five stars all day. ... show more
