  • Exquisite. Sublime. But...worth the price??
The Focal Bathys MG are an audiophile bluetooth headphone with an audiophile price. That price will be a deal-breaker for the mass market but may very well appeal to audiophiles willing to spend big money for exceptional, beautiful sounding headphones. Out of the box, they sound great, and the sound quality improves with break-in. I never imagined bluetooth headphones could sound this great. You can also use the included USB-C cable to plug them directly into your smartphone, bypassing the smartphone's DAC and using the built-in Focal DAC; this takes the SQ up a few notches. The package also includes a cord with a minijack that you can plug into your stereo for wired listening if you wish. Weirdly, the power must be on for this; so the Bathys MG is not a passive headphone even when used with the analog cable. The Bathys MG have a brilliant soundstage that's wide and deep; instruments and voices sound clear and you can identify where each one is in space - true with orchestral music and even more so with smaller ensembles like jazz quartets, folk or rock bands. The bass is tight and punchy but not at all booming or out of proportion. The mids are lush and clear; acoustic pianos and guitars sound amazingly clear and beautiful. Highs are crisp. The sound has a warmth to it, I wouldn't say it's a bias, but closer to analog than any active headphones I've heard. Big disclaimer: I did not test other headphones in the same price range; that was probably dumb considering how much I spent on these. It's possible that similarly priced wireless headphones by Dali, Mark Levinson, Meze Audio, Audio Technica and the like sound better; I'd urge you to visit your local hi-fi shop and listen to a few of the competing headphones in the same price range before spending your hard-earned money. Like all Focal headphones, the Bathys MG are visually beautiful, almost a work of art. Regarding comfort: They weigh a bit more than the mostly plastic Sony & Bose mass-market headphones, but not *much* heavier, and the headband distributes the weight nicely; I found them comfortable for hours-long listening sessions. My head is a bit bigger than average, but I didn’t experience any discomfort from clamping. My wife’s is average for a woman and she found the fit perfectly comfortable and secure. The noise cancellation and transparency mode are good (grade = B+), but in this category only they are surpassed by the Sony XM series or Bose Quiet Comfort series of portable BT headphones; I’ve owned these in the recent past and would give them an A for noise cancellation and transparency mode. The carry case is a very protective hard shell case. It is nice looking and functional. It has just enough room for the headphones and the two cables I mentioned above (analog mini-jack and USB). Like all companies that sell wireless headphones, Focal makes an app for smartphones. I found it easy to use. It lets you adjust the EQ to your liking and customize some of the controls and options. Now we get to the big question. Are these worth the money? For me, sadly no. I love the way these sound. I was in heaven for about two weeks, before I decided to return them. I have a pretty good audiophile stereo system, which I will always choose over any headphones when listening at home. To listen when my wife is sleeping, I have passive/wired Hifi-man planar headphones that are pretty good with my stereo. So my main use-case for wireless headphones is when traveling or at the office. In those scenarios, sound quality is less important and convenience is more important. So I returned the Bathys MG and bought the new Sony XM6. The Sonys as you know are a mass market consumer-grade product. They cost 1/3 as much as the Bathys MG. IMHO, they're much better for traveling, they're lighter and more compact, and the noise cancellation is top-notch on a plane, train, or bus. The SQ is excellent for a consumer grade BT headphone, and for me that’s good enough on an airplane or train. If you doubt that you'd get $1500 of value from the Bathys MG, you might consider the original Bathys, which list for $699 but can often be found for around $600 - including here on Amazon. It's also a bluetooth headphone with a USB-C cable and an internal DAC that blows away the DAC in your smartphone. The SQ approaches that of the much more expensive MG model and has many of the same SQ characteristics I described above. The MG weren't right for me, but they sound ridiculous (I mean that in the best possible way). For audiophiles who do a lot of headphone listening and would value getting audiophile sound quality wirelessly from a smartphone or similar device, the Focal Bathys MG are worth your very strong consideration. ... show more

  • First Rate
I loved my Bathys OG so much that I had been itching to give the MG’s a try since they were introduced last spring. When the price dropped $300 with Amazon’s Black Friday promotion, I jumped. Are these MG’s noticeably better than the OG? Yes, although the improvements are not dramatic, the MG's are more comfortable, the ANC is slightly better, and the sound is clearer, more detailed, richer, and more spacious. Also, the sound separation among instruments also is better. That is not to knock to OG, it just reflects that the MG’s are, indeed, a step up. I also appreciate the MG’s 3db volume increments versus the 5db on the OG, a difference that makes it easier to dial in just the right volume for any given selection. This latter factor is more important than you might think initially. I also own a pair of Focal Hadenys, which are wired to my video system. Compared to both Bathys models, the open-backed Haydenys deliver an even richer sound, better timbre, a slightly larger soundstage and noticeably better bass, but they are less comfortable (overly mushy ear pads don’t complement the clamping force). For me, the MG’s portability and comfort make them my go-to headphones for most listening outside of movies. In fact, both the OG’s and MG’s seem to highlight vocals more so than the Hadenys, which stand out more so with purely instrumental music. Each of these realities underscores why I prefer all Focal options over my now-retired Sennheiser HD 700s and HD 560S2s, neither of which delivered the listening experience I prefer. Are the MG’s improvements worth double or triple the price of the OG’s? I would say probably not unless the price difference does not affect your budget that much. But if you are comfortable spending $1,000+ for wireless headphones, the MG's should be a top choice. ... show more

  • High Quality Well Made Headphones. Sound Quality Was Very Good, But Not Blow-me-away Good.
Very well made high quality product with great craftsmanship. Sound was very good, especially when using high resolution music source and the DAC mode with cable, but it did not blow me away, which I was kind of hoping for given this is probably one of the best wireless audiophile headsets on the market. I suppose it is the inherent limit of a wireless set with closed back design. It will never match high end open back headphones or floor speakers. Maybe I was wrong expecting near perfection in sound quality. I like these headphones and will keep them and use them a lot. But I am not sure they are worth the $1500 price tag, especially considering you can get the Focal Bathys for about one third the price. Other aspects of the headphones are very good as expected. Noise cancellation was very good. Ear cups very comfortable even after wearing them for 2-3 hours. App and bluetooth setup was fairly easy. Other than sound quality mentioned above, everything about these headphones matched my high expectations for such a high end product. ... show more

  • Nice Stuff
Very nice product with a nice price, behaves very good at noise cancellation and the sound quality, but could be a bit heavy for long time wearing.

  • Woth the money over the original Bathys
I have had the original Focal Bathys for about 3 years now, and loved them, but was always a little disappointed with the noise cancelling. OMG are these better! The NC is every bit as good as my Bose QCs and my old Sony XM4s, but the audio is at another level. The accuracy, soundstage and bass are all on par or better than a pair of Sony MDR 7506, which are professional quality wired headphones. I read some reviews that said the MGs were only slightly better than the OG, but this is not correct at all. Noticeable difference in the sound profile, and the NC is MUCH better. I definitely got my money's worth with the OG, but these are a marked improvement. Definitely recommend. ... show more

  • Think twice.....I probably got a bad set.
Not sure how to rate these. I'm fairly certain I was delivered a product that had already been opened. Ok fine - no cosmetic issues. Sound was excellent. $1200 excellent? Probably not, but that isn't why I'm rating 2-3 stars. I had three major problems with mine. First, the noise cancellation would spontaneously change levels without cue. And no, I was not hitting the pass-thru button on the left side, nor the mistakenly changing it in the app. Second, if you bounce around an inch or two while wearing these, the volume/sound changes with each bump even those they don't move on your head (great fit, by the way. They do not feel heavy whatsoever). It's so bad that at times the sound became so muffled I couldn't even discern the beat of the song playing. If I'm in a tractor or bumpy road, this means the sound is horrible and after awhile almost is enough to cause a headache. And no, I'm not prone to headaches. Third, the app is horrible. A simple change will many times cause the app to crash/freeze. Listen, these are very nice headphone if you are sitting still and want very nice sound quality. But for 1200? Nope, everything needs to be perfect. With any bouncing motion, these sound worse than my old Q35s. ... show more
