Description

Fluval Stratum is the ideal aquarium substrate for stimulating the growth of aquatic plants in freshwater aquariums. Plant roots easily penetrate and spread throughout the substrate, allowing live aquarium plants to obtain a variety of key, readily available nutrients that will make them flourish. The addition of Fluval Plant Micronutrients will ensure a full complement of essential macro and micro. The substrate's light, non-compacting, porous structure is also highly beneficial to nitrifying bacteria, which rapidly colonize the vast porous surface, providing optimal aquarium water quality for real plants. Fluval Stratum's inherent properties will help support a neutral to slightly acidic pH, ideal for most plant species and species of tropical fish or shrimp normally kept in planted aquariums. Fluval Stratum also provides new aquarium shrimp with the ideal refuge, allowing them to escape predation until they are large enough to emerge into the shrimp tank. This highly attractive substrate will not discolor water and helps control organic discoloration usually present when natural driftwood aquarium décor is used. • Great for plants and self watering planters
Color: Stratum Size: 17.6 lbs Style: Substrate
The media could not be loaded. I use this with a base of pon to create self watering planters for most of my plants and they love it! Propagating is so much easier with it, too. Great quality and I always get the bigger bag since it’s better cost per pound. I highly recommend plant parents to try this! It will def leave a mess on your hands and potentially clothes while you use it so be careful! ... show more

What more to say, doesn't cloud the water, works as it should, plants would probably leave a good review, but they are plants and can't type. will buy again.

  • First impression: decent quality substrate. DO NOT AGITATE when rinsing!
Color: Stratum Size: 17.6 lbs Style: Substrate
IMPORTANT INFO for those prospective buyers on the fence about this: I was unsure about what substrate to buy when planning to redo my 20 gallon aquarium. I plan to have an aquascape with plants, shrimp, and small freshwater fish. I wanted a darker substrate as I just like the look / contrast. Some of these reviews made the substrate look quite medium brown & also the numerous reviews about the substrate clouding the water excessively had me concerned. Furthermore, I’d always heard the rule of thumb “1 lb of substrate per gallon of tank” so I was unsure if the 17.x lb bag would be enough. It was plenty for my liking. When I received it, I was pleasantly surprised by how dark it was. It has a nice, earthy sort of smell too. I’m glad I read the back of the bag, which specifies to RINSE but NOT AGITATE the substrate. That is because whatever the chemical composition of this substrate is, it is delicate. You can smash the individual little grains between your fingers, and that disintegrates into a cloudy, turbid mess in water. It holds its form just fine if you simply rinse & deposit it into the tank, but it is helpful if you consciously try to handle it gently. It likely WILL cloud your tank pretty significantly at first, but as long as you don’t use your hands to rinse it & leave your filter running, it should clear up pretty quickly. I just put the substrate in my tank yesterday (6/14/21) and do not have any of my plants yet, so I cannot comment on how plants or stock do in the tank just yet. I will try to update with comments on how planting goes & how the plants develop if I remember! ... show more

  • Works as described
Color: Stratum Size: 17.6 lbs Style: Substrate
Really good material works really well. You need to get a fine colander fill it up with two cups and rinse it out. You don't want to rinse out more than that because you really never get it clean. Beyond that rinsing is the most important thing. Shrimp love it. They have their babies and they hide right into the substrate. Wonderful stuff. It is tough to clean if you're doing gravel vacs. So put a filter in your gravel vac to keep from shucking up baby shrimp and plants. ... show more

  • Great substrate for a planted tank
Color: Stratum Size: 17.6 lbs Style: Substrate
I read the other reviews and found myself questioning this product. I know how much cleaning gravel sucks and I’ve been victim to the cloudy mess that can occur. I went ahead and purchased. Now to rinse or not, what was my plan if it clouded to a muddy mess as some have claimed. I took a shot and went with the most reliable reviews. Here is what I did: I did not rinse it at all, from the bag to the tank. Once I laid it out to 2” depth I planted all my plants and added the drift wood etc. to fill it, one person mention a hand cup method, this works extremely well. I took my time and slowly filled up. Water still looks clear at this point. Now to turn on the pump, is this when my muddy mess will come. With a deep breath I turned the pump on. To my amazement, the water remained perfectly clear. Ok, I thought, let’s see what happens over night. The next morning the water was crystal clear, only then did I realize the day before the water had been slightly cloudy. I came to a point where I needed to move a plant. I was expecting a plume of “dust” when I disturbed the substrate. This did not happen, I was able to gently replant without issue. This substrate is lighter than rocks or sand, however, I’ve had no issues with plants floating. After the success of the first one I then changed out an existing tank removing sand and replacing with this. I emptied all the water saving about a gallon to reuse as mature water. I followed the same method with the same results. I will say this is a much smaller tank when I turned on the pump it go cloudy for about 10 minutes and quickly settled and filtered out. Plants are loving it in both tanks. I did not rinse it either time and never ended up with Mississippi mud, the water in the first tank is the cleanest I’ve ever seen a new tank run. I’m not sure what the other reviewers are doing but if you take your time and go slow you should have no problems. ... show more

  • My plants in several tanks are now THRIVING!
Color: Stratum Size: 17.6 lbs Style: Substrate
I had heard so much about this type of stratum in several online planted aquarium groups that I had to try it. I am so glad that I did. I have several small tanks (2-6 gallons). Still being fairly new to the fish keeping hobby, I tried several different methods first: * just gravel * just sand * sand with grow tabs * garden soil capped with sand As any seasoned aquarist (is that what we are called?) will tell you, my plants in the first two options did not fare so well. Slight improvement with the grow tabs. Ok, with the garden soil and sand (just needed deeper substrate layer). HOWEVER, in the Fluval Stratum, they are finally thriving! Now, I have heard that this doesn't last forever, but I am perfectly happy to refresh it if needed down the road. I have also added some of the stratum to regular soil in a couple of terrariums I built. The plants are doing very well in these settings as well. AND, if you don't already know: Plant parents LOVE to use this stratum to propagate cuttings! ... show more
