Just like the bug zapper grandma used to have! This thing works! We were being sucked dry by mosquitoes at the end of the summer and it was just intolerable to be outside. I got this a few days later got it hung out on my back porch and proceeded to massacre about two mosquitoes per second for the next three weeks. You could see a gray carpet of dead mosquito carcasses under this thing every morning. It was a glorious sight! It took out plenty of nasty cut worm moths as well. Highly effective almost frighteningly so. When I stood outside and watched it, it sounded like machine gun fire as the mosquitoes were flying into the bars. Seems to be plenty powerful to roast even the fattest moths. You get what you pay for. It is a little more expensive then the XYZ brands, but I would consider that an investment because you’ll get to use this for more than one year. Truly was a plug-in play system very easy to set up. Simply plug it in and you’re good to go. The outside cage seems plenty sturdy and the slits are small enough and far enough away from the electrical element to make sure you don’t accidentally touch it with your finger. My only minor complaint is that I had to unplug it each day and gently brush the dead moth carcasses off the electrical bars with a small twig by reaching through the safety great. After I got all of that cleaned off and my stick out and away, I plugged it back in for another day of reading my backyard of the insect hordes.

The unit worked perfectly right out of the box. It does attract an array of insects, and I'm ashamed to say, it's satisfying to hear the zap of an unwary insect flying into its grid. I have a garden nearby, and have come to realize that a number of those moths flying around are responsible for the caterpillars chewing on my plants. My guilt for targeting anything but mosquitoes decreased. Before buying this unit, I read reviews, and people seemed to have varying opinions about whether it attracts mosquitoes. Well, I needed to know for sure. I used the included attractant. At first, I just placed a sheet of cardboard beneath it to monitor the catch. I saw a variety of insects the next morning, and some of them were mosquitoes. Not a ton, but some. However, I also noticed a couple of other things. The ants quickly discovered this cache and were making off with the carcasses. Moles/voles (?) started tunneling under/near the unit, perhaps attracted by the commotion of insects congregating. Some of the larger moths attracted by the unit were on the cardboard, stunned but not dead. I may not qualify for sainthood here, but I don't like the idea of critters suffering so I upped the lethality a little. Instead of cardboard, I placed a pan of water below the unit , with a dash of dish soap to decrease the water surface tension. I checked it daily and while my "catches" vary from night to night, there were definitely more mosquitoes in the mix. One night, there must have been a black fly convention in town, because there were at least 300 of them in the pan. The moths are now "swimming with the fishes" in the morning, and if one somehow survives the gauntlet of the unit and the water, I think it's earned its freedom and I let it escape. I could go on, but I am personally happy with the unit. The outside weather doesn't bother it, and if a fried insect sticks to the grid, it is easily brushed off with a small stick. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it doesn't kill everything that hits the grid. I'd like it better if it was "lights out" immediately for anything that hits it...no suffering or delay.

Works great, well-built and took care of our mosquito issue 100%, which was the reason we purchased this. Sadly though, it also attracted the praying mantises that inhabited our garden and zapped four. They are attracted to the blue light. Also noticed spider activity was higher around the light because of the critters drawn to it. Five star due to effectiveness and we will hopefully figure out the praying mantis situation.

If you want an old school bug zapper from the 1980's - this is it! We back up to a creek and have so many zebra mosquitos. The newer/fancier zappers were no match for what we are dealing with. This one cut the population way down! And it is so satisfying to hear the zaps! We don't mind the noise one bit.
