Super cute, challenging, fun kit!
This is a review for the New Zealand Queenstown miniature kit. I have made a couple of small miniature kits like this one but this is the largest one so far. It took about 45 hours off and on over 3 weeks to complete. Very relaxing and so much satisfaction when complete. Each little piece was fun to make and to my surprise look very real. Very ingenious use of tiny tidbits to make cute little household items. I enjoyed making making this so much that I was actually a little sad when it was finished. THINGS I WISH I HAD KNOWN BEFORE VENTURING INTO THESE KITS... VIDEOS: - Find the making of videos on YouTube that show pretty much step by step how to build the kit. Although the instructions are pretty good and better than most kits they sometimes are not 100% clear in some places. The videos help get you thru some of the more challenging pieces. I watched about 3 of them instead of the normal crud on TV before I started the build so I knew what I was getting into prior to starting. It really helped in the long run. I referenced them several times while building as well. GLUE: - I used Beacon 3-in-1 glue for the majority of the build. Apply to the surface to be glued and allow it a few seconds to get tacky before bonding to next piece so it doesn't slide round on you. - I used Grandmother Stoves Stick Flat glue for wallpaper, floor and larger flat surfaces that require addition of paper. You paint it on with a craft paint brush or sponge paint brush. It is water soluble so it cleans up easy even if you forget to do it right away and your brush dries up. TOOLS: - Use really sharp pointed small craft scissors. Curved nail scissors help with circular cuts too. The paper items for the house are teeny tiny and require a lot of fussy cutting. - Get some good needle point straight and curved long handle tweezers. These will come in very handy for the whole build. - You will need a small wire cutter and needle nose pliers. You can get an inexpensive jewelry making kit that has these items (including tweezers). - Get a good Xacto knife or utility knife. ASSEMBLY: - I followed the directions step by step, page by page, however, in hindsight I wish I had gone thru and made all of the pieces that go into the house first then assembled the house and lighting. I found it a little hard to get the pieces into the assembled house with the second floor and roof on but using tweezers I was able to get the pieces in and glued down. There is a YouTube video out there that one person shows how that works. - When making the fabric pieces - use the templates provided to cut the fabric out. I didn't do this on the arm chair and had lots of issues covering the pieces for it with fabric. Also, make sure you are covering the correct side of the pieces with the fabric. I messed up twice on the wings of the arm chair by covering the wrong side of pieces and they only provide just enough of every fabric to use so there is little to no room for error. - Don't be afraid to organize your house differently than the instructions show or not make every piece that goes in the house. Play around with it and make it your own,. You can even paint the house a different color. I veered off course a little with that and love the results. I even replaced the TV picture that was provided with my own family photo. If you have dexterity issues still give it a try. For me this kit really helped with mine buy the time I finished the project. It was a little hard at first as I have numbness in my right hand (middle, ring and pinkie fingers) but it actually helped me use those fingers much better. I was kind of amazed and very pleased at that outcome. I plan to keep doing these kits or design some of my own to help long term too. Just take your time making each piece and know that a good bit of time is spent waiting for glue to dry. I would start one piece then while parts of it were drying I would start the next one so I could keep moving along. I really loved making this kit and as each little piece was completed I would be so thrilled with how cute it was. Well worth the money and time!

Cute.
Love this kit. So fun and cute. I did have to leave the triangular roof off of the front because I couldn't get it to fit right. That is probably a construction error on my part though. I actually like it better like that though because I can see all of the cute things inside better.

Well made but really small plus tips

Update: 1 star doxxed [Almost complete] 1. Missing a piece of the bench. Fortunately I had scraps from previous builds. I made a replacement with a mini hand saw. It's not perfect, but it's not noticible. 2. White LEDs have short wires. Tips: the ground floor ceiling lights wiring are within the grooves on the upper side of the floor upstairs. The connections have to made are going to sit in the grooves, because of are just not long enough to be spliced outside of the area. The shortest wires made the splicing difficult when the rest have to be cut to the same length as the shortest ones so they can be combined and connected to an extension wire to complete the wiring. I made the mistake of putting too much tape around the splice because I wanted them to be secure. As a result, the spliced portion don't fit in the groove. The floor that covers them is just a piece of paper. They stick out and make the floor so bumpy that I don't even know how to finish placing parts for the upstairs. Do not wrap the splice with so much tape that they don't stick out from the floor. I was so frustrated that I did not want to undo it. It is pretty unusual tha spilce after splice is required to finish the wiring; this is the second time I encounter this problem although this is not the worst. I would rather they charge more for LEDs with longer wires. I make these for charity auctions so this is one I have to keep. It's no big deal because it is really pretty overall. ******************* I have been making these miniature kits for months and I have all the tools I would ever need and good glues. The wooden parts are sanded and painted nicely and fit together very well - there is minimal warping of larger pieces. I have built very small ones like those in a small tin can. I usually avoid buying those that are too small, for example a two-story structure that only has a total height of 6 inches. This does not look small to me based on the dimension. However, the furniture and fixtures are very small. It is challenging, but not impossible. I just did not expect small pieces for the total size of the house. One thing I really like is the blue LEDs that are used for the pool.

The little girl's room sold me on the project.

I really enjoyed making this adorable house, it's quite the project. As usual, everything is super tiny, but it turned out good, if not perfect. But perfection is not the name of the game. I made a mistake using the wrong guage wire on one project and almost ran out so be sure not to follow my lead here. I thought I didn't have the mesh fabric but after running to Michaels to buy it, I found it stuck to another piece of fabric. It's very small and almost invisible. I painted the green stairs white and skipped the fabric on the handrails as I thought they were pretty ugly, otherwise I followed the instructions faithfully. (I usually hack my miniature houses using paints and my own papers.) The instructions are pretty terrible so I watched several YouTube videos which helped a lot. Make sure you read the directions carefully, match the materials you need for each little project, and above all, have fun!

Instructions are difficult to follow and were confusing

although this is a beautiful dollhouse, it is difficult to assemble and not for the novice or first time builder. It isn’t as easy to assemble as the videos show on YouTube! The parts don’t fit together as described and require modifications a novice builder wouldn’t know how to do. The materials used are cheap and childish. I made many changes to get a professional finished product. The instruction book is beautiful but less than helpful in locating the correct parts to be used and the sequence to assemble in order to complete the project. Very frustrating and it appears the instructions were not intended for the American market!!!!!!!!

Excellent product. All tiny details need to put together. This project required patience. Very time consuming. I am happy I did it. Looks beautiful with lights on. All wires figuring was difficult for me, that is why I bought battery operated small lights and put them in.

Attractive and just challenging enough

This was my third miniature house kit and the easiest to assemble. It’s a charming house; I love the infinity pool with underwater lights (made myself a pool float) , and the floating staircase. I had thought I was missing a few tiny parts, contacted the company, and they sent me replacements. Turns out that even though I had checked twice, I actually had them, mea culpa. I think the trickiest part was wiring the lights because the filaments are so delicate. Also should note there are some boring parts where you basically are watching glue dry while holding teeny tiny parts together. And I ended up doing a bit of sewing and using masking tape to help hold the fabric in place for the cushions. One major benefit was that the kit included a sheet with URL’s for YouTube videos of assembling all items and structures. This was a huge help; the printed instructions weren’t bad but seeing them on video made everything clear. I frequently paused construction to double check if I was doing it correctly. This is my first kit with a dust cover which is nice to have.
