  • Worth Considering..Does have a lot of potential if Fitbit designers has a little imagination.
So many choices to choose from when it comes to fitness watches. I really researched my choices before purchasing this one. I am glad that I got it. First I will list what I was looking for, then what I like about it and then what some of the short falls are. When I was researching fitness watches I realized that there was not one that was perfect for me. I wanted one that was small, lite, not ugly, good for running, cycling, had a heart rate monitor, GPS, sync with my surface, track calories, lots of functionality, yet quick access to functions, a silent alarm was also a plus, and did not require a smart phone. This does have everything listed above except the cycling (I speak to that later). Out of all the ones I looked at it was the most intuitive to use. One of the best features is the heart rate monitor. I really was not looking forward to having to wear a chest monitor all day just to get my heart rate recorded all day. So far the heart rate monitor has been pretty accurate. I do have another watch that does have a heart rate monitor. They seem to match up pretty good. I also was worried because of my job I find it much easier to wear a watch under my wrist. Doing so does not seem to have affected the accuracy of the watch. As far as running it works really well. You can track your route by using the GPS. This does use the battery up faster, but not as much as other GPS watches I have had. It does turn the GPS on automaticly when you choose the run feature. You can also start running before the GPS connects with the satellites. This so far has not affected my stats and I have not noticed much of a difference with what shows as my run route on the map. Calorie tracking is hard to determine accuracy because no two devices ever agree. However, it is close to most apps and devices that I have. I do like the food and water tracking on the app. It searches for the food items you put in and the stats are almost always the same as what is listed on the package. I also gives you many choices to choose from on how to measure how much you ate of something. Over all the app is easy to use. The watch is easy to use. The touch screen makes it easy to select and swipe through functions. It is also easy to read. It uses dots for each minute on the clock. It will stack the dots to show how much activity you have had for each minute. This stacking is relative to the activity for the hour. The only issue here is that the face is so sensitive that when it rubs up against my sleeve is sometimes changes what the face is showing. However, this does not bother me because this does not activate or change any settings. The silent alarm is awesome. I am very active and do sleep hard sometimes. So far I have always felt it go off and been woken up by it. The only issues is once my arm was tucked under my body while sleeping and this automatically turned off the alarm. This is the only device though that does not use audio tones, but a fast vibration to alert you. This is a great feature for me. The only issue with the alarm is why they didn't make it so that you can set an alarm on the watch. You have to set it on the app and then sync it. This also track hiking (heart rate, distance, route, and so forth), yoga (heart rate and not sure what else since I don't do yoga), workouts (mostly just heart rate and time doing it), and weight lifting which I don't track with a fitness watch. It also is one of the few that does not require a smart phone, though it does have functionality with one such as receiving messages and controlling tunes with it. The Surge does sync quickly using a wireless USB connector with no issues so far. I do have tendencies to get rashes from watch bands. So far I have not had a problem with this. I just put a little baby powder on the rubber of the watch band as I do with all my watches and have no issues. -Later on I did develop a rash, see update below. Fitbit says not to wear this in water. However, so far I have had no issues swimming with it and wearing it in showers. (I forget to take watches off). I believe Fitbit states this because they don't want anyone complaining about a shorter life of the device for doing so, but so far I have not seen any deterioration of the unit by forgetting to take it off. The heart rate monitor does seem to continue to work as I am swimming. I don't see why Fitbit doesn't do some more testing and if they find an issue with water just seal it a little more. Most watches and devices have no issues with swimming and showering. I think this again is Fitbit doing some CYA. However, using the sensors it has it could be programmed for swimming and be pretty accurate. (If Fitbit programmers and designers can't figure this out they can contact me.) With GPS this could really add to the function. It also seems if they were worried about swimming they would make a slim rubber covering to put on it while swimming which would allow the back to still read heart rate. I have played with this idea myself and the designers should have no issues figuring this one out. Now what it falls short on. There is no cycling function. It does have a spinning function which I currently use while biking. It tracks time and heart rate and calculates calories burned which is a generic calculation that isn't too accurate since it does not consider speed and elevation for starters. A biking feature seems to be an easy fix due to the GPS tracking and elevation tracking it can do already. Some say that it is a feature soon coming, but as of yet I have not read anything from fitbit stating this. Another thing that may deter some is that so far it doesn't seem to work with other third party apps. This I really don't care about and have not spent much time considering. My wife whom also wanted a fitness watch really looked into this and said that she couldn't find any that it synced up with. She bought another fitness watch (which she really is upset with [Misfit] hopefully she will write a review on this). Overall I am really happy with this fitness watch. Hopefully the company will consider all the reviews and push some updates that will make it better. I did take a star away for no biking feature and the lack of consideration on how to make this work for swimming (it already has everything it needs, just a little programming and a little thought). I really hope that Fitbit pushed this out without those features with the idea to add them soon because they needed a little capital to get the product started while gauging the interest. -Update- I have ended up returning mine. It didn't fit very well after sometime. I will have to buy a larger one. I have very small wrist and was sure that I needed a small one. However, after wearing it for about a week it has become very uncomfortable. I normally have to buy small watch bands. I have a 6 1/2 inch wrist. After wearing it for a week (I did take it off once a day when showering) I developed a rash where the heart rate monitor touched my skin. I did as the instructions said and still had the problem. I think it was because I was wearing it too tight due to the band's small size, it didn't feel too tight. I do wear watch very snug. Unless your wrist is 6 inches or small I would try the large size. It would be helpful if the size chart on the box was present on Amazon. ... show more

  • Long time fitness monitor user moves on.
I don't do a lot of reviews, but this was a lot of money and I know I relied heavily on the reviews for my decision to purchase. They are pretty mixed, so I will add my two cents. Size: I ordered this through Amazon. First off, I do NOT recommend a small unless you are super petite. I am an "in between" size and I originally ordered the small. I was on the last 2 wrist strap holes. It fell off while sleeping several times (or when removing a long sleeve shirt). Touchscreen: My touchscreen stopped functioning after the first day. I was still able to track everything as well as use the alarm and GPS run options. Customer service: I contacted both fitbit and Amazon about getting a replacement. I received a reply from both within a day or two to get a replacement at no charge to me. I ended up going through fitbit after reading their forums about how the replacements that they were sending (this issue is pretty common) were working well. I am happy to report that my replacement is working well. They also sent me a Large instead! I'm able to fasten it more securely and comfortably. Features: I've had a Bodymedia fit armband for about 3 years now. The Surge's readings are very comparable. Through the years, I have trusted my Bodymedia to give me accurate readings. I've had it so long that the little button wore off/broke off. The GPS tracker was accurate for me. I did a run on a track and it was only .1 miles off of a 1.5 mile run. When you go with the understanding that GPS itself has an accuracy of 3m or less, a variance is normal. I used it in a high altitude area with no trees and it picked up the satellite signals within 2 minutes. The HR monitor is great at reading the resting heart rate. During activities, mine seems to be pretty accurate, but I do not train with a specific heart rate in mind. I go with my effort level as I've always done since I was very young. HR monitors are not great for me as the generic formula isn't accurate for me anyways, I often ran at over 100% with my chest strap monitors. The graphs on the tracker are still handy to see where I work the hardest when I review my workout. The silent alarm is great! My spouse and I get up at different times and he has a Charge. It works great at waking us without disturbing the other. Also, the sleeping tracker is pretty accurate as well. I'm a restless sleeper and often wake up fatigued and this lets me know what went on. It matched my BodyMedia pretty well. Syncing: The text thing is neat, I don't have to take my phone out of my purse or whatever to see if it's important enough to interrupt what I'm doing. I haven't had many issues in regards to syncing with a Galaxy S5. Sometimes it takes 3 times, but it always does by the 3rd (and it's only a moment to try). I don't worry about the size too much. Yeah, it's pretty big on a woman's arm, but I'd only worry about it if I was wearing formal attire. Is it worth the $250? Yes, I think so. Unless you sign up for the premium service, the tracking is free. My Bodymedia required $7 a month for service- that adds up. Also, I purchased the Bodymedia for around $100 and it doesn't have all the features. ... show more
