I was pleasantly surprised by this wedge. I expected average performance, meaning it would pop out or be difficult to tap in for the first sold hit from the maul. Nope. Tap it in. Smack it and it stayed put, drove in well, and split the rounds pretty good with fairly quick split / check lines developing after a few hits. Cross grained wood always gives you issues and this wedge is no exception. That said, it works better than most other wedges I've used even in cross grained wood. Typically cross grained fibers are found in the wood near the stump and always around crotches and branch unions. This wedge did better than most in those areas. Thumbs up for this one! It has a decent edge on it too! Oh, and the helix design does work to widen the split. Finally, always keep the chainsaw handy for the really ugly cross grained pieces. It's the best way to deal with them, even if you have a hydraulic splitter. Remember, splitters split wood. They don't 'cut it'. Chainsaws cut wood. Cross grained wood is best cut. The grain structure does not allow for easy splitting, if at all. ... show more

Works great! Split logs with far fewer swings than my usual wedge. While this wasn’t a scientific review, I didn’t account for strength and accuracy of each swing, but you know when something is easier.

Works awesome! We have some huge logs that our electric splitter just can’t split and this did it, no problem. It does take some work though. I would also say that because it’s very heavy, it didn’t arrive in the best shape but that’s more about how it’s shipped.

Okay it’s still a wedge, you still need to hit it with ideally a sledge hammer. However I’m pretty sure it's the best wedge I have ever used. It penetrates well and spreads as it is driven - wider than a conventional wedge. I have split some really knotty pine pretty easily. Stuff that has taken a least two conventional (Estwing with wings that stick out). This Fiskars wedge does a nicer job using a single wedge. I have used the conical ones that are supposed to split into four pieces, regular flat wedges and the - Estwings I believe this Fiskars beats them all. I’m very satisfied with this wedge. When I get something really nasty I’m definitely reaching for this wedge. ... show more
